I've been going to Atlanta now for over 40 years. This was the best race I've ever seen anywhere . Live or tv. I was a Bill Elliott fan, then Mark martin. Now Ryan Blaney . What a great race and incredible finish. But please update the restrooms and concessions. And lights outside of the track. Way to dark getting back to car. Kevin Harvick almost knocked my wife down. Of course she's fine and he didn't see her.
Hey Dale, love the podcasts. I’m from India so I can never catch the races live. This podcast helps me get a great recap of the race and also knowledge of the sport. I’m a new fan from the Netflix show so I’m really getting into it and your podcast is amazing. Thanks big boss
I was working on campers at Atlanta and ran into suarez driving the infield. He allowed me a pic! Told him to put that "Chevy" out FRONT!. He got it done!!
As an Australian who raced in ARCA in 1992 and met Dale Sr. I am enjoying Dale Jr's podcasts. Keep an eye on SVG although he has virtually no oval experience he has been at the top of Australia's most competitive race series for many years,
Dale- this is what sold me joining NASCAR as a fan. You allow us to participate with ya'll. Thank you so much for pioneering podcasting....this is what flipped me from MLB & the NFL. I get to "touch" the inside, and with all this new internet connectivity this is the answer. The interviews you get us, the humor (Joey's glove bit), and the insider perspective....I'm all in. I can't go to every race. I can't talk with the drivers, the crews, the historical greats. BUT! I can be a PART of it through this medium. THANK YOU FOR INCLUDING little ole me 😊
Your Dad was always awesome to watch at Atlanta. Most people set up for 1 & 2 and he would be set up for 3 & 4. It was amazing to watch him take a loose car in 3 & 4 and school the field on how to drive the old Atlanta track.
Agreed! It blows my mind how the drivers and fans are calling for more power and that it wouldn't cost anymore for it but NASCAR is like "Nah, it's not what they want."
I love what Jr is saying about driving into the corner right behind someone. I recently watched a bunch of races from the early-mid 90s and at Charlotte and other tracks you could be right behind someone lap after lap without aero push. I miss that. But ya thrilling race in Atlanta
I’ve watched a ton of those old races recently. The cars weren’t nearly as affected by the air. I’m pretty sure it’s because those cars weren’t sealed to the ground like the newer cars. It just doesn’t seem like we’ll ever see that again.
I think they might do that once the track ages. I can't possibly see them still running plates once the surface is too old to actually have pack racing, it'd be just like the xfinity and truck races there which are just single file all the way
Another great episode! Such great breakdown of race weekend. Not gonna lie, I friggin LOVE that hat, Dale! I had to search the interwebs to find it and purchase it for myself! Plus a few other great throwback hats! Thanks guys can't wait for next week!
Love your take on Atlanta Junior. This was my question for ask Jr. So I appreciate you breaking it down in depth with your honest opinion. Also big fan and ton or respect for Suarez.
I 1000% agree that the broadcasters should react to anything exciting on the track and if the camera team was worth a dang, they'd be showing enough of the field to capture it!
This is awesome - love Suarez - great guy and wonderful win! Love that you have a driver videoed in in your new studio - of course I wish it was me in a little fan segment at the end you should add that random fan chat 😜 ❤ 😎 Martha in Miami ; )
Dale's comments about camera position and zoom is spot on. Last week I responded to FloRacing questionnaire asking for fan input on their streaming of short tracks. They do exactly what Dale talks about, on the start or re-start, the camera zooms in to follow the top two guys down the back straight. 24 cars on a small track and Flo cameras and directors want show 2 cars. I suggested there is little to no need for the main camera to always be mounted on top of the stands at the start/finish line. Obviously you want to have a camera to cover photo finishes. Put race coverage cameras backed up aways, high but not real high on turns 2 and 4. Cover the run to the start off of turn 4 from turn 2 camera then follow the field down the back straight into 3 and back around to the front shoot from the turn 4 camera. You can cover the entire track and the field of cars the whole race and miss almost nothing.I've been a subscriber to Flo for several years and have hoped they would improve their coverage. Unfortunately they have not improved their on track coverage. Watching the High Limit Series and the disconnect between the announcer and what is shown on track, I'm wondering if both are on site at the track. The announcer is talking about a battle for 2nd and 3rd but the camera is showing whats going back in 6th and 7th. It's ridiculous and frustrating. It's like watching the Wide World of Sports try to cover an Indy Car race at Phoenix in 1967.
Looks like Nascar has found an old 💎 with a new shine! If they resurface the other parts of the facility they would be talked about like Darlington,Martinsville, ect!
