- In this video i go over how to catch your Mavic Pro in five different ways. I test each way and help you get to the bottom of the question... What is the BEST way to hand catch your Dji Mavic pro.

haha, thanks bro! I've been hand catching with auto land since I had my drone, always sketches me out haha! when it doesn't turn off I'm afraid to re-release just incase it cuts off at that moment too. When it doesn't shut off I've always had to tip upside down, and even then it fights it super crazy as you can imagine and makes onlookers weary haha. But now so simple, I can grab, and hold down! simple. cheers mate.

I tried to really show all the different ways people talk about hand catching the Mavic Pro.
My favorite way is #3 or #1. i have done #5 Auto many times and it always acts differently so i don't suggest bothering with it. #2 is also a way i suggest staying away from.

I found after some updates, there is now one more option, the emergence shut down
Got a new method for you. Well, I say method, it's Method #1 with a different technique. Bring the drone down to catch level, Have the camera look past your right ear (or swapped for southpaw), Reach up and rest the lower frame behind the Gimbal between your thumb and index finger, and firmly grasp it.
I use this method (When I don't revert to classic #1), and when done with proper technique, you can land it the first time, no struggle, no messing around with options. The trick is to know where the sensors are, and avoid them with your catch.
Sean Ozz Is it possible to map the bottom sensors to a soft key? What do you have the soft keys mapped to usually?

Just grab it by the bottom and keep it above your face.
Great advice. Those rotors are sharp enough to cut your finger off (I actually know this from experience--it cut through my thumb like a knife through butter). So great advice all around! We need more solid advice like this!

it's a very good way to fly in areas you could not but you for sure gotta be careful.
So why not wear heavy gloves for the landing? Must be some good reason. Or not.
Extremely dangerous. Imagine those blades hit your face... I'd avoid any of this at all costs. I'd land in the grass before I catch it. Turn the motors off in air and let it drop into the grass. It's very very dangerous.

@@matthewjeschke please NEVER EVER drive a car. It's much more dangerous than this so if you cant do this safely I am worried for you in day to day life. Maybe a bubble suit might help you survive ??
Thanks Sean, Option 3 is by way the easiest, Turn off Landing Protection (just make sure you catch it). It's so cool and protects the gimbal, landing sensors, downward cameras, rotors, air intake - everything. Thanks for inspiring me and my drone (The Puffilin) loves you for it too.

Awesome, I'm doing the 4th hand catch sensors on with no issues. One tip I do have is always have the sun to your back.

The other day I hiked way up to a ridge that I wanted to fly from. It was a killer place to fly, but there was just no piece of granite or small , flat ground to take off from. I can usually find some little place to take off and land. I ended up not flying there because I was afraid of losing it in the backcountry . I wasn’t sure if it would remember home point. I have really never needed to hand launch/catch before. Searched and found your vids. You’re super funny dude ... easy to watch your vids. Just wanted to see it done , before trying it myself. Looks easy ... I’ll be doing it all the time now. I subbed because of your hilarious narration along with the information. It’s funny how a lot of people make tutorials trying to sound like some serious professor. Your vid style is great, keep it up. So many people making comments about eye safety. Not trying to sound like your mom or anything, but as someone who lost one eye to a framing gun years ago ... might not be a bad idea to wear some good shades. Have a great one.

Sean I’m fairly new to the Mavic Pro and just tried your No.3 option as we will need to retrieve the drone on a vessel.

Thanks mate! I tried to hand catch my Mavic yesterday, after recording footage of the beautiful woods here in austria, but realized that it was fighting me. So I let it go and landed the usual way. My assumtion would have been to use sport mode nest time so thanks a lot for pointing out that this does not work. I'll stick with method 1. cheers, Mike

You should test the suicide technique for landing in long grass.
Go into DJI Go 4 settings.
Ensure emergency rotor cutoff is turned on, which allows you to turn off the rotors mid flight by moving both stick to the bottom opposite corners.
Lower drone to 3-5 feet above LONG grass.
Engage emergency cutout.
Drone falls into grass cushion.
I did that in snow instead on my most recent video. Lol

Great tutorial. I hand catch quite often and the one thing I would add is to always take off and catch above head height not level with your face for safety.

