- I just wanna give Dona a piece of our mind! She doesn't deserve Barthello... BUT I'm really hoping this is just part of her character arc. On a more positive note - we won our first summons battle and had our first Shoopuf experience!!! This game just keeps getting better and better. Hi Kasta,
Bit of advice on the sphere grid...
You're playing the international version which means you have a more unlocked version of the sphere grid (called the 'Expert Sphere Grid') than you would in the standard version.
This can be useful, but it also means you can accidentally screw yourself over by not following the characters "default" paths enough. In the standard sphere grid, those paths would be forced on you by having side routes blocked off by lvl 3 and 4 locks.
You may need to make sure you are sending at least a couple of characters along paths that add enough strength nodes. If you don't do this, their basic attacks will not grow and later bosses will become very very hard, and you may end up having to grind a lot of random battles to recover your characters positions on the grid.
Auron is your default big hitter, and that path goes from Power Break, to Magic Break, to Armour Break, to Mental Break.
Wakkas also gets strong later on, and that path is Dark Attack, to Silence Attack, to Sleep Attack, to Dark Buster, to Silence Buster, to Sleep Buster.
Tidus' path is middling on strength and is mostly about being agile and able to hit fast enemies. His path goes Haste, Slow, Hastega, Slowga.
Yuna is your White Mage and Lulu is your Black Mage.
Kimahri is a Wildcard and has no default path.
I'm loving watching you play the game your own way, but I don't want to see you back yourself into a corner, and I feel like it's reasonable to point this risk out since most of us will have first experienced the game with the protections of the Standard Sphere Grid.
This is great advice! The International version was kinda aimed at people who'd already played the original, a little like a "New Game +". The game is still balanced for each of the characters having a certain role (except maybe Kamahri) so, while you can take characters in other directions, you might have to grind or work harder to get the most out of a custom build.
Yeah, I tried explaining this characters having personalised lines in the sphere grid... She's unknowingly getting off course and its better to correct it now to get everyone back into their respective lanes.

I second this comment. In the very beginning she unknowingly selected the second option (which is in Japanese) that selects the 'expert' grid. She will unfortunately get stuck on later bosses if she doesn't correct path on some chars. (Tidus and Auron specifically) The game is unforgiving later on. Also: Lulu should look for the path of Firaga / Thundaga / Waterga magic and Yuna should look for the Cura / Curaga paths

if you backtrack to Luca after the operation, there is actually new dialogue with the NPCs regarding it. The attention to detail in this game was nuts and I'm pretty sure 99% of players never saw it
Based on what Dona said here, she thinks Yuna is a nepo-baby and views herself as the underdog. She sees Yuna getting praise and having lots of guardians without being particularly exceptional. Conversely, Dona has to work for everything.
Little tip going forward : try talking to all the npc you meet through Spira with the square button as well. Some of them are recruitable blitzball players. Many are way better at level 1 than the actual Besaid Aurochs that are in your team. That way, if you recruit a couple of them, you'll have a better team when you decide to get into blitzball. Oh and great job with the playthrough! I've really been enjoying these videos!
This!! This comment!! I hope she reads it! I feel she will love the post game challenges, or pre ending challenges depending on how things go. My best experience with this game was getting ultimate/celestial weapons, and Wakkas world champion/blitzball is quite the challenge! And you will miss alot of great players/npcs on the way if you don't start by the time you reach Mt gagazette
She's not going to read this. she ignored the BLitzball tutorial prompt for this as usual and doesn't tend to read comments enough to learn about this. A lot of people told her how Fort Condor works in remake and rebirth and she just powered through it without bothering with the tutorials there either.