Man, thought Blaney had that, but cool that even he was happy for Daniel. Met him in 2014 when Max Papis was translating for him. He had won a K&N race the night before and was so excited. Glad that the excitement and happiness never left him. He’s a fun amigo for all. His personality reminds me of Helio Castroneves
I’m thankful for iRacing and for NASCAR taking a shot at it. I’m the fan who travels, went to the Daytona 500 a few weeks back. I already wanted a ticket to Atlanta, now I’m going later this year without a doubt! Texas is my home track *sigh*…I can’t wait for them to do something so I can be excited for it!
I loved in the sunlight how they actually got spaced out, handling mattered and if your car was good you could race up front and pass easily. Like Jr said, in a few years it’ll be like old Daytona which is cool
One thing that a network should do is have a " fan cam" where one camera follows the lead or leaders around the entire track at least 1 or two full laps from a grandstand seat perspective without panning out or away. If something happens during that period, use that camera to find and capture it...there's plenty of time for replays and 10 more angles. At least try it
Back in the day, they showed the guys moving through the field, guys passing each other or battling for position even if it was 23rd and 24th. They lost that
To clarify, it doesn't have to be just the leaders...could /should watch the whole field go by...then follow it around for a couple laps...from the stands with no close ups
4:01 Yes! Racing is a spectacle business like a circus or a county fair or a big craft or farmers market. If the tracks nurture that aspect it may not solve every problem or guarantee full stands but it’s the easiest way to get to 90% or better of the crowd attraction factor.
Man I’ve said it for years. NASCAR needs their own streaming service. Iits not a dying sport, the access is jacked up because it bounces between networks and channels. I miss half the races just because I don’t have the channels. And 2 the camera view sucks on tv. Like this past race. 3 wide through the field but tv only got Busch, blaney, and Suarez. I mean come on! We can do better! And you’re right. Things were incredible on the radio. The announcers covered everything. So much is missed with the networks.
Speaking of Iracing… Iracing brought me to the NETFLIX Doc which brought me here. I’ve heard all the talk of the NETFLIX thing bringing in new fans but I imagine the popularity of Oval on Iracing is bringing a decent share too.
Bucket list items. Daytona, Bristol & I've added Atlanta. I watched NASCAR, just under the old press box at Phoenix. Loved hearing Sr. & Jr. on the scanner. I live in Wichita and just too far for me to travel to Kansas race. 63 now, and one leg, but I'll try to get to Daytona at least.
JR, as a long time fan, back in the day, the guys winning were guys that saved their best stuff for the last few laps. Look at Guys like DW, Martin, etc. They took care of their car/tires and cleaned up at the end. That worked in open wheel, it works in NASCAR
PS His English vocabulary is great! And Double PS Junebug was funny on his "family bathroom" story - y'all have good chemistry over there in the studio too 👀 😂 🎉 M.
I am gonna miss a dirt race. I like the roval. I think we're getting very close to a perfect schedule especially with wilkesboro back. Gotta get the rock, and i think a roatating international course.
Glad Jr mentioned iracing. Drivers want relatively easy with setup as key. Regardless if it provided any passing. Nail it right and win. The hate towards the new Atlanta exists still for the above reason. Can have a demanding track, with handling and speed and risk/reward.
We want to watch the race and listen to the race how Dale Jr explains it That's what we want. I'm done with these close up shots all the time and never being able to see the race they might as well just focus on a car in the parking lot can't tell it's going fast
1:06:35 i was a single parent. I took my girls into a stall in the men’s room. I never let them out of my sight because the world ain’t the same as was when I was a kid. My youngest is 29 now, and I’m still glad I was overprotective.
the "lets risk running out of gas alternate strategy" i can see in the middle of the season, when cars are to far out of reaching playoffs by points but u can hit a lucky win and be in!^^ Also Dale when u have 4 cars, what alot of big indy car teams used to do is pit some, save on some and run like hell on some!^^ One of the 3 will be infront in the end!
the camera coverage angle i would like to see the most would be a 360* capable sky cam like the nfl uses. the blimp shots are cool and all for going to and from commercials but i think a steel cable ran the length of the infield area like a power line could provide soooooo many intriguing angles and can follow the action from anywhere on the track without losing any zoom in and out capabilities. ive been wanting to see new angles and ways to target specific spots in the fields without having all the limitations on camera angles and positions. Thoughts???
🐴 the Atlanta race was fun. Mom and I really enjoyed it. The finish was awesome. Being a girl dad was fun for my first ex-husband. Enjoy your girls, they grow up so quick.
52:07 I like to have MRN/PRN radio playing while I watch a race on TV. Radio doesn't have as much delay as TV. Quite often radio will have mentioned every car number involved in an incident while it's still green flag on TV.