I've tried #1 many times and it works well. I just don't like the fight the motor does. Gonna try # 3 from now on.
# 4 and 5 look like good ways to slice your fingers b/c you gotta have pretty good eye-hand coordination to catch it as it lowers (especially if it's windy)

Great video! Wish I had watched this before I tried landing mine on the back of our boat this weekend.
I have been flying RC planes for 20+ years where we avoid putting our hands near spinning props at all costs. So I have always been against hand catching. With sensors turned off, I was trying to land on my landing pad that was on the back deck of our ski boat. with the drone about a foot from the pad it seemed to hesitate coming down the rest of the way for a few seconds. Those few seconds were long enough for it to drift off center of the pad due to wind or boat drift. When it finally came down, only two feet landed on the deck and the drone tumbled into the water and sank 25 feet to the bottom of the lake. Those few seconds would have been enough to safely hand catch and land.
Lesson learned. And it was an expensive one. Hand catching can be safe - especially if you practice the skill and get good at it on land before trying it over water.
I paid $180 to have a diver retrieve the drone but unfortunately at least one of the PC boards is fried and will need to be replaced.

i tried landing on a boat in the ocean many years ago when the 1st mavic was released and almost lost it into the pacific. so hand landing became a thing and it really is just too easy not to do it.
i have a few videos on it and doing it safely with the mini 2 and zoom, and other drones.
a good thing to have up your sleeve.
Perfect - thanks. Was out on the boat and it took what seemed like ten minutes to land on a ridiculous platform I made. And then it missed and I tried to catch it - not a good feeling in my thumb! Tried this out and it is great. Keep it up!
Mark Jordan that is almost the same reason I learned to catch and take off from hand. #3 is what I use on a boat now and pretty much most of the time.
Just be safe about it and your fingers will be ok. Lol
Great vid Sean, thanks for taking the time to investigate all those. I hand catch a lot too as I am often out in the mountains and other areas with no options. I clipped my fingers once already, but am seeing some good ideas and tips in your video and in the comments. Gotta give it more of a chance. I have been looking at floaters for when I am out on the water too, as I am often stand up paddling and not on a boat, so it's either hand catch or land on the board - ahhh, hmmm, not really!

I have seen some people using those large foam balls in water but I'm not sure if they get in your image.

Really nice! I am considering upgrading my Spark to the Mavic 2 Zoom, but one of my main questions is hand landing/take-off. I run a mountaineering and rock climbing vlog and bring my drone with me to the mountains, so it is essential that I can launch it from the hand :) Thank you for showing that that is indeed possible :)

With the Spark you could grab, quickly turn it around on its head, and then the motors would shut off...have you tried that with the Mavic?

Matanya Tausig oh trust me. I’ve done the auto land many many times. This was just what happened the day I filmed this.
The auto land has always been sketchy and for me not even close to the safest or easiest way to hand catch.

I painted my extended landing gear neon orange for visibility reasons. I only use them to help me see it in dim conditions. I pretty much hand catch and launch all the time.
on the trip i am currently on i have been hand catching about 95% of the time due to the terrain.

James Chung this is the way I do it now 99% of the time over the last 6+ months. Works great.
I turned off downward facing sensors and perfect hand catch every time, you have full control and its easy. I think frequent users of the mavic dont really need the downward sensors. Oh, and I sometimes use the leg extenders, if the area is dusty ish etc. I hand launch a lot but its wise to have multiple options to launching and landing.

