I did not expect to like prayer plants or alocasias because everyone says they are difficult. Prayer plants and alocasias are so easy to propagate and are so rewarding. I also did not expect to dislike n’joy pothos - and vining pothos in general.
I have fallen in love with silver sword like a year ago and got a little one but this guy just does not want to size up :( the big mature ones are the prettiest! :D
Great video, Fern. How about making the opposite video as well: "Plants you expected to get crazy in love with and then they were just fine or even just meh" Or how about this video: "plants you're keeping yourself from liking too much because you're afraid it'll hurt you/leave you" (e.g. pest prone plants, Karen-plants, or suicidal plants) My plants that I bought without expecting to get crazy about are: 1. Ctenanthe burle-marxii - I saw all the plant TH-camrs talking about it and I picked it up thinking let's see what the fuss is about, and I love love love those beautiful leaves. 2. Thaumatophyllum selloum gold - I bought a baby plant just because it's lime coloured and now I think it's my favourable plant - beautiful colour, cool leaf shapes and it grows fast too, the whole package
Mine is actually my philodendron silver sword. I didn’t have any interest in them at first when they were really popular last year but I kept seeing yours and I love that color so I found one that was really cheap and bought it. Now mine is fully mature it has bloomed twice and it’s one of my favorite largest most mature plants. I didn’t expect a plant that I bought on a whim to become one of my favorites lol
I fell in love with my Silver Sword once I changed its location in my home and its cover pot. And after seeing this video of your beautiful Dragon Scale, I just bought one this morning
The succulent one we call starfish plant in Texas and I have several different varieties that all bloomed last summer. I did not really notice the smell but they literally attracted flies when they bloomed. So it must have been bad. I have one that is massive in size. About 18” tall and 24” wide. And her branches are about 2” in diameter!
Silver Sword was my number one wish plant at the beginning when I fitlrst started collecting.... I fell out of love with it somehow. It grew very weird and became so top heavy and became annoying. I chopped it up and I'm probably going to just give the cuttings away because it takes up sooo much room and I have no idea where I would put it anymore.
Yes I totally agree the philodendron silver sword is gorgeous i am really into the silvery colour plants these days. I had a baby cutting of this sadly didn’t do well. The Scindapsus Moonlight Treubii you should check it out and the Krohniana Super silver. Wow your Philodendron Painted Lady growing so well i love the red stems and the different colour of the leaves. Just wondering plants with aerial roots do they only grow well on some sort of climbing items? I would rather put them on a trellis but I understand there aerial roots need to pierce into something. That is why I don’t have plants with huge aerial roots.
I bought a trailing jade and a hoya compacta because of your beautiful plants. Now I’m super excited because I am expecting a painted lady cutting any day now! Thanks so much for the hard work you pit into producing content for your viewers!
My favorite, on my wishlist for over a year, is my philodendron rugosum. It’s got thick textured leaves that are a solid green. I love how hearty it is, that it’s a philodendron, and so easy to care for. I don’t ever hear anyone talking about it either. I love all my plants tho. They all have a story and are special to me. Lol
@@jennifermurphy8750 I have it in my sunroom which is open to the front room/kitchen. It is about 6 ft from a west facing window, there is a humidifier in the sunroom set at 50% for the winter. That room is colder than the rest of the house- probably 60-65 degrees F. But it seems to do well in those conditions. I water it about every 3-4 weeks. I water everything with really diluted fish emulsion every time. It’s just easier since different plants are watered different weeks to give every plant a little fertilizer each watering. I just love how thick and rough the leaves are and how easy going it is.
I loved this video idea!! 🥰 Sting of turtles is one I have been just blown away by! I have never heard anyone talk about how the new leaves come in deep purple and SOFT like velvet 😍 Plus I recently noticed the mature leaves are translucent!! I dont think you can tell in photos but if you look super close, you can actually see through the leaf to the veins on the bottom 🤯
@@M_SC oh it looked like that when I got it from the box store, ill have to check other specimens 🤔 Definitely not getting too much in my home. I love it though!
There’s been a lot of plants that I’m like “ew those are ugly” but when I see them in person I’m like that video that says “you’re comin home with me” 😂 but one that I had absolutely NO interest in was a Hoya compacta, but one day someone had pointed out it looked like this specific pasta noodle and as a pasta lover I loved that and I think I started to like it ever since 😂 so I finally just got one today!
