    In the late 1880's a young woman reporter by the name of Nellie Bly pretended to be mentally ill and was admitted to Bellevue Hospital infamous mad house. 10 days later she emerged with an astounding report on the conditions and practices she discovered there. That was just one of her many accomplishments in her long career as a reporter and adventurer.

    This undercover psych ward investigation is a decent story. The investigator and the doctor both prove the point and i like how the doctor agrees not to kill the investigator and I like how the investigator agrees not to expose the doctor and the works of the asylum mainly, if the doctor kills the investigator then the doctor is crazy so instead the doctor discharges the investigator and the investigator agrees not to shut down the entire psych ward because mainly, “the psych ward contains a lot of ill and very bad people which really no investigator should let out.” Which the investigator agrees and gives the phone.
    Which the story is badass

      No One has the Right to hurt Anyone. Do Not Each and Every one of us on Earth Want to be Treated with Love and Respect whether we Are Sane OR insane. That crazy Doctor was Doing Nothing Short of Experimenting with The Human Brain. Is He God that he should judge A Person Good or Bad and Then Decide what he Chooses to do with Them ?????? Those patients Needed Someone to Care for Them, To Treat them Like A Human Being. No one wants to be Looked Down upon especially if they Have A Physical or Mental Condition that They have No Control over. I Didn't hear of All Murderers or Rapists or Gangsters ( All Bad People) becoming Mentally I'll and Winding up in A Mental institution but Yet that Quack of A Doctor would Say that Their Mental illness is Their Own Fault. Yeah I guess they All just Decided one Day to become Bad with the Knowledge that They would Wind up eventually Going Crazy because of Their Bad Deeds and being institutionalized. That Doctor is More of A Mental Patient Than Those that Live in the Facility.

    When was in Nursing, I did a placement in a Mental Ward for Four months. If people understood what the majority of the patients did before they entered the Ward, you'd be sick to your stomachs. It's easy for so many to condemn the care of patients when you don't have to do the job. Grant it, there are some institutions that are deplorable, and I agree, that's wrong to expect people to live that way; but just to have Institutions available is safe for both the public and the patients. Canada has closed the majority of it's Institutions, and that makes me extremely uneasy. Some people should be locked away for forever because of the Evil that lives within them.

    Hm. First of all, love the nod towards Nellie Bly.
    But second, I kind of feel disheartened by this story. Because honestly, this viewpoint isn't that farfetched, even among health professionals, and I think demonizing disorders and addiction makes recovery and rehabilitation slower to progress than otherwise possible.
    I am diagnosed with Borderline PD, for example, and for decades it was considered an untreatable disorder with patients even experienced providers would refuse to treat. It took a woman named Marsha Linehan creating an entirely new form of therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, for that outlook to change, and even now it's still rather taboo. It isn't uncommon for doctors to give alternative diagnoses to patients just to ensure their insurance will cover treatment options. Dr. Linehan herself opened up only recently about her own BPD diagnosis, which she was quiet about in fear of discrediting her work among professionals. Luckily, the research and trials have borne out DBT's efficacy in both short and long-term studies, and overtime it's come to be accepted that people with BPD are not inherently evil, just extremely sensitive to emotional stimuli and often raised in unstable or invalidating environments. They are capable of bad or abusive behavior, but people without BPD are as well. However, by taking the time to find a mode of treatment tailored to their circumstances, many lead fulfilling, meaningful lives.
    Many of the issues we see in addicts, repeat offenders, and people with unsavoury personalities can often be tied to circumstances or zip code. We release inmates without a safety net in place to support them and a permanent black mark on their records that prevent them from getting most jobs, then act shocked when they resort to criminal activities in order to get by. We run addicts through a 60 day detox, then boot them out, often with gratuitous debt and no job or long term therapy to support them, and of course they turn back to their comfort and crutch. This fictional doctor mentioned numerous times the financial bribes the patients used to shirk criminal justice, but isn't that more reflective of the justice system than the patients who probably have addiction problems or personality disorders (or both)? Why not blame the system that allows such bribes to go through, rather than enforce treatment or justice? If a woman castrates her husband because she fears he's cheating on her, I'd say psychiatric help is actually the better solution. Because obviously, someone needs to help her work out why she was so insecure, and why she thought violence against another was the appropriate solution. Maybe get her on some medication to manage moods and anxiety. Better to address the issues people have and try to rehabilitate them into society than to lobotomize them.
    ANYWAY. This is obviously an area I'm very passionate about. I see mental health demonized so often in both fiction and real life, and it grinds my gears. Didn't mean to write an essay about it though, lol. Great narration, as per usual! And thanks for coming to my TED talk~

      You make really good, valid points. I have chronic OCD and agoraphobia, and it’s so disheartening how often these are the butt of jokes and ridicule in movies and tv. It takes generations of understanding to help ameliorate the effects of prejudice and ignorance. Edit: great narration though, I agree!

    • @teacoon6399
      @teacoon6399 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would argue that there are some cases where people cannot be trusted in society again though and for others, certainly not without restrictions. For example -- a woman who neglects and kills her children like the case of the Mother who did so in order to garner attention for herself. I believe that she should've been allowed to rejoin society BUT under the circumstance that she has her tubes tied.
      When it comes to harm being done to another person that resulted in life-long mutilation or emotional bereavement...those topics are more difficult because you also have to keep the victim in mind. The woman who lost her husband and children in a car crash are never going to get them back, the husband who was castrated because of his wife's paranoia is now forever physically mutilated and unable to enjoy sex on top of emotional scarring. It's a very muddy subject.
      I have a friend whose mother sold him out for drug money, his natural response for pedophiles would be chemical castration if not outright death because as an affected party he believes they cannot get better nor do they deserve to due to their lack of self control that in return resulted in others with life long distrust and trauma.

      @@teacoon6399 wouldn’t he be right for the most part though? If they willingly no longer put it into practice is that the same as being rehabilitated?

    A villain like Dr. Wasserman has methods that sound appealing. Imagine no longer needing to subject people to the death penalty or life imprisonment, you can just give them an implant that cures their evil tendencies. However to take away someone's own mind, to strip away their free will? Execution is far more merciful.