Turning off all obstacle avoidance is the only reasonable method and there is still a lot of risk involved. Any sudden gust of wind could push it into your body or worse, your face (eye). And you never know when a wind gust is coming. It's not worth slicing yourself open or worse. For me, just land it as it is designed. Really nice video editing and background music by the way. A year and a half later I’m working on a couple update videos but with the Mavic Air this time.
The first way works best for me , I don’t see the need to risk my fingers twice for one landing.
I haven’t tried to take off out my hand yet. But landing in the hand is pretty easy for me.
Nameless Bum I used to use number one exclusively. Now I use number three. That one sensor is not something I ever use so I leave it off. Makes flying that much easier.

All I have to disable for method 3 is landing protection? Or do I also have to tweak with other sensors / settings as well? And all you do to shut off is pull down the throttle constantly?
Alejo Acosta yes. That is correct. Just the one sensor off and it will not fight you.
Just be aware when landing normally it will not stop for a second before landing any more. It will continue to the ground so don’t come down too fast.

I was at the top of the mountain and really need to launch it,but so much tall grass like what u said,thanx for sharing i was thingking to do this before but I’m just afraid I will broke my motor,,and the most amazing part when My drone almost hit by a helicopter,I was so fucking nervous and I was at the cliff that time like really dangerous cliff,but luckily everything fine,be responsible drone owner guys,keep it up cheers!
Thank you very much for the tips. In my opinion the best option is deactivate the bottom sensors. It seems the easiest and safest way, but I will make sure that the sensors will be active on the next flight. Regards!

This is how you do it with the Spark, ease it down to within reach, come up behind it and swiftly grab it. As soon as you have it gripped, and before it starts to fight TWIST it sharply inwards and downwards at least 90 degrees in whichever direction feels right, which will depend upon which hand you use. I set my new Mavic Pro up yesterday and before it was properly connected to my tablet I had it take off in my house. Not good, I instinctively treated it just like an overgrown Spark and it worked, but I could tell it had a bit more power! It seems if it is tilted over more than 90 degrees the drone thinks it has crashed and a memo from DJI's legal department cuts out the motors faster than you can say compensatory damages.
nice video, the only thing i will recommend is wearing some protective goggles/glasses, you don't want to get hit but does propellers if something goes wrong.

Way#6 if I may... I always catch it with the camera facing me (but higher than my head so as to not trigger forward sensors), all sensors on, and the natural gripping position of the hand prevents anything from tripping the downward sensors (if done correctly). No fighting, all sensors on.
i also grab above the head most the time. i have not had it not fight yet and i land it facing all kind of ways.
however i have recently been flying with landing protection off.
it is so easy in that mode. lus over water you are suppose to have it off anyway,

If you catch the mavic pro at the front end so you don't cover the ultrasonics, it doesn't try to get away .keep the videos coming cheers Anton

I did number 1 for around a dozen of times, and last time I did it I noticed the back arms BENDING UP as the drone was fighting hard to get away. Now the small protection plate by the rotating ball joint of the back arms are always slightly bend up. So I strongly recommend AGAINST letting the drone fighting you. Number 3 and 4 are the best options.

Thanks for the methodical testing and best options- I will be using #3 with a Mini3 Pro. Before shutting the drone off, I'll just make a new habit of turning Landing Protection back on. I've seen some grab and flip just upside down, but am not comfortable with that-
I’d highly recommend not doing that with a 3 axis gimbal. Made a video explaining why but to sum it up. It can damage your gimbal.
@@SeanOzz You're talking about the 'flip' method, correct? I can see how it would damage the gimbal- it has to be really sensitive.

Hi! Thanks a lot for the video! However I do have one questions. With the bottom sensor off, how does the drone know that you want to cut off the motor and not just reduce the altitude the drone? Because in the 2 situation, left stick is down..
The sensor doesn’t tell it to shut the motors off. When it makes contact with the ground or your hand and continue to pull down the stick it then shuts off. Hope that helps.
The bottom sensor really only helps In a return to home situation.
Mavic pro was the first drone I ever bought. I’ve bought a few since then, even a dual enterprise. The pro is still the best drone I’ve got.
