Hearing "sorry" instead of "good game" after a game sounds so heartbreaking.
I suppose it's because by their standards the game was not good at all. At some point Nepo was at 88% accuracy. And Fabi had like 3-4 times decisive advantage. But did not see the winning move.
It's becoz he didn't win and he can't blunder and let fabi win either . They killed eachother chance letting gukesh prevail 🎉. Good damn sportsmanship right here 🎉❤
Thats true, it comes to mind the game between Rapport and Pragg, with Rapport also saying sorry at the end.
One who was leading the tmt... telling sorry to other ,who missed win ... though being Indian I am extremely happy for Gukesh...but this is heartbroken ...Chess is painful, ruthless, brutal sport
They Did not deserver to play for world champion tilte after game like that. Literaly Botez would find that mate.
4:09 Nepo - “I am very sorry”, Fabi - “My fault “ 😭😭💔
Why tho?
@@tanyapaes781Fabi was winning but couldn't convert... And now all their hard work feels wasted. That's why they're saying sorry to each other. It's really sad if u think about it from their perspective.
Cositas ❤
without context, it sounds like lovers that are breaking up 😭😭
@@Awarewolf047 my take is that Ian said sorry because Fabi looked up at him to say, lets call it a draw and Ian saying sorry that I'm accepting a draw and ruined your chance (and his small chance) to remain in the competition.
the reason why Ian apologized was mainly because they both GM and both understood Fabi was always in a better position and should have won.
Fabi said "it's my fault" for two reasons. first he offered the draw but mainly because he's telling Ian you have nothing to be sorry for, it was me (Fabi) who is at to blame for not converting so many chances and Fabi knows he chocked, take away the pressure and Fabi 8/10 will convert those chances.
"I- I'm very, very sorry."
"My fault."
My heart breaks as a Fabi and Nepo fan 😭
@PeterGriffin-po2ze fabi was winning at first, and if he did, he would've tied 1st place, leading to tiebreaker
instead he blundered, which ian noticed, leading to a draw, so they both went to tied 2nd place and lost the chance to win the tournament
@@hamham_6411 And what nobody seems to think about:
If this wouldnt have been the last match, nepo might very well have resigned before the blunder
@@hamham_6411 but it doesn't explains why Ian have to be sorry... It's not a giveaway win for Fabi - he had to prove that he deserves it. But Fabi made a mistake and that's definitely not Ian's fault. That's part of chess - when you or your opponent blunder and the other one use it. They were both fighting till the end as it has to be. No one have to be sorry and nobody's fault - we are not computers, but people who makes mistakes, especially under such pressure
@@kamelia_s_4187 He's not apologizing, he's empathizing. As in, "sorry for your loss".
@@AfonsoCL Aaa... understood... Thank you for the explanation)
No single chess achievement will likely eclipse the title of world champion. But what nepo just showed to me, as a fan of chess, means so much more. No matter who would have won I would not felt the amount of love and sportsmanship that I just witnessed. Bless both of your hearts and minds with peace knowing that both of you are so much more than a title.

@@makingmach7 I think he's past his best. every super GM says Ian only plays well in candidates and after he's mediocre. next year everyone will improve so even harder. his chance is over.
@@gabrieloliveirafreitassant8752he is extremely good in the candidates and with Magnus no longer defending he has pretty decent chances
Yes
Ian is not only a fierce competitor - but a true gentleman. He knew he was losing and could resign. But at the same time, he was playing for himself - defended like a true Chess player. Eventually he was torn between 2 choices - 1) Perhaps he was in the way of another great player's goal 2) Being true to himself and fighting till the end. He knew it was Fabi's shortcomings not to convert this into a win. Yet he is saying "sorry" (Fabi acknowledged his failure too). Great match, great spirit, great human beings. We, the followers, have witnessed something special. Thank you.
A world-class athlete cannot simply give up for the sake of an opponent. He has ambitions. Ian understood that Fabi also wanted to win and he was closer, but simply giving the victory to his opponent was unsportsmanlike. Ian and Fabi are not Magnus, but they are top-class chess players, both among the best of their generation (Magnus competes with timeless legends, another level). And they both understood that their character would not allow either of them to simply retreat. Otherwise they would not have achieved what they have.
Two professionals, two gentlemen, two legends.
So you want spot-fixing between the players? 😐
1:25 - that look, just a tiny smile... these eyes say more than any words, that describes the feeling of being second, being just one small step away of desired goal. Fascinating players, both respecting each other as it should be
It shows vulnerability he is accepting his chance slipped away. Yes very brave and he handled it well

Surely, they want to make chess reach to places. But their main motive is to promote chess. Their wedding, their life before this channel, it explains a lot about them.