@kevincook8632, Go look at the 4/17/2011 race at Tallageda where Jimmie Johnson won in a 4 wide finish. This was in the tandem drafting days too. Look how close the top 8 finished from one another…
@12:00 min. So I raced sports cars off and on. But primarily stock and winged sprint. One tactic I always used in sports cars was “PLUG A GUYS DIFFUSER”. A diffuser only produces downforce if it’s moving air. This was the one issue I brought up before the roll out. How do you expect to bump draft and pack race with diffusers? Your gonna block the air flow and cut off 50-70% of the downforce. This isn’t a HS 20/20 thing. This was foreseen Indefinitely. So I don’t understand why people are complaining knowing this would be the outcome. It’s insanity.
It will be the biggest fumble of all time if NBC doesn't bring Dale back. He's literally still the face of NASCAR. Not to mention that Dale is actually good!!
Does anyone know where Junior gets the hats that hear wears on his show? I want to buy a couple of hats that he's worn - a Texas World Speedway and IROC hat.
Been going to Atlanta since I was a kid. Since it’s only 30 minutes from home. The best thing they did was changing the surface. The old track was going boring. If you were leading at half way you were most likely going to win. Now we are having more lead changes than the other 2 big tracks.
I never was a fan of u 24 was my guy but all respect you great Announcer, and your show is beautiful. I really love and the whole Show being on TH-cam much respect, I missed the guy that used to be on your shoulder all the time your partner. I want to say his name is Mike but I forget I had a brain freeze. But you're the best and go get that other guy back.
DJ has a point, run all out, never surrender. Clint Bowyer probably had car damage and said on the radio about going slow to save his "equipment" (car) to make it to the end of the race.
Red Clay and Blue Granite are in Henry County, not sure about the sand… Source: Im in mass grading and have done a few warehouses just down the road from AMS in the last few years. PS. Xfinity needs the 2010-2016 Aero Package. PSS. We want our own Big Hoss at AMS already!
IMO….. HANDS DOWN BEST RACE IN LAST 20 YEARS! Even my driver ( 48 Ally) out wounded duck 2 laps in, I was still HOOKED the race because I understood the aero screwing with the driver! I want to see the driver pissed and wore out if he didn’t finish well! But LOVED the drivers love rush of how much FUN THEY HAD! I can’t remember ever seeing that many drivers say they had fun after a race and not win! 💯
Best in 20 years? Seriously? The finish was cool but the race really wasnt all that special. In my opinion, both 2022 and 2023 Atlanta races were better.
@@tnwhiskey68 Again in my opinion…. To me the whole field was slide jobbing the cars the whole time. I truly felt that any driver at any time could wreck. That to me is exciting.
I wish they would run heat races like the local tracks. The top finishers in each heat run in the big race at the end. Wouldn't be any sandbagging then.
I haven't heard anyone ask this question about Joey's gloves. Would the webbing keep your thumb out of the steering wheel? In the 500 we saw how much the wheels would turn in an accident and if you weren't careful, could break your wrist or thumb. Could that webbing be used to make it more difficult to wrap your thumb around the wheel? We all know why he used the webbing, but could it help in other ways?
💯 agree about the camera work. Wider views and quit jumping around the different views so much. Just show the racing action. Not four or five in car cans in a row for two laps
i think the biggest issue with all the broadcast companies when it comes to motorsports is that they're still stuck in the 1990's where everyone had a 360p/480p tv and still try to frame everything in that.. i'd say well over 70% of people have a tv over 40 inches with at least 1080p. there's no reason to zoom in on the front guys when you can show 1/3 of the field on the screen and still see everything happening in perfect detail.
the problem with this car is the rake angle you need to run to create the downforce at the rear with the diffuser. The front sits higher than the rear so when it loses the air off the nose it just pushes like a dump truck.remove rear diffuser so the car needs to run more like the old one nose sealed to the track and the rear up in the air more to lean on the rear spoiler. just my two cents on what i would like to see tested.
to Jr's point on saving fuel or not: Larry Mac said it best (a bunch of times), if you keep followin the leader, youll stay behind the leader; you gotta do something different in order to be up front.
I wish Jr got to race at new Atlanta, he def woulda got a few more wins and I think he coulda won a championship with another drafting style race. I love the new track, I usually hate the 1.5 mile tracks where the leader is like 5 seconds ahead and there’s like no action unless a caution comes out. Sure it’s chaotic but it’s fun to watch
At Chicago I was watching the scoring and seeing Van Gisbergen move up position every lap and they did not show how he was doing it until he made it to the top. Yet is was obvious of how he was moving up each lap, something was happening. THat was the most furstrated I have been watching on TV.
The only way to eliminate fuel saving completely is to change the length of the races to only last as long as a tank of fuel will take you, or give them a tanker they can tow behind them that will last the current distance. Moto GP does the former and often puts on a hell of a show. Though F1 does it too, so a good show isn't guaranteed
Tanker? Yeah right. But you could have one of those refueling planes flying around and each car could have a telescoping refueling rig that each driver can control with their free hand.
