Where did you get the new display? I wonder what improvements are carried out by updating the bios? Did it fix the key velocity which was limited to 100 on the original DX7?
Just performed both of these upgrades. *ADJUST THE CONTRAST!* There's a trim pot/variable resistor to the left of the small ribbon cable on the main board, VR1. Otherwise the screen displays all white and you can only read it at an angle.
rwdplz1 I need your help with adjusting the contrast. How do you do it? I've got the board open and see what your talking about just don't know what to do
@@funkbrah270 If you found the VR1 variable resistor, it looks like a black half circle with two silver legs near the ribbon cable, and a circular silver circle in the middle of it with a rectangular hole. Put a tiny screwdriver in the rectangular hole, and turn it clockwise or counter-clockwise until the screen is readable.
Hi , great update lovely display I was wondering if you could help me I'm after a M58990PADC CHIP FOR THE DX7S these are rare and my tech said this would probably fix it.
No, it is built into the assembly. If it doesn't light up you probably need to return it as defective. I got mine from ebay. Just looked for new ones.... WOW the prices have skyrocketed. The one I purchased cost $28. I got it from user glitchscience. I don't think they have them anymore, but you could message them and ask. Good luck.
Thanks for the video! Some things I would have done different: -Use spacers on screws to fix the new, thicker display -Don't put your fingers on the new display (or if you do, then CLEAN it!) -Clean the display filter once you have it out of the unit, mainly the edges, as there is for sure some dirt there -Take care when reinstalling the crystal filter so you don't scratch it with the metal frame edges, as you did -Adjust contrast on new LCD (as other people has already said) -Use plastic tools or a real IC extractor to remove ICs (this is perhaps picky but well, I would do that way!)
Actually, you missed another oopses I had... I forgot to run the cable through the frame and had to go back and correct it... If you don't it will tend to press on the c# key... As for the contrast, I did adjust it later, but at the angle I tend to play, it was pretty good. Spacers are a good idea, Wish I would have thought about that originally. Also wonder why the new display didn't come with new ones.
That very full (cramped?) circuit collection inside of the Yamaha DX7 makes me think that this piano was very advanced for it's time.
Yay, it's back in the danger zone! :-)
Brings back memories of pushing "caterpillars" into the motherboard on my old 286 back in the day. Looks nice.
thanks for your video !!

In my case I put the screen on, the characters are visible but there is no lighting, do you have to do something else for the backlight?

citizennerd how do you adjust the contrast?
@@funkbrah270 did you resolve this? Ive the same question
Solved my jones for the DX7 wth a Reface DX. Not the same but I'm not a big synth person either.
You forgot to adjust brightness & contrast. Default contrast is too high, as seen by the blocks on the display.
VR1 is used for contrast adjustment.
discoHR nice what do all the other trim pots do ?
THIS. I thought mine was defective, found and read the instructions.
Upgrade with SupeMax card - and you will get SuperDX7
Links ?
easiest synth to work on. damn korg T-series are nightmare. impossible to get to LCD or switches.
How much money will it take you to sell this to me !?
How do I get one of these?
Got a backlit LCD from a guy in Germany. Thanks for the video.
U can tell u got a bubble gut.... U breathing hard