This is definitely my favorite Final Fantasy cast ever. I know a ton of people love FFVII but I believe because it was the first to revolutionize any sort of 3d as well as a deep story, but this was THEE Final Fantasy experience that Square was looking for after 9 games imo.
For me 7 will always be the best. But this and 9 are close. I think story of 9 is just as good. But technology has come far between these 2 games.
You may have already figured it out, since these are delayed releases. But there is an Overdrive menu in the main menu that will help understand the different Overdrives a bit better.
FFX was unlike any other world Final Fantasy has created. Its either western medieval/steampunk fantasy or sci-fi fantasy. I hope they have the creative ambition/inspiration to make another one that feels unique.
That being said it's still amazing what they do every game. They start from scratch with every single FF. Whole new combat, story, world, everything. They don't have to do this, but its what they do every time.
Also this is definitely the most mature of all Final Fantasy games (yes that includes XVI). Not in terms of language or violence but the heavy themes are something that hit A LOT harder as adults.
I wish I could experience these games and the brilliance of Nobuo Uematsu's music for the first time again. I'm kind of jealous of Maggie.
We experience it again by watching her experience it for the first time.
Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano were also composers for the game. Hamauzu especially had some iconic ones in this game including 彷徨の炎 Wandering Flame
Your Aeons can use their own elemental magic on themselves to heal themselves. So for example, Ifirit can use Fire/Fira/Firaga on himself to heal - it wont harm them. Use that battle tip for strategy! ✌🏼

"Ride zee shoopuff?" I'll never get over the charming creatures that are always in Final Fantasy games. Shoopuffs are a delight. More seriously, I like the story Auron shares about Ject. I think it's really interesting that the game shows both that Ject was a terrible father to Tidus, but also that he genuinely became a better person in Spira. It's quite nuanced.
“Ride zee shoopuff?” That line has lived in my head rent free for years somehow lol
I can imagine the bitter complicated feelings of jealousy, anger, and inadequacy that fact would create quite easily. In fact I can feel something similar every time I think of it. It’s an intimately familiar feeling and extremely hard to reconcile with.
I see a couple comments already addressing the Overdrive Modes and the Healer/Warrior ones you recently acquired for Yuna and Tidus respectively, but thought I'd go into it a little further: first you want to go into your menu to "Overdrive" > "Set Mode", and you should then see all the different Overdrive Modes you've unlocked per character. Depending on the mode you set the character to, that character will then increase their Overdrive meter based on that new mode's requirements - so for Stoic, which is the default for everyone, you gain Overdrive meter for taking damage, but with Warrior for example, you gain Overdrive meter for attacking the enemy, which is really useful when you want to be more in control of when you acquire a full Overdrive meter for that character. Hope this helps. :)

Couple more tips!
New overdrive modes all have unique conditions to learn, like kill X enemies or heal Y times. You've just been using Yuna long enough now for her to learn Healer naturally, it didn't come from the weapon. And you need to go into the overdrive mode menu to equip it.
When you're trying to select a character in battle, sometimes Left-Right switches between enemies/allies, and Up-Down cycles you through the current group. But sometimes it's vice-versa, depending (I think) on camera position. So it can even change mid-battle! Figure out which pair of directions is which action, should make it easier to get your cursor to move where you want it to.
A monster can only drop one type of sphere when killed, so you only need to use a single "Extract Power/Speed/Magic/Ability" per enemy. And don't use these abilities on bosses! They can drop better spheres, don't want to "overwrite" their drop.
The sphere grid is kinda meant to follow a line specifically for that character. When you unlocked the lines earlier with lvl unlock spheres, you unknowingly left that character's intended line and move into the other grids, which is not optimal until end game (when you've completed the character's personalized sphere grid). Might have to grind to get them back on track in their respective character's grids.
There is another comment like this that lists the correct paths for the chars. Would recommend looking for it if you see this Kasta. The games late game is brutal and you wont be able to beat certain bosses later on if your characters arent on the correct paths (or they will be much harder than expected at least)
Not really later she gets mix and has two people with use already. She might need to grind later a bit but that is part of the experience of rpgs in a way
Scans do tell you elemental weakness by the way! It’s a chart (1.5x - 50% extra damage, 1/2x - half damage, / for null and + is absorbs) and the color corresponds to the element (red/fire, white/ice, blue/water, yellow/thunder).
Dang the O'aka hate is real lmao! I get that O'aka isn't the most pleasant person but if you continue to donate a high amount of gil, he does give you a good discount throughout your progression. Plus he also does carry some good stuff for the group. If you ever change your mind lol
The O'aka backstory is also really interesting and give a lot more nuance and depth to him. I like that he is not just a joke npc or a simple merchant. But his backstory is quite hidden in optional dialogues (especially after one event of the main story, if you go back to a specific place in a specific city, there's a secret revelation that most people don't know about because it's well hidden).
That's something I love about FFX, so much hidden stuff about the lore, the characters and other type of secrets, it's kinda crazy when you think about it.
FYI if you told Gatta to join the fight during Mi’hen operation it would be Gatta who died and Luzzu grieving over his death. There’s also a bit of a moment with Luzzu and Wakka there that talks about Wakka’s past.