Family restroom's are definitely a thing Jr. I was in a similar situation where I had my two girls (similar ages too) in a rest stop in Ohio. Unfortunately the family restroom was closed. I had to do the same and take them in the men's restroom, wasn't busy so it wasn't too bad, just not ideal.
They need to bring back the full horsepower back. That will change everything about this race. The handling, the pushing cars into the corner and the fuel milage aspect. This is racing. Not who has the fastest restricted horsepower vehicle. Thats what IROC was.
Saving fuel or running hard, an idea. More points should be rewarded for the most laps led, and maybe even reward points for the driver who led the second most laps, or even the third, it would give more of a reason to run hard, it's about points earned after all. It's why they introduced stage racing, it upped the excitement, same philosophy.
The camera angles have been abysmal for years. There's a YT video comparing the shots from the 2000's to the current model, and the lack of coverage today is shocking.
I've been going to Atlanta now for over 40 years. This was the best race I've ever seen anywhere . Live or tv. I was a Bill Elliott fan, then Mark martin. Now Ryan Blaney . Great interview with Daniel, very honest and down to earth guy.
Im so glad that this is now in talk show form

Yeah best racetrack of the year for high speed slidin but at Bristol it was hard to beat him also. Ask Terry lol
@alfee9411 My favorite Bristol driver was Cale in the Holly Farms car for Junior. I grew up going to Bristol in the 70's and Early 80's.
I love to hear Danny say he wants to be a championship contender, and has realistic goals about how to get there.
Let’s get 900hp cars and then go from there. Priority number one…more power!

Where? I am curious
@kevincook8632,
Go look at the 4/17/2011 race at Tallageda where Jimmie Johnson won in a 4 wide finish.
Usually when the drivers complain the racing is phenomenal need to see if we can't get them to complain a little bit more
race of the decade for sure
Ok dale!!! 5 hr energy 😊
I’ve got buddies at UGA that didn’t even know the race was this weekend. Marcus has a lot of room to improve in terms of marketing.
Daniel seems like a cool dude. Glad he got a 2nd win.
Fast Fast track🏁
I wish they could put time stamps on these videos
💯 agree about the camera work. Wider views and quit jumping around the different views so much. Just show the racing action. Not four or five in car cans in a row for two laps
SVG finishes third in XFinity in his second start and no mention?
i think the biggest issue with all the broadcast companies when it comes to motorsports is that they're still stuck in the 1990's where everyone had a 360p/480p tv and still try to frame everything in that.. i'd say well over 70% of people have a tv over 40 inches with at least 1080p. there's no reason to zoom in on the front guys when you can show 1/3 of the field on the screen and still see everything happening in perfect detail.
I think the opposite. They stick the leaderboards and other stuff on the screen so small that I can barely read it and I have a 50" tv.
the problem with this car is the rake angle you need to run to create the downforce at the rear with the diffuser. The front sits higher than the rear so when it loses the air off the nose it just pushes like a dump truck.remove rear diffuser so the car needs to run more like the old one nose sealed to the track and the rear up in the air more to lean on the rear spoiler. just my two cents on what i would like to see tested.
So if the glove is illegal, could the drive hold up a fly swatter to cover the opening? Aking for a friend.
to Jr's point on saving fuel or not:
Larry Mac said it best (a bunch of times), if you keep followin the leader, youll stay behind the leader; you gotta do something different in order to be up front.
Just watch bubba try to drive behind blaney on the last lap. It was mega plow. But yeah, awesome race. Let’s not be satisfied though.
It's unbelievable the energy Mike took away from this podcast
The only way to eliminate fuel saving completely is to change the length of the races to only last as long as a tank of fuel will take you, or give them a tanker they can tow behind them that will last the current distance. Moto GP does the former and often puts on a hell of a show. Though F1 does it too, so a good show isn't guaranteed
Tanker? Yeah right.
But you could have one of those refueling planes flying around and each car could have a telescoping refueling rig that each driver can control with their free hand.
@@chadchadchadchadchad I like it! As soon as they put me in charge, it's the first change I make. 😁😁😁
Jr for NASCAR president please ..... and NOW !!
What’s the difference in saving fuel or saving tires? Just another tool to get to the finish line first.
I say fuel mileage racing is more than okay for the Rolex 24H of Daytona, etc. Stock cars are better suited to tire and handling focused racing. 🍻
The camera angles have been abysmal for years. There's a YT video comparing the shots from the 2000's to the current model, and the lack of coverage today is shocking.
If they can zoom in on an accident in replay, that says they have the picture. This kind of points a finger to the guy controlling the feed.
Loved the show. Just a tip, quit touching the microphones! The constant thumping is very annoying. I'm going to need to turn down my sub woofer.
