According to Google: Sting's song "Desert Rose" from his 1999 album Brand New Day has a North African feel that's influenced by the Algerian folk music style known as Raï. Raï is a type of African folk-blues that may have originated in the early 20th century. Sting collaborated with Algerian songwriter Cheb Rabah (Rabah Zarradine) and Algerian raï singer Cheb Mami on the song, which Sting wrote in Paris after discovering the Raï music scene there. Mami's music blends Mediterranean and Western influences, including Turkish, Flamenco, Greek, and Latin music, and his voice has Andalusian accents.
Glad you enjoyed it! One of my favorite Sting songs. :)
I highly suggest doing the studio version. You should hear it even if you don't react to it in a video (although I wouldn't hate that, lol). The mix takes these two great voices into angelic. It's quite spectacular. This was wonderful... the studio version is masterful.
Sting is one of the singer whose voice got better with age. I loved him in the Police already, but his solo works are breathtaking. He's a musical genius. My personal favourites are Fields of Gold, Fragile, The hounds of winter, I hung my head, Shape of my heart. His work with philharmonic orchestras is unbelievably great. Go down this rabbit hole, it's very well worth the journey and many wonderful and inspiring songs await you.
Kinda find this as his Swan Song... Chebs voice brings awesome from my eyes... This song is once in a lifetime in it's beauty, meaning, depth, arrangement and masterful melding of 2 vastly different universes!
I remember listening to this on my headphones trying to sing chebs part out loud. Then my mom bust through my door thinking I was having a seizure or something
Checkout Putri Ariani's version sings alone Arabic n English....you will enjoy...it's her concert uploads channel...Official Konser Putri Ariani channel...then I will survive by Putri on her channel Putri Ariani....the world loves it😊

I know (almost all of us know) you Britt love and always prefer to watch live performance videos. Sometimes though (like this one), once you've already watched this live version, I recommend you 110% to watch also the original version video. You'll notice the difference to the live version and you'll love it.
Oh, Britt, you will love Sting on his own. Truly great with Police, but his solo work is All Time PDC content for the finer of humans. As several have noted, this official video is very good! (Been an adoring fan here for quite a while, but don't know if I have enjoyed Britt reacting to Van Morrison??)
FYI, Tom MacDonald just issued a rare non-Friday release of a song about the Trump debacle called "You Missed." It's crazy he wrote the music, the lyrics and the beat, then recorded, mixed, mastered and shot a video for this song and released it all in less than 24 hours.
I saw Sting in concert around the time this song was in popular rotation on radio. I imagine it was too popular to exclude from the play list, and he simply could not drum up a suitable alternate for the whole tour, but it was WEIRD hearing it without Cheb Mami.

Middle Eastern, Northern African singers & music are just outstanding to listen to: violin, oud etc...just stunning melodies.

I fell in love with this song when it first came out.
Such an amazing song. Probably my favorite Sting song.
Faouzia has been singing her own version of this song for years. React to her singing it!
It's a style of Arabic! This is Mediterranean music!
If there wasn't an actual Rocket Scientist in Queen, Stink might be the smartest man playing music. He embraces a variety of musical styles.
