Verdi's masterful writing comes across in this version - even though the English language doesn't have the broad vowels that makes Italian so effective for opera writing - bravo to the 4 singers !
Buy a ticket and go then. The words are presented above the stage. I follow them when I go to ENO. And if your problem is that you understand the original Italian better, you already know that the words are often mangled to fit bel canto demands.
As I can’t make out the words it doesn’t matter to me what language they are singing. Wonderful singing nonetheless, but why oh why do the directors think they must update production. A duke in army uniform and his 20th century jester? Anachronism piled in anachronism. It’s like Julius Caesar in modern dress with swords and daggers.
Can we purchase these performances somewhere? I have the La Boheme with Alfie Boe and like very much that it is in English because I get tiered or reading the subtitles but I cannot find any other DVD's from ENO. I'd buy them all!
Perhaps you are new to opera? In past centuries, various versions of each opera were performed in various languages. For example, Tristan und Isolde (1856) was still being performed in Italian after WWII by Callas. Modern productions give a different tone to everything, like newer painting methods. I also guarantee that every historical production you’ve ever seen looks nothing like the performances during Verdi’s lifetime. With all this in mind, it’s best for everyone to enjoy the variety that does exist, since there’s no guarantee that these productions will continue ‘forever’ so to speak.
I agree. There is only one version of Hamlet and it's the one performed at Shakespeare's Globe under Elizabeth I. All the others, especially in foreign languages, are inferior and unworthy of the title, Hamlet.

English has all the vowels Italian does and more. Italian has only 5 plus schwa. Not sure what that has to with the poetics of either language.
Awesome..., this is a really beautiful part of Rigoletto. Thanks, English National Opera, for sharing this great video.
Seen this production many times since the 1980’s and it is utterly brilliant!
Kenneth Joynson it took me back to seeing Alan Opie, Cathryn Pope and Jean Rigby in the 90s. Wonderful production, never ages. :)
Beautiful music 🎶🎶
I can understand this in English and just as good as anything else
Amazing performances from all involved,a wonderful production and an absolute delight to watch, thank you.
Outstanding!!!... And, BEAUTIFUL!!
Terrific.
Outstanding!
Goosebumps on goosebumps
This is all you'd want of a live performance. Some parts a little draggy and flat, but who cares,. Staging, talent, music. This is magic.
Outstanding 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
thank you for this beautiful performance, I love ENO
Excellent: the soprano, especially, is superb.Pity, though, that I cannot hear most of the words.

I thought I'd dislike this and I was completely wrong. Awesome job :D

Cast?
This for my mapeh uggghh
Valeu a tentativa, mas o inglês não é idioma para o bel canto.
Bravi cantanti ma, in inglese non si può sentire...😑
😝😝
I don't know what this was but it certainly wasn't Rigoletto. Wrong language, wrong costumes, just the same tune.
I completely agree with you