Nepo is such a gem of a person.
He Knew he was supposed to lose somewhere while playing that endgame. And yet he fought. The fight was futile for his own chances. It bought him no hope for win, all he could even hope for was a draw. And a draw was not enough for the scoring situation for Nepo. But still he fought on.
This final game from the candidates demonstrates why chess is a Gentleman's game. Beautiful.
Lmao gem. Just search harikrishna vs nepo
@@user-hf4jz8uj5nHarikrishna was messing up placements a lot. Anyone would be frustrated. Not his fault at all. Don’t just “lmao” when you don’t understand whose fault it was.
He literally said Alireza threw away the tournament……..well that wasn’t professional
I like it too. its fair play towards gukesh, too. throwing that game would potentially, maybe, mess up the candidates for someone else, so playing this as serious as can be even if you already see that you can't get more than a draw and thus not enough anymore is a very respectable thing to do.
@@proxima713Actually it was, this is acknowledging how good Ali really is and that his performance was due to lack of preparedness only.
As another comment pointed out, in 2:04 Nepo said: "Alireza might be happy thinking he threw the tournament for everyone". I don't think Alireza lost on purpose, but it is true that because of that game, Gukesh almost had the win of the Candidates in the bag. Hikaru, Nepo and Fabi were in a difficult position. I think Hikaru did well in the last round, but he had no chance to win because Gukesh defended well. Regarding the Nepo-Fabiano match, the must-win requisite influenced them negatively, which is understandable because of the pressure.
Going back to Nepo's statement, it's interesting that he said "he threw the tournament for everyone", not "for us", so it seems that he included Hikaru as well because the latter was also fighting for a win instead of a draw. Heartbreaking.
Nepo was leading during the entire tournament only to lose in the last round, and he even felt sorry for the other two competitors. This is simply chess, and all of them did impressive.
Ok, but what about Abasov? He gifted free points to everyone except Nepo...Nepo must be pissed bcz of this too.
@@prakyathprakash5180 This disrespect for Abasov is so annoying. He fought very hard and people had to show their best to beat him. No free points at all. Up to the point where he had an advantage in the second game against Hikaru (after being worse beforehand), but lost. Only then he collapsed for the rest of the tournament.
Besides he did nothing in his comments or else to deserve such dump comments.
Terrible format is bad who would’ve thought… oh yea magnus did
@@reyknn7664 He complained about Alireza's shoes when no one else did... He deserves no respect
@@KilluaaZoldyck This is plain Nonsense. Even Alireza said he was right in complaining. Beside that he was sitting nearest to Alireza's room. But even without this the silence of the others doesn't necessarily mean disagreement.
For all saying that Nepo shouldn't be sorry:
By saying sorry Nepo didn't mean "I am sorry for defending the position", but rather meant "I feel your pain in drawing the match". The same way you tell someone who lost a loved one "I am SORRY for your loss" It was empathy of Fabiano's situation.
For those who also don't understand the context of the video, by drawing the game, both players ruined their chances of winning the tournament and competing in the world championship. They both played the best chess they could, but lost their chance in winning the tournament. Tough luck
No one has been through more top level shenanigans than Ian. It also explains why he is able to empathise with Fabi better than anyone else.
very good point. Also, I really didnt expect Nepo to be such an empathetic nice gentleman. I am pleasently surprised
@@SilvioMichal1Because he went through that heartbreak which is much worse losing the WC title.

I am an Indian and as much we were cheering for Gukesh, I'd love these two gentlemen to also win it, Fabi looks so vulnerable here such a massive talent with pure innocence, also Nepo showed his class and vulnerable side by saying sorry at the very end, keeping it all within (how could he express it because he was competing & representing his nation while fighting his opponent) !! I watched this game till the end, it was a special game a really nail biting game that kept me on the edge of my seat, not because the result of this was critical but because it was two heavy weights fighting and was an insane battle.

I second that, 1:23, 1:28 probably the most moved I've been watching chess. Fabi's stoic draw-offer and maintaining eye contact... that's sort of like Achilles and Hector stuff... Nepo almost loses his composure at that moment out of sheer empathy
plus those harrowing glances from Nepo to Fabi at 0:57 etc, they are filled with the awareness of the horrors that chess can bring, from one giant to another... I mean, even the way Nepo knocked out the repetition, to give the mercy blow... gives me a whole new perspective the humanity of both players really
In time, both will be celebrated if not already for gifting us of the greatest examples of tactics and missed opportunities in the history of the Candidates.
Everything we love about our beloved game was put on display here. The tension, the tactics, the drama, the emotions.
There is absolutely nothing to apologize for or be sorry about. You both honored chess by playing right down to the wire under pressure that most of us cannot even begin to conceive.

I think Nepo is feeling sorry more because Caruana had a big advantage and wasn't able to convert, than because they drew the game and neither of them won the tournament. He's obviouslt disappointed for himself too, to have not won this tournament. He can't really kick himself too much, he went undefeated at the end of the day.
There were times in the endgame, with Fabi under some time pressure, that Fabi could have easily blundered the game away. I watched this live, and what an end. It is one of the reasons why I love chess so much, it is a brutal game. 2 all-time great players, both have faced tremendous adversity, I hope one day one of them becomes world champion. Or perhaps both as they both deserve it.
All the Love and Huge respect to both Ian and Fabi