I’m with you! I told my partner a year ago if I got a compacta then he would know I was off the plant deep end cause at the time I really didn’t want one ( I got one last month)
Always enjoy your confidence in your collection. You are so refreshing. I would love to have a sliver sword. It is on my wishlist. We never get tired of your painted lady that is simply perfection. I bought one from planternia but another TH-camr looked it up and found out it was a Calvin’s gold super bummed. Love me some philodendrons.😍
Also I agree on Ctenanthe being easier than Calathea! Some people misname them as Calathea and I think it does them a disservice. I have a Ctenanthe Setosa and it was one of my first houseplants ever, it had spidermites so some of the leaves are a bit damaged but she is HUGE. She's a total stunner of a bush and she just keeps growing new little spikes constantly, so beautiful!
Fern I have that succulent cactus you have. I have had it around on my patio for years. The blooms get pretty large. They look fuzzy With dark maroon stripes. They remind me of the shape of a starfish. Very unique. I have another type of succulent cactus that trails like in a hanging basket. Star shaped blooms very small plain maroon. It won't Pick you . It just grows long. ALL the succulent cacti that I have seen have star shaped flowers. I was going to mention the cactus you have trails also looks great when they go off the edge of a pot or hanging basket. It might start if you move your hitchhiker out of that pot. She looks crowded. Thus the tall piece in the middle. I do enjoy your sharing about your plants and such. Thank you. Lynda
with stapelia, it is normal to have those tips yellow. mine flowered las summer.. and it doesn't smell strong, if you don't put your nose into it you don't feel it.. .. but! it attracts flies.. and they lay their eggs in the center of flower... sorry :( but it is normal, that's how the flowers get fertilized.
Also can I express how much I appreciate your videos? Lately I’ve been in a depressive slump (happens often) and your videos really inspire me and reinvigorate my love for my plants on the days I feel numb to everything. I also appreciate that you’re always honest and genuine and your plant experience really helps me for my own! I don’t have hardly any plants friends 😭😭😭 so your videos really fill that void lol. I’d love to send you a cutting of something from my collection one day!
a plant i unexoectedyl fell in love with was my purple passion plant. don't get me wrong, i hate this plant on its own, but when placed with other plants in an arrangement it boosts their beauty! and it's vocal when the soil is too dry (like a fittonia not like a fiddle leaf fig) so i use it to gauge when i need to water
I knew that obliqua would be part of this list. It’s doing so good! I definitely bought my silver sword because of yours 😆 I just can’t get over how good that buzz cut looks on you 🥰
I found out about the silver sword because of you and it has become one of my favourite plants ever!! I have a really pretty one that is already pretty mature!! I love the color and leaf shape!!
I’ve always wondered is the painted lady was one of those you have to see in person because honestly, I just don’t get it from images. Admittedly, the pink petioles are beautiful on film. But the leaves look unwell to me. I’ve still never seen a big one in person. But I imagine it must be more beautiful in real life based on how much people seem to love theirs
You've low key inspired my love and acquirement of certain plants. Trailing jade, silver sword, painted lady (2nd one on the way!), silver band maranta, etc ♡♡♡
Ok, Fern, you finally talked me into it. I watch you talk about your painted lady every chance I get, and I finally ordered one today. Lovelovelove her! So excited to have one in my home too 😀
You’re the reason I bought a silver sword! I had never seen or heard of it until I saw you mention yours, but when I saw it I immediately fell in love ESPECIALLY after hearing what it was called ⚔️⚔️⚔️ I can’t wait for it to get here, thank you for introducing me to my new favorite plant!
I am not a fan of plants that vine.... I however got 2 different types of syngonium... don't know the varieties, but one has green and white leaves and the other is green and pink leaves.... and I fell in love when they started to flourish.... the leaves are so beautiful 😍
I always get so excited whenever you talk about your Painted Lady. That was my very first “rare” plant purchase maybe four years ago and I am still absolutely in love with them to this day; I will always have one! I’m hoping you bringing her up will encourage more people to buy them!
The plants that shocked me and I didn't expect to love are my donkey tail succulent, string of tears, and my starfish sansevieria. My silver sword is a baby plant and currently growing it's 2nd leaf and this year my goal is to get a painted lady 🤗🤗🤗.