I don't actually think it's mentioned specifically anywhere else in the game, but if you talk to one of the guards in the Moonflow multiple times, he says that Al Bhed have green eyes with spiral pupils, and they use goggles to hide this from people (since they're not much liked in Spira). This is also probably why Yuna has one green eye since she's half Al Bhed ^^

I NEVER in like 20 years made that connection of Sin homing in Tidus being just like the way it infamously goes after the Sinspawn. Mind blown.

I thought, "I wonder if the next FFX is up." I check, and it's been up for 6 minutes.
I like the scene in front of the Djose temple with Yuna waking up late. After everything they’ve all seen, Yuna and her Guardians are trying to enjoy the company of one another on such a dangerous and harrowing journey. Sin can’t take that away from them if they don’t let it. Even Auron, whose character in other games would normally be the “strong silent type” without exception is able to laugh and joke with the group. Everyone has a personality and the group actually likes one another.
I also personally enjoy that Tidus is an emotional guy. Yes, sometimes overly emotional, but he’s not one of these stone faced protagonists that are closed off and ices everyone out. Nothing wrong with those types of characters either, I just enjoy the fact that sometimes a protagonist who is emotional and sensitive can still be seen as strong and charismatic, lie Tidus.

Tidus really is a great character. Though overall I do think that most FF leads are quite emotional people. The ones that seem to not be almost always turn out to be really unhealthily trying to hide their true selves or from their emotions. This suppression almost always ends up being a problem that affects the plot of the game drastically. Part of the lesson in those games is that being that way is not good or healthy.
Unfortunately a lot of young people especially boys came away with the opposite message somehow. Kind of like how lots of people think Captain Kirk was a maverick borderline rebellious captain. When in the original StarTrek show he is possibly the most by the book captain of the entire series. He is clever and will occasionally bend the rules if pushed and there seem to be very little rules about alien romance in Star-fleet at the time.
Kasta, you’re making Sir Auron, my most favourite character EVER, weak like Tidus. Please find his abilities on the sphere grid and guide him back to the proper path. Find “magic break” or “armour break” and you’ll rediscover his proper path. Having two Tiduses is NOT good.
Kasta, you keep spamming power break on fiends that you can kill in one hit. Which means you’re just wasting MP.
You got to learn what the skills do. They don’t increase attack strength.
It's been driving me crazy that she hasn't realized you don't want to have two characters on the same path, especially when they're so different lol
It's her first playthrough, on expert too, expert is supposed to be hard. She said she'll play again sometime in the future with the hd version, just hope she plays basic mode on that personally. Expert is meant to be messy though, it's not meant to be "the ways they are supposed to go".

@@TheRealAhoy “Expert” is easy. It’s actually stupid. The original version is harder. With expert you can have 3 healers at once before you hit Djose.
First playthrough or not, I beat this game in elementary school. Kasta is in her 20s and she’s played two FF games before this. No excuse far as I’m concerned.

Yuna's mother is Al Bhed, not her father. In Luca, Yuna asked Tidus if he had encountered an Al Bhed by the name of Cid, who is her mother's brother. 👍
You were able to beat the summoner battle easier because of that +4 Magic you gave Yuna.
Anytime you activate nodes on the sphere grid with Yuna it powers up her Aeons. That magic significantly improved them all.
I really like how you are doing this playthrough. FFX is an amazing game and I'm glad you're appreciating it! I think you really nailed the format for this playthrough (taking time to talk about the story, your interpretations, etc). I'll continue this adventure with you and I'll gladly watch others from other games like this in the future!
Don't forget you can cure/heal your party members when you're between fights and just walking around, will save some turns when in fights.

