    99% of guitar heroes always act like nobody taught them anything…Jason always gives credit to his teacher Matt. Of course Jason had the motivation that only the elite have, but its always really cool to see him mention his teacher. A truly great one, Jason Richardson

      99%? Lol. Almost every "guitar hero" has multiple interviews where they talk specifically about their influences, who they learned from, etc.

    This was a great video. Jason looks like a hyperactive person, in a good way. Seemed very communicative and accessible to me. A view on how people got where they are is always interesting.

    I played a lot as child too. But I didn't progress because all I played was power chords. I'm 37 now and recently decided to actually start practicing with structure. So rather than jamming 12 hours a day I practice in 1 hour stints multiple times a day (on my off days) and 1-2 hours every evening during work days and I specifically target one technique. Let me tell you I've progressed so much just in 2-3 months it's insane. You know the Paul Gilbert practice riff? I couldn't play that at all 2-3 months ago. Now I can play it at about 100bpm when I'm warmed up. Imagine where I'll be in 5 years. So my experience is that practicing with a structure and taking frequent breaks for your brain to form new connections (muscle memory) is waaaaaaay more effective than just pushing yourself for 12 hours a day non stop and just jamming around.

    I like the contrast in the way they dress. Kiko's style is so reminiscent of 70's and 80's heavy metal fashion and Jason's style is influenced so much by internet memes and modern alternative fashion.
    It's almost like a visual representation of passing on the torch. Like kiko said "wow this is the next generation" and he's right.
    Kiko may not be revered as much as past metal legends like Marty Friedman or Dimebag Darrell but Kiko's work on Angra shows that his skill and knowledge is in the same league

    The lamb of god riff also got me on the school. I remember the time I escaped from physical education class just to practice Laid to rest and some Sylosis riffs that I loved. The teacher eventually found me because I could not resist connecting my guitar to an amplifier they had for performances in the classroom.

    I've had bad tendonitis which stopped me practicing guitar for years. However, weight training--especially bicep curls and reverse bicep curls with slow negatives, about 3-4 seconds--really pretty much sorted it, and I'm free to practice all the time now. A few sets--3-5--per exercise, of this type of weight training, 2-3 times per week, would be a good place to start for anyone reading this who has tendonitis and is feeling down because they've had to stop guitar. I sold my Ibanez Prestige in 2016 as I thought I'd never practice again. Don't let this happen to you.

    Very interesting interview! In particular, the "tendinitis" part was very enlightening for me : I experienced similar "wrist pain" issues at the beginning of this year, after "overpracticing" over the course of last year, and got very worried about my ability the practice guitar.
    As stated, being more careful about my hand position, I have managed to avoid it coming back for the last months. In particular, I switch to "classical position" (I was a "blues position" player so far) more often when playing more technical licks.

    • @scottyecora
      @scottyecora 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Rob Mikels "I've settled for playing less and adjusting my playing technique". It's the same for me, unfortunately. And as I have been typing on a computer keyboard several hours a day for fifteen years, which seems to be the root cause of my problems, i have to be particularly careful as I cannot afford neither not typing nor playing guitar anymore.

Cause i would take my acoustic to everywhere, every day, i am prety sure that this people do not say this things to me like that today cause i nailed it (ego inflates), and that is the thing, there is no time for learning playing an instrument, you make your time and the time is always now. I do not know music theorie and i have no lessons so the only thing was my ear and youtube in early 2000. What im getting at is i can play some of those wicked fast riffs but in a very unorthodox way and im 35 in a couple weeks, should i just keep going on my path or straight up get into some lessons and learn a entirely new way to play, or am i considered a geezer by now in guitar years. When I first started playing I was practicing non stop.
    There for a while, I had no job and didn't go to school. I would play 20 hours, sleep a few hours, wake up and do it all over again. This happened for months.
    I got real good, real fast. But then life happened and I couldn't maintain that schedule. Still had a good amount of skill. Then I had kids.....
    Back then I was kind of bummed about not making a career of music. But now, as a 39 year old adult, I am glad. Touring does not seem like fun. Seems like hell. I'll take my self employment and free time at home. lol.

    I wonder if john petrucci is aware of the huge influence he has on so many guitar players around the world?! I can't think of any other musician beeing so highly rated in music history.

    • @HunterRouth
      @HunterRouth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Did you forget about Eddie Van Halen? Lol.
      He changed guitar playing, music, amps and guitars. Petrucci is not even close to that major of an influence. But yes. He has made a huge impact in his genre.

    • @psionic6126
      @psionic6126 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HunterRouth Historically yes, but Eddie was never the player i used to listen to because of his style and sound. Yes, he made tapping a big thing back then, but as an overall player, his book of knowledge had many empty pages. From this point i would rather say Shawn Lane was a much better guitarist in terms of technique and composing. John Petrucci combines all that into his own style and sound. There is nothing he can't play. And he showed the world a way of music, without the typical rock cliches like drugs and alcohol addiction. For him it is all about music as it is.

    • @HunterRouth
      @HunterRouth 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@psionic6126 It wasn't just tapping. That man's rhythm was unheard of in Rock N' Roll and Metal (which he was a hint of). He didn't have to "know" what he was doing to be musically successful or influential. He just was himself The drugs and alcohol are irrelevant. EVH was just as much in love with music and musical as Petrucci, Al Di Meola, Holdsworth (who was a huge fan of Eddie). All those guys would say that too. He may not have been "technically" as good as Shawn Lane (which no one is really, he was special). But to hold his own style and sound to make an impact beyond just guitar playing. He did. Petrucci was hugely influenced by EVH as well. Half of Paul Gilbert style is just sped up EVH licks. But those guys have influenced tons of guys and Petrucci might be the "EVH of the Modern Generation" or Steve Vai. But he still has nowhere near made the same impact as Eddie and that's ok. For the record, I'm a Petrucci nut. Lol. Petrucci is a King, I love him.

    Leave your electronics just push the knobs back into the Qatar take off the knobs with an Allen key and Andrew the night and then I’ll just slide into the guitar and put some tape at the back and tie all in and when you plug in is just one screw that take off the hard way and type and push it in and the pick up sleeve one screw taken under the screw put a little block under it and polish and just put it back in place why are you there you might as well take it to a guitar shop and get your threat Ford Specht by doing all that it will save you have to get it re-wired which is more money and fixing that ship has already cost you enough

    Isn’t achievement and if that’s what you want to achieve and even if it cost you 100 grand in lots of work and time and money and guitars and whatever other equipment if you’re happy with that that’s all that matters if that’s what you want to do in life as you know there’s a lot of musicians who are really good it don’t make a cent

    Yeah Tennis Elbow I get that at Tennis if I’m not pro Nading Incorrect movement you’ll get Tennis Albo there will be a way to fix it not sure how I’m Qatar I’m probably not at that level well I’m not where I pay for so long it affects me I get a sore hand first so until my hands strong enough my Albo can cope but I don’t know how to fix it I’m guitar I can show you for Tennis but not Contr unfortunately not sure it’s never happened to me on Qatar I held my guitar a bit differently I’m right-handed but I use my left thigh I find its most comfortable and I can see everything and even standing up I’ll keep it on my left side and saw a straight up in the air instead of you know how are you holding guitar I thought I hold it up like I’m shooting it to the sky strange but I complain like that easily comfortably and with practice I can get it comfortably and I can move my thumb around at the back up-and-down I find to adjust the fingers