The first would be my croton, I know most people hate them and so did I. My fiancé got me a tiny one while we were at a nursery because he liked the color. It grew a tone and is actually in bloom right now. The second is my scindapsus moonlight, a seller sent me one instead of a micans that I ordered(he sent me the micans after and told me to keep the moonlight). I too fell in love with the silver.
@@debs_boho_jungle because they are very demanding about sunlight and heat probably… here in Indonesia they are landscaping plant and grown under full sun. So beautiful colors indeed.
I agree with the never-never plant! I bought mine in super rough shape from a big box store and it's big and lovely now! I don't have a painted lady but 👀
I am totally obsessed with the Philodendron Painted lady!! Sad story! I bought cuttings of this plant 3 times from Etsy and they died every time!! I was so shook! because they are so expensive. Needless to say I'm scared of getting anymore. I love it so much though. Yours is gorgeous! I wish I got one to grow like that.
Hey Fern The first ever Silver Sword I saw was yours and instantly fell in love with this plant, I think it is so stunning, like you I love silver leaves, I would love to have this plant one day in my collection. The Painted Lady on the other hand was not a great fan of until I saw yours and again fell in love with this plant and would love to have this in my collection too. Have not got a stapelia is as yet but absolutely love them I am a cactus and succulent head Lol
I also have a Stapelia grandiflora, and I’m also obsessed! I got a cutting about the same time as you did I think, and it grows so well, even in pretty low light… just waiting for that stinky flower 😬😂
I didn't expect to love hoyas. I thought they were ugly. Then I discovered dischidia ovata and bought a little starter plant, and then I bought a baby hoya wayetii at a local nursery, and that was that. I have spent way too much money on them lol. I also didn't care for painted lady until seeing close ups of the leaves. Now i am hoping my little one someday looks as nice as yours!
Your painted lady is truly mesmerizing! I cannot wait to grow mine out like yours. I think the plant that has surprised me the most in my own collection would be my philodendron Brazil because it’s such a simple plant but it’s been my favorite since day 1. it was the first house plant I bought including a sansevieria laurentii which I still have the both☺️including five or six more pots of of the Brazil that I’ve propagated over the years! It’s my favorite plant to share with friends🥰
I have a Stapelia gigantea, along with two other carrion plants. All three have been UBER easy to grow and I adore them. My other two are Orbea schweinfurthii and Huernia hystrix. The other two aren't soft like the Stapelia, but they look super cool. 💚
I have the Stapelia Grandiflora. Mine was also grown from a single arm and now it looks like an octopus. Mine lives outside in Summer and got buds this year, but I had to bring it inside due to an early frost and it had a tantrum and dropped them all.
Plants I freaking love but never really expected to: asparagus setaceus, calathea white fusion (thought it was going to be WAY more difficult than it is), mimosa sensitive plant,. Begonia jovian (also thought it was going to be more difficult than it is)
I am loving the same!! And... yesterday I was with my daughter Alicia, also on your channel, and we saw the succulent you mentioned! And we love it!! Soo much!! 🪴🙌💗😊 Ps.. bear paw 🐾 is another one of our favorites too!! 💗🙌🪴
I have a stapelia divaricata, it's not fuzzy but it gets these light pink starfish looking blooms and I'm so in love with it ♥️ Great video as always fern 🌿
you should do it tbh, it's so fun watching your hair grow back! it's like getting a new hairstyle every two weeks. i shaved my hair on april 1st 2020 and i wanna do it again tbh
I ordered a stapelia from eBay. It got held up in the Xmas Post for 10 days and when it arrived it was in perfect condition like nothing had happened. So ordered another it was in the post 2 days and was a shrivel mess which didn't make it. But the one that was missing has a tiny off shoot growing its doing so well even in winter. It's under a light but still it's great. Can't wait for it to flower. I got a random silvery ferny thing from wilko a UK shop. And I did love it big time. But then as its grown and I know its a blue star fern I love it so much more its huge and I feel like I'm doing everything wrong and it's thriving. And my pony tail palm. Which was cute vut I liked is as it was odd. But now it's bigger I love it so much now Great idea for a video
I have been dying to get a cutting of the Ctenanthe Lubbersiana !! I can only find huuuuge plants 😂😂😂 And we will never get tired of seeing your beautiful Painted Lady, QUEEN 🤍🤤💚🧡
I have a whole pot of that stapelia :) it’s sun stressed and it’s bloomed once. I also hve like 80 seedlings super cute. I wish I was on mainland so I could share
I really like that Monsteria Dubai I really love the shingling plants. Another super pretty plant that shingles is a Scindapsus snake scale. Your Painted Lady looks amazing.
