I’ve just bought myself one of these with just over 110k miles and the engine is still smooth.
The only thing I would say is to make sure that the safety catch on the bonnet is in the locking position when you put it down as it can rust or become stiff.
I didn’t check it after topping up the oil yesterday and after only owning the car for 6 hours I was heading along a dual carriageway at 65mph and the bonnet flew up and smashed my windscreen.
So just make sure to oil your safety latch on the bonnet 🙏

Bought mine- a 1.6l SXI sport hatch- a couple years ago in replacement of a 15 plate mini that was draining every aspect of my life. Fucking love the car, barely anything goes wrong drives really well, looks great and barely gives me any problems apart from general wear and tear. 14 years old and 99k miles and she's still fantastic

I had one from 2010-2015 (1.8 Sri xp) and loved it, so much so I’m here looking at vids of them.

U.S. citizen here. I've always loved how these looked. We got the Astra as a Saturn, but only for two years and with lame specs and highly restricted colour palette.

I picked my astra up at 76k miles for 1.5k, great price for a first car! Have had it 18 months now and absolutely still love it.
It does drink heavy on petrol, the gearbox had an issue and sometimes the engine loses power on long drives, probably due to age but worth noting.

I love my Astra, it’s a 2008 1.9 cdti Sri . The shape of these did it for me, the newer Astra’s look so rounded and boring.
The torque and pull on the diesels are awesome .

Good review, had my 59 reg for 8 years. Tbh it's been a good daily driver. 1.8 petrol can be a bit thirsty, alas it's probably going to go this year. I will miss it. Never kept a car so long lol!!!!

Got the Astra in the US badged as a Saturn Astra XR. 3 door. We could only have the ~140 hp engine (just like the SRi version) but not the VXR. It had the best handling in its class and a peppy engine. Beautiful car inside and out.

Thanks for the review I still have a 2007 sri 1.8 which I bought in 2018, 93,000 miles on it now but was only £1,350 back then, maybe a bit dated now in 2022 but adequate for the state of roads these days, and is not too bad on performance with sport mode on,gets you to a hundred in reasonable time on a quite morning.

The gearbox issues were caused by wrong oil fitted at factory ,I dropped mine and never had issues ,if you thrash em they will die ,the 1.8vvt is virtually bulletproof separate cam belt from water pump.Apart from coilpacks they are a good solid engine ,change oil every 5k to keep vvt in great condition

I just bought a 1.6t Sri for £650, it’s got the common gearbox whine issues and I’ll probably address that soon but it’s a tidy car with 19 inch Bola alloys with brand new tyres on it which are worth more than the car cost me. Power flow back box/decat (got the receipt for £600) induction kit on it and coil overs. Moted until dec

Been looking after my daughter's 1.6 petrol since August and driven it all over the country. Really nice car to drive and it really takes a back road apart well. I've been very pleasantly surprised. Compares favourably with her previous mk1 focus 1.6 which I passed on to her, a car I love, the mk 1 focus.... Focus a bit more fun but Astra corners flatter imo

So I’ve just bought a 1.6 Astra (2008) petrol, and it’s absolutely gutless. Has hardly any acceleration at all. Is this normal? Am I somehow missing something? Or am I just too used to my previous 2.0 bmw. Thanks and great video!

Had a Manta GTE coupe back in the day as we were a Vauxhall/Opel family as it were. I want to like Vauxhalls again but they seem to have been swept aside by the competition (German) maybe I should take a closer look at them! Agree this Astra has a good shape.

    • @FastandFun

I loved the Astra GTE’s from the late -80’s with the digital dash and do think they lost their way then, but this generation 5 really surprised me. It’s not fast, but quick enough for daily driving, surprising practical and the handling felt sharp and crisp.

I have a 2008 114k miles but it still feels tight as a drum. Needs a 6th gear, sits at 75-85 mph at around 4-4500 rpm I always feel the urge to drop it into 6th which it doesn't have so it's a bit thirsty and noisy as a result on motorway drives.
Mine has a sport button and other than an ever so slightly more instant throttle response it's completely useless at the cost of even more fuel, I call it the would you like to empty your tank for no reason button, great little car, don't bother with sport mode, needs a 6th gear.

Opel Astra has been around since 1991 in rest of europe. I have one, nice car 2006 model, 5 door version. 0.6 litres per 10 km is quite good for a petrol. 90 hp is slightly underpowered, but its ok.
