This is the BEST tutorial I have ever seen! NOTHING else even comes close. So many instructors go too fast, or they click buttons without telling you what they're doing (because they're so familiar with what they're doing, but they forget that we're not). This was clear and designed so you could easily follow along. Thank you, Nicole. Superb!
Best photoshop video ever, straight to the point and didnt tell a backstory on how you got into graphic design. I subscribed without looking at another video, this one sold me!
so well explained! I love the fact you zoom in to show each icon and steps, lots of other video just said do this and do that without show it clearly, always have to stop and rewind back to see exactly what they are doing, but your video zoomed in with enlarged icon, so easy to follow! big thank you!
The thing about photoshop is there's so many ways to get what you want done. I knew about clipping mask but I've never associated that function with this task. Thank you for sharing.
I googled "how to round corners on an image in photoshop." None of the other solutions in search results worked for me, which included creating vector masks. This was simple and straight to the point and worked first try. Thank you!
Thank you... The best part of it was not the excellent tip and technique but the fact that you did not mention who invented Photoshop and the reason rounded corners exist in nature :D Most videos and bogs these days spend 90% of the video or 10000 pages of text on some fluff. Yours was a master class in simplicity and effectiveness!
This is all great and all but how do you do this with an inverted corner on one of the corners. It used to be so easy in the older versions of Photoshop. Please help.
Thank you very much. You described the process perfectly and concisely. I recommended your video to a friend. This is the most helpful video for how to do this. Other videos just didn't work with my latest version of PS software. Thank you again.
Hello thank you for your video It really is very informative. Unfortunately I'm following the steps when I go to clip the layers together it does show the rounded along with the edges of the rectangle but it doesn't show that checker box background in the corners don't understand what I'm doing wrong but when I go to save it and then open the file again it doesn't open up with rounded edges like the finished product
It sounds like you might have a background (or other) layer at the bottom, which is fine but you won't see the trasparency behind it (checkerboard) unless you delete it. Look to see if you have a layer at the bottom (below the rectangle) and delete it (highight the layer and press the Delete or Backspace button). Then, when you save the file as a png, it will be transparent.
Very helpful! Thank you. I do need to to a business card with round corners, do I use the same methode in Photoshop or do I just use InDesgn and put a round corner frame around my document? Thank you in advance
It is possible! First create the shape using the *Shape tool* , and then make sure the layer is selected and go to *Layer > New > Convert to Frame* . You won't be able to edit the corners afterwards but you can make the frame any size you want this way.
I'm doing a project that requires my finished product to be printed out since it's gonna be made into a book, and i was wondering if saving it as a PNG instead of PDF (since that was te recommend format) would mess up the printing process? I'm trying to just format my pages and send it to my editor for printing.. is this possible if i save it as a PNG?
Book formats usually are in PDF when you upload them to print, but it depends on what you are using to print it. FWIW I use PNG files in my printed books often and they turn out just fine. I would consult with the printer to make sure since they are all a little bit different.
When I export following your instructions, the png file is not exporting with the transparency, but rather has a dark grey background, which of course is not functioning as a transparent background.
If you open the PNG in Photoshop, does it show the transparency? If not, and you are trying to upload it to a website, it could be that the site does not accept transparent PNG files.
Incredible... My photo disappears every time I want to insert it into the rectangle (clip the photo to the rectangle)... I end up with a transparent background with a rectangle with rounded corners and nothing else ... What to do in this case Nicole? thanks in advance
Check the rectangle layer with the shape tool active and make sure it has a solid fill on the inside in the options bar (and that it’s not set to empty). You might also want to check the “fill” setting in the layers panel and make sure it’s at 100%.
In the 2024 version of Photoshop, to create a clipping mask, you should right-click on the image and select "Create Clipping Mask" (or the shortcut Option+Command+G on Mac) from the drop-down menu. Holding down the 'Option' or 'Alt' key will not work for this action.
Your methods will work. However, holding the Opt (Mac) or Alt (Win) key also still works in Ps 2024 when you hover the cursor in-between the layers you want to clip.
@@nicolesy You are right! I just realized my mistake. I wasn't doing it correctly. It works when I drag and drop "in-between" the layers. Previously, I mistakenly dragged the image layer directly onto the rectangle layer, which caused a duplicate 🙃.
@@societycrumbles It's normal for it to create a new layer when making a rectangle shape (or any shape). Try going to View > Extras and make sure it's checked. If it's unchecked then the points will not show.
@@nicolesy I have the same issue, and even with using the tool (and not switching tools) the dots to round the edges of the shape dont seem to appear by default?
It occured to me that you might not have it set to "Shape" in the options bar. Look for the drop-down at the top-left (to the left of the "FIll" box) and set it to "Shape". If it's set to something else you probably won't get the dots or handles that you see in the video.
If you are referring to the indicators that you would use to create the rounded corners, first you will want to make sure that you have the same version (or newer) of Photoshop that is shown in the videos. You may also need to go to View > Extras and make sure that it is checked to show those circle indicators.

The little dots/circles in the corners are missing for some reason! How to show them please? I'm using Photopea
Photopea and Photoshop are different apps, and this is a Photoshop tutorial.
I don'ts get the inner curve dot in my rectangle, help
Thanks for the video, Is it not possible to do the same using the frame tool?

Mine doesnt give me those circles to let me change shape. It makes a flat block with no ability to modify it.
can i add a background to the image? like simple a plane black background
Yep! One way is to add a Color Fill Layer (), set it to black, and put it at the bottom of the Layers panel.

This used to be a lot easier using a selection border radius.

When I draw the rectangle it won't let me change the size / modify it, there are no dots that let you do that, what am I doing wrong?
Make sure you are still in the rectangle tool (press U). It won't let you modify the original shape if you switch tools.
@@nicolesy Did that and there are still no points / dots showing and won't let me modify. It also creates a new layer when I make a shape.

I’ve never been told that before! 😄
the little circles never show up
rectangle tool and change to path not shape
It's a shame this only works with the Rectangle shape.
Not working
Way too long video for such simple action :) I was looking for 20-30s long video with instruction, without whole introduction etc...
Try searching TH-cam shorts instead. Most actual videos are not going to be only 30 seconds long.
Not work with the 2023 version
Yes, it works with the 2023 version. That's what I show in this video.
Ok my curser isn’t changing 🥲
You are an amazing teacher. Thank you!
Thanks. Very easy to follow.
Thank you!
not working
Thank you :)