Hi again Fern! I thought for sure the first plant was going to be your El Choco Red. 😄 I never get tired of you showing off that one! I enjoyed seeing the ones in this video though. 💛
Hey Fern! Good day! Great video. I'm in love with my Staplilia that I acquired this past Fall. Yours is so cute. I concur its super easy and thrives on light and neglect...lol I'm actually doing a swap this morn which includes a Silver Sword and I'm stoked! Your plants look so beautiful, and I always love your genuine love and enthusiasm. Wishing you a great day, restful week end and good mental health( cause I know I'm strugglin!) Til the next one! 🥰✌🏾🐕
Epipremnum, hoya (somehow hahah), hedera helix, sansevieria (there is one sansevieria that looks as if it was dead!) I loved silver sward although I keep killing philodendrons...
Lovely plants 🥰 For me it's my monstera siltepecana. Gifted to me as a free cutting. Then the tiny guy got thrips 😭 but pulled through and gave me a new leaf right away! Also syngonium frosted heart 💙 I bought it because it looked nice, haven't realised it was going to be such an awesome plant 💚
I have a few stapilia and hernia plants. I need to remember to water them more here living in the desert SW as they really don’t like to go dry here. But I only have had one stinking bloom so far but I am looking forward to maybe having them bloom this spring
I got mine in a two inch pot off Etsy from a shop called wishlistplant! Shipped well and fast. It’s done wonderful for me so far and I’ve had it for a few months now☺️
I used to hate all sansevieria, they seemed so boring and all variations looked the same and just ugh, no thank you. And then I found this tiny whalefin with a single leaf and I just fell in love, it looked so silly and I really vibe with silly and then I didn't want it to be lonely so long story short I have like 7 different snakeplants now... 😅
Totally the Painted lady for me. I got a baby two leaf cutting two weeks ago. And it is absolutely beautiful and growing like crazy. But I had no real interest in it before I traded for it.
I just bought a painted lady! I never thought much of them but then I saw a picture of yours on your instagram and that's the reason I bought one yesterday baha so thank you because I love it so much 😂🥰💕💕
Sorry Fern accidentally sent message without finishing off. What am I like. Lol I loved the rest of your plants that you showed in this vid too. Thanks for video really enjoyed. Tc Xx
I love my Dubai a lot too. I’m excited to see it grow into a mature plant again it came mature but then when it started putting out leaves for me they aren’t mature
Not gonna lie, I really hated the Obliqua UNTIL I saw how yours was growing out - so cute! I would absolutely consider getting one now if I happened upon a reasonably priced one 😊 And the lubersiana was just added to my wishlist, I picked up both a c. setosa and a burle-marxii at Trader Joe’s last month and they’re flourishinggggg in my bathroom 😂 Thanks for the surprise loves video! ♥️
i had an addiction to hastatums tbh. at one point i had like 10 😭 i gave away/traded the rest tho so there's that, i now have 2 that aren't doing too well so i might trade them and then buy another one or let my little node cuttings grow and just not touch them lol. i am tempted to buy a big one from my local plant store, but it's flowering so im worried about that nutrient wise....
@@leas.8603 Flowers steal a lot of energy from the rest of the plants, so the leaves won’t get as much nutrients as the plant is using much of its energy to bloom
Love love Silver Sword but that plant hates me I've killed 2 somehow I can grow any other philo but not it and I just adore it now painted Lady I adore too and have one that's none stop grown for me in a grow box since I moved and I don't do much for it but today she is coming out of the box and into one of the big tents I hope she gets hugeee like yours cause it's such a under rated plant ! I would love to get one of those succulents that sounds amazing soft & fuzzy ! Oh your never never plant is beautiful I have one fingers crossed I'm rehabbing I saved it from the grocery store she had spidermites so bad and I couldn't leave her there to die! I love my obliqua I have 2 such amazing plants !!