So every time I played through the game, at some point you may get to a boss you just cant beat and you will be stuck. The answer to that will be to go back and grind so you can progress further in the sphere grid. That should also help with your farming for the resources needed to add ability to weapons and the aeons. Loveing this playthrough btw. 😊
I am so happy we get to watch you experience and enjoy this game so much! My cheeks hurt from smiling at you having fun with a game that is very near to my heart and still go back to years after it came out. I hope you're considering playing x-2 as well after you finish this. It's an almost direct sequel.
For lulu look for the path that has Thundaga, Firaga,… Don’t deviate her, she will be more useful as a Black Mage for most of the game.
Every moment tidus' the narrative tidus speaks, will come back to you, all those cutscenes, the music with critical snd cryptic input from future tidus, will be super relevant later on, and the fact that u pause and reflect on them now just shows how much you are playing this game to it's full potential!!

Yup, O’aka is more pricey, but he has access to and carries some very powerful and useful weapons and armor that regular shops don’t carry, so don’t snub him, his weapons will give you a hand up in battles 😉

Brian and Yenke may be assholes, but those lines always make me laugh... and sometimes pop into my head for no reason whatsoever 😅
Hey Kasta. just a quick tip. you can heal outside of battle using magic. it will help you going into battle with a good amount of hp. glad you are playing the game and enjoying it.
Big tip that will help with long roads: Yuna can cure outside of battle using the ability menu. Go to Abilities and then Yuna and then Cure and you can just heal up outside of battle
I think up to this point we've seen so many emotional situations, great character introductions and story developments, far more than most (story) games can even manage in their entire length. But that was only a "warm up" for that masterpiece of a game
Well, +20% Magic would be amazing if Kimahri actually would use magic that depends on magic power...

Either Luzzu or Gatta can survive Mi'ihen operation. When Gatta asks you what he should do. If you tell him to fight x2 then he will ignore his orders and Gatta will die instead of Luzzu.
Btw there are overdrives and then there are overdrive modes. The Overdrive modes determine how you charge your Overdrive. Everyone begins with stoic which accumulates by receiving damage. But there are others that you gain as you accomplish certain things. check them out in the overdrive section in the menu.

Idk if anyone has told you this yet, but it’s good to have every character get a turn in a boss battle so everyone can get alot of XP
in every battle, even. At this rate some boss battles will be insanely hard, especially since some characters don't follow their paths on the sphere-grid...
Fun fact: Depending on your interactions, Gatta can be the one that dies and Luzzu is still around.
Bear in mind as you play there is a soft 'friendship' mechanic, that will affect some scenes/conversations you have with different characters later on. My tip is to keep talking to your favourites over and over if you want to see specific moments with that character.
If you talk to everyone evenly/regularly, these scenes usually play out with Lulu FYI
this expert grid is doing a number of Kasta right now 😂 but hey! T'is the game of FFX, just gotta grind your way to the top
also, when she wondered why anyone would throw gil away... it has saved me a few times...
Another tip! If you see Belgemine coming up at anypoint, try build up both Yuna's and her Aeon's overdrives so you can wombo-combo her at the beginning of the battle :)
Also I'm pretty sure Valefor is a girl. Look at her chest when you summon her xD
I don't know if you already know this but it's recommended to let every party member gain EXP for every battle. To gain EXP a party member has to perform any action during fight; therefore, it's a good idea to first bring in all the party members you don't want to use for that particular fight and let them defend themselves (Triangle button) and then switch in the party members you want to fight with.

Blitzball will be your favorite problem befor you know it.
1:56:00 Sonic Wings is like a weaker version of Quick Hit (a move on the sphere grid) they ended up nerfing them in the remaster. You can loop with Sonic Wings in this version, and are able to do slight loop with quick hit with high agility plus haste.
I started playing the game again after 20 or so years because of your playthrough, but I'm trying to stay behind you story wise so I see everything here the first time. I'm doing the Mi'ihen Operation right now. I guess when I'm caught up to you and there's no new video I'm gonna do some blitzball... or continue Astro Bot^^
You can use haste on all characters as well. Always good in longer fights.

