This video is really cool. I love how you show that inspiration can be drawn from anything! quite literally. Ideas come from experiencing life!

Another great video John - perhaps in part two the series you will include some suggestions for how to find these inspirations. A great deal of the hunt for treasure is not in the map, rather in the guide that takes you to those points. How can one be an effective self-guide to find these seemingly hidden inspirations? A good start to emotional story-telling and object empathy is to engage in mixed-use sensorial mashups. I often suggest "look for the story, the purpose, the intensity of an object and listen to it." As you so aptly point out through the example of musicians.

Great insights as always, Raffi. I sort of take the search for granted because I have been doing this for a long time. I make these little connections several times a day. Everything is viewed through the lens of a designer. Kind of like how street skateboarders reimagine and repurpose the urban landscape as a means of acrobatic self-expression. I'm going to have to think back to when I was a little bit younger and dig deep around how I made those connections.

One source of inspiration for design (industrial and UI design in particular) is popular culture. Especially Science Fiction. There are some great science fiction concept artists out there like Chris Foss, John Berkey, Robert McCall, Ben Mauro to name a few. When I first started out as a Web Developer I would sometimes take inspiration for User Interfaces for websites from sci-fi themed computer games, films and TV shows. Especially one in the Cyberpunk genre like Ghost in the Shell.
When I studied Design at college however the Design History and Theory classes would ignore popular culture altogether and were more obsessed with teaching us Fine Arts History and Theory which as far as I am concerned is almost completely irrelevant.

Another great video! Many times young designer's staff are often seen as 'powerless', 'meaningless', or 'feel-less'. Do you know if there are any good books I can read about what symbols I can consider to use to achieve a certain feel in the design language?

Emotional Design and Design of Everyday things by Don Norman are good. They aren't exactly what you're asking for, but they're the closest thing. In the meantime, you can check out these videos. Someday I might make a book or a robust video program.