I haven't repotted mine yet - it's still in the nursery pot it arrived in. But I will be potting into my regular potting mixture this spring/summer (coco coir, orchid bark, perlite, & pumice)
Hi Fern, love your faves too especially the obliqua and dubia. Definitely on my wish list. I’m looking at the clear planter your painted lady is in. I couldn’t find any taller than 5 inches on Amazon. Can you share please where you got them?

@@debs_boho_jungle because they are very demanding about sunlight and heat probably… here in Indonesia they are landscaping plant and grown under full sun. So beautiful colors indeed.
I agree with the never-never plant! I bought mine in super rough shape from a big box store and it's big and lovely now! I don't have a painted lady but 👀
They are very happy plants,
Less is more sometimes!!!
💚🪴🌱🌵
Thank you for your video. You always share valuable information on growing plants.
I just yesterday had to chop my painted lady because she put grew my cabinet. Can’t wait to have multiple plants
Hey Fern
The first ever Silver Sword I saw was yours and instantly fell in love with this plant, I think it is so stunning, like you I love silver leaves, I would love to have this plant one day in my collection.
How I feel about my strawberry begonia and beetle peperomia 💚🌿
I didn't expect to love hoyas. I thought they were ugly. Then I discovered dischidia ovata and bought a little starter plant, and then I bought a baby hoya wayetii at a local nursery, and that was that. I have spent way too much money on them lol. I also didn't care for painted lady until seeing close ups of the leaves. Now i am hoping my little one someday looks as nice as yours!
My silver sword is definitely one of my favorites as well, it's maturing and the leaves are so pretty 👌.
It’s my favorite plant to share with friends🥰
ahhh so true about the Brazil! they are so beautiful 💚
I have a Stapelia gigantea, along with two other carrion plants. All three have been UBER easy to grow and I adore them. My other two are Orbea schweinfurthii and Huernia hystrix. The other two aren't soft like the Stapelia, but they look super cool. 💚
I didnt expect to fall in love with a whole peperomias in general!
Begonia jovian (also thought it was going to be more difficult than it is)
I have the stapelia and it bloomed for me last summer! The blooms die pretty quick but they are beautiful and HUGE!!! Super cool plant I love mine
I am loving the same!! And... yesterday I was with my daughter Alicia, also on your channel, and we saw the succulent you mentioned! And we love it!! Soo much!! 🪴🙌💗😊 Ps.. bear paw 🐾 is another one of our favorites too!! 💗🙌🪴
Love seeing the progress on your plants! 💚
Thank you! 😊 I'm glad because I love sharing it haha :)
I have a stapelia divaricata, it's not fuzzy but it gets these light pink starfish looking blooms and I'm so in love with it ♥️
Great video as always fern 🌿
Can't get over your look rn!! So inspired to buzz my head! It's on my bucket list ☺️
Fern inspired me and I went for it! You should definitely do it if you are thinking about it 😊
Thank youuuu! definitely recommend doing at least once
you should do it tbh, it's so fun watching your hair grow back! it's like getting a new hairstyle every two weeks. i shaved my hair on april 1st 2020 and i wanna do it again tbh
But now it's bigger I love it so much now
Great idea for a video
I have been dying to get a cutting of the Ctenanthe Lubbersiana !! I can only find huuuuge plants 😂😂😂 And we will never get tired of seeing your beautiful Painted Lady, QUEEN 🤍🤤💚🧡
Also I will be living vicariously through you and your beautiful obliqua 😍😍😍
I love my silver sword… it’s on the struggle bus… but that color 🥰
🖤🖤
I have a whole pot of that stapelia :) it’s sun stressed and it’s bloomed once. I also hve like 80 seedlings super cute. I wish I was on mainland so I could share
My painted lady was small and has started to shoot up growth. I don’t like the naked trunk thinking of chopping.
I concur its super easy and thrives on light and neglect...lol
I'm actually doing a swap this morn which includes a Silver Sword and I'm stoked! Your plants look so beautiful, and I always love your genuine love and enthusiasm. Wishing you a great day, restful week end and good mental health( cause I know I'm strugglin!) Til the next one! 🥰✌🏾🐕
Hey Fern, maybe your Painted Lady is an orange Marmelade ^^. Its a little bit different to Painted Lady.
👀
Epipremnum, hoya (somehow hahah), hedera helix, sansevieria (there is one sansevieria that looks as if it was dead!)