Hey Kasta. As I post this, I've reached "the desert". One game away from getting Wakka's 3rd Overdrive, but I've postponed Blitzball for a bit to focus on the main storyline.
Great progress by the way! I away how you'll deal with a certain difficulty spike of a fight coming up relatively soon; you'll know it when you get there, its the first multi-phase fight in the game so far, and I died once because of not doing a certain something; which sucks, cause the first time round, I stole more and pilfered more gil. Oh well. Glad you're enjoying the ride and thanks again for getting me back into FFX
These videos don't come out fast enough :D Your videos really help distract me from reality. They take me back to my childhood watching my dad play through this game. Once I was deemed old enough to play it myself there was no turning back.
There ARE some al-bhed primers that are in areas that you can't return to

Minor note: There is a limit to how many weapons and armor you can carry. The number is pretty high, but eventually sell what you dont use.
Also, she should sort her equipment before trying to sell so all Tidus's weapons are together, etc. Makes things way easier.

Yeah, this is the second time during this playthru where she’s cut it right before a big scene. I went “noooo!!” When she stopped this episode, as well as the Kilika episode where she cut it right before the sending scene, lol.
These episodes can’t come out fast enough.
Oh my this was fun to watch! Listening to your insights makes watching so much more interesting. Can't wait to see your reaction as to whether they play out or not. You should start to sort the weapons and armor; it makes selling decisions much easier. Again, have fun!
important to remember that you can scout ANY NPC by going up to them and pressing square (should check everyone when you are talking to them), if they play blitzball you will get a little information window about their skills and their required salary.
I will give you this tip, scout "Brother" when possible and put him as your midfielder, his speed is insane and can basically just run past opponents without getting encounters and his shooting is pretty good too so he can just go straight to the goal and score a lot.
scout Linna she is coming up! Best midfielder in the game. She missed a few good ones though like Shaami, Ropp

Some advice: Spend some time going through your menu options again. The Ability menu lets you use Yuna's cure spells on your party outside of battle. The Overdrive menu lets you set different overdrive modes, like Healer and Warrior for your characters. These options don't change what overdrive you have. It just changes what actions need to be taken in order to charge the overdrive bar.
During battle, when you scan an enemy (or target with a character who has Sensor on their weapon), on the left side of the screen, there's a box with some symbols and some colored circles. The "X1.5" symbol means they are weak to a certain element. A "+" means that they absorb that element and will heal from it instead of taking damage. A "1/2" symbol means they only take half damage. The colored circles are: Red (fire), Yellow (Thunder), Blue (Water), White (Ice).
Ifrit, Ixion, and the next Aeon you get are all aligned to a certain element. They absorb their element. So go to the Black Magic menu, select their element (for example, Fire for Ifrit), then target themselves. They will heal instead of taking damage.

The crusaders were once called the Crimson Blades, 800 years prior to the main story, they were excommunicated from Yevon. Their leader Lord Mi'ihen, convinced Yevon clergy that they were doing good and were brought under their control. Yevon changed their name to Crusaders.

I stuggled with the sphere grid during my first playthrough so bad. We couldnt just google stuff back then lol. I went and bought the strategy guide book. It has the recommended sphere grid for all the characters and the stat for all the feinds. There where bosses I could never beat without it 😂

should definitely really explore the options and info available in the abilities section of the menu. might make a difference in how you think about what you need to do between battles
Weapon tip: Weapons have auto-abilities/stats like 'Pierce', 'Strength +3%', 'Scan". A weapon with Scan ability automatically lets you see monster's HP, only available when the character equipped with it is in battle.
Overdrive tip: When a character learns an "Overdrive Mode", check the menu and Overdrive section.

Menu tip: You can use Yuna's white magic abilities from the menu screen.
Attack skills tip: Almost all the attack skills your physical attackers use are for applying debuffs and status ailments, there is no boosted damage with these attack skills. For example, Power Break has a % chance to lower the monster's Power, no additional damage is done.
Equipment tip: Equipment with "ward", for example "Poison ward" is not 100% guaranteed, it is a % chance to prevent poison. I don't think the game really tells you this.
