Great information!!! Funny story that I read many years ago, a Grandmother made both of her granddaughters a giant jar full of seeds from all different things that she had grown over the years and told them that the jars were their inheritance. The sisters went on with life and actually didn't stay in close contact. One day the sisters got together years later and one was going through a divorce and was really down on her luck. She just didn't know what she was going to do financially. Her sister noticed that she still had her jar of seeds and couldn't believe it because she herself had opened her jar many years ago. She told her sister to open her jar. Her sister said those seeds aren't going to help me, they are just a nice memory of Grandmother. But her sister insisted that she open the jar. When she did, she discovered a envelope stashed in the center of the seeds that she had never noticed. Inside were stock certificates to a little company known as Microsoft that were in her name. She was sitting on millions of dollars and didn't even know it. That's what the inheritance was, not the seeds. 😊❤

I find carrots and parsnips do not last past a season. They loose their viability really fast.

Thanks for the video. I had no problem with saving my corn and okra but I didn’t do so good on the squash and cucumbers.

Hey Jill I live in north east Arkansas and I am thinking about next spring trying Arkansas travler tomatoes and was wondering if you know if they do well in my region ? Thank you for your videos ❤

I tried them one year and they did okay. They didn't impress me as much as I expected, given their hype in Arkansas, but I've learned not to judge tomatoes by one season. I'd recommend trying them out!

Hi Jill I’m confused. I went and listened to your podcast about this topic and you mention that peppers need a lot of distance as they’re insect pollinated, but here in the video (3:40) you say peppers are self pollinating and easy to save seed from (like tomatoes). So that’s a contradiction.. can you please clarify for us? Thank you 🙏

    • @thebeginnersgarden

They are both self- and insect-pollinated. So it basically depends on whether an insect gets to them first, before they self-pollinate. That's why it's recommended that there be a distance between peppers of the same species. Seed Savers Exchange has a good article on this. They recommend 300-1600 feet apart. www.seedsavers.org/grow-pepper

Can seeds be stored in canning jars, air sucked out and placed in a mini fridge? Someone mentioned that the seeds need some air, so if that’s the case, canning jars with the air removed would not work.

I have a question for you about beans and peas… So obviously when you’re growing beans and peas in your garden, if you pick them early, they will keep producing… Which is obviously what you want… But the main goal of the plant is to seed…
so my question to you is, if you are growing for the sole purpose of saving seeds and selling the seeds… Would you want to keep picking the beans and the peas as the plant produces them? Or do you just want the entire plant to grow and then dry out and then harvest all the dried pods? Because it’s kind of hard to get a dried pod from the start because the plant would be dying… I’m just not sure if you should pick the beans and the peas early throughout the season so it produces more and then the second round basically just let the Plant grow a bunch of pods and then let the plant die and then harvest those pods when they are dry

The last option you mentioned is what I do with green beans and peas, because I do want them fresh. For dried beans (like black and pinto), I just let them dry from the beginning. It's a timing thing with your growing season, when to stop picking fresh so they'll have enough time to dry on the vine before winter.