I loved silver sward although I keep killing philodendrons...
I have a Stepelia Gigantea, and it’s just flowered for me. It’s so stunning 🤩
I love the Philo Hastatum too. I started with a small one and just got a big pot of it.
I'll be getting that silver glory string of hearts for sure! It's so cute!
I got mine in a two inch pot off Etsy from a shop called wishlistplant! Shipped well and fast. It’s done wonderful for me so far and I’ve had it for a few months now☺️
yes very cute! you'll love it I'm sure 🖤
I can see why you'd love these. I am on the look out for a silver glory this year.
I love stapelia grandiflora too! I saw a HUGE one at a nursery yesterday- like the stems were thicc. Excited to see it keep growing :’)
Oh how cool!!
I love your energy. I just vibe so hard and I know it’s my Aries-Libra thing, but I also love Taurus peoples so the vibes here are immaculate💞
😃😃🥰🥰🥰 thank you!
Trailing plants are my faaaavorrriiteeee
Totally the Painted lady for me. I got a baby two leaf cutting two weeks ago. And it is absolutely beautiful and growing like crazy. But I had no real interest in it before I traded for it.
I loved your video. I always learn something new by watching your videos!
I just bought a painted lady! I never thought much of them but then I saw a picture of yours on your instagram and that's the reason I bought one yesterday baha so thank you because I love it so much 😂🥰💕💕
hahah youre so welcome! glad you got one too 💘
Great video Fern, love seeing your collection progress every time you do a fav video! What is the plastic thing you are using to make your moss poles?
Sorry Fern accidentally sent message without finishing off.
What am I like. Lol
I loved the rest of your plants that you showed in this vid too.
Thanks for video really enjoyed. Tc Xx
Thanks!
I love my Dubai a lot too. I’m excited to see it grow into a mature plant again it came mature but then when it started putting out leaves for me they aren’t mature
Not gonna lie, I really hated the Obliqua UNTIL I saw how yours was growing out - so cute! I would absolutely consider getting one now if I happened upon a reasonably priced one 😊
And the lubersiana was just added to my wishlist, I picked up both a c. setosa and a burle-marxii at Trader Joe’s last month and they’re flourishinggggg in my bathroom 😂
Thanks for the surprise loves video! ♥️
ahhh yes - ctenanthe are so underrated, glad to hear you love them too!
I wasn't expecting to love peperomia so much!!!
I didn’t happen to like my ficus elastica burgundy but I have just started liking it.
i had an addiction to hastatums tbh. at one point i had like 10 😭 i gave away/traded the rest tho so there's that, i now have 2 that aren't doing too well so i might trade them and then buy another one or let my little node cuttings grow and just not touch them lol. i am tempted to buy a big one from my local plant store, but it's flowering so im worried about that nutrient wise....
Just wondering what do you mean by "nutrient wise"?
@@leas.8603 Flowers steal a lot of energy from the rest of the plants, so the leaves won’t get as much nutrients as the plant is using much of its energy to bloom
@@XxPRLoverxX Thanks a lot for your answer :)
I would love to get a shingling plant like that, but I worry about mealy bugs, etc hiding behind all the leaves. Do you have any issues of that?
I know this is not the point but your hair is looking SO CUTE 🤩 and your painted lady is so majestic omg!!
wow! 🥰do you know how many plants you currently have?!
I recently got an oblique from a friend and I'm unsure what soil mix I should use. What's your soil mix for your oblique?
I haven't repotted mine yet - it's still in the nursery pot it arrived in. But I will be potting into my regular potting mixture this spring/summer (coco coir, orchid bark, perlite, & pumice)
Hi Fern, love your faves too especially the obliqua and dubia. Definitely on my wish list.
I’m looking at the clear planter your painted lady is in. I couldn’t find any taller than 5 inches on Amazon. Can you share please where you got them?
Hey! I actually found them at a local plant shop here, but perhaps an orchid supply website would have more size options? I'd try that!
I got my silver sword because of you and I love her!!
loved the vid! have you ever thought about putting osmocote in the moss pole?
I'll never get tired of that painted lady
Not a huge fan of the silver sword, but that painted lady is amazing, definitely a wish list plant 😍😍😍
yassss 👏 an option for everyone haha
