    This is fantastic, Claudia. I'm a 53 year-old beginner, and for me ballet has been all about these kind of 'slow' details.

    I tell my students that there is about 50 things going on at one time in ballet to remember and this is a great start to just standing before a combination. Wonderfully done! Love all your videos. It helps me to know that I’m doing it right still as a teacher! 😉

    Dear Claudia, thank you so much for this amazing tutorial. Talk about brilliant basics that most teachers skim over!!! I think this might be my favourite tutorial so far 😀.

  • @esstown
    @esstown 5 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    I believe when she speaks of the VMO (Vastus Medialis Obliquus) she is pointing to and referencing the Sartorius muscle, which is in fact an external rotator of the thigh, important in turnout, and yes, must be activated in the area shown in engaging turnout. The VMO is actually part of the quadriceps complex, and attaches to the knee cap (inside edge of top) along with the rest of the quadriceps tendon complex, and is mainly an extensor of the thigh as well as a knee cap stabilizer.

    • @davidawilliams8603
      @davidawilliams8603 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Esstown, you are EXACTLY right. Sartorius muscle FLEXES the knees, weakly abducts, rotates and flexes the hip (sitting cross legged) while Vastus Medialis flexes the hip and extends the knee.

    • @xy2565
      @xy2565 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was just about to comment this!!
      As soon as she was pointing to where the vmo 'is' on the dancer's leg I was thinking that it was far too posteromedial for vmo. Then as soon as she said you want the vmo to turn on and not the quad, I lost it.... The vmo is part of the quads 😂😂😂

    • @silverkitty2503
      @silverkitty2503 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is no one muscle that moves your leg your teacher has to find where you are in balance and where you aren't ..its so hard its why you need an expert teacher which she obv is

    • @muurrarium9460
      @muurrarium9460 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, not a dancer but I know my anatomy and I had NO idea what she was talking about because the location she points at does not match. My petpeeve with a lot of dancers vids: either they get the names completely wrong (look it up galls! its not that hard), or use the correct name for a completely different muscle(group).

    • @leilazerrouki7040
      @leilazerrouki7040 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think she was trying to simplify and what she shows is what people commonly think is the quad, most people don't who specifically is part of the group or not, that muscle behind in the inside of the leg most people would assume it is a muscle of the inside of the leg (which in many people leg is not the quad, because the quad is the front for many people). For me it is simplified, I would do the same. I agree that too many people are ignorant, including some professionals, but at the same time there's also a lot of people who can't deal with that amount of informations, they just want to practice dance while having a life outside of it, they can't spent hours on their anatomy. For them that video would be very nice, simplified anatomy, a cue to help the brain. I find that thread of comments slightly hard and condescending "We know anatomy us how did she dare make a mistaaaake".

    Hi Claudia, I just started ballet as a 24-year-old last week. This video is so helpful. Every tip was just wonderful. I really appreciate it. I paused the video and tried the first VMO exercise straight away. I had knee surgery last year so building up this muscle is really imperative for me. I hope to see a few more introductory videos on your channel in the coming months. I want to begin with a good, solid, foundation as a beginner rather than trying to correct mistakes in a year or two. The basics are fundamental! Small tweaks but makes all the difference.

I dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer but I simply don't have the level (I'm 13 and on pointe for only a year )😢 because I never had the chance of going into a real ballet school :I'm just at a small ballet class at a place where you can do many other sports even if I love my teacher and the way she teaches us sometime I get very discouraged by thinking about my dream
    anyway I still love watching your videos and learning or improving stuff thanks to you 😙

    I don’t quite understand how you lift the hips. Is it a tilt? And making the chest diagonal; is that from the back muscles?
