  • A pretty late review for Tears of the Kingdom! But nonetheless, here it is! Feel free to disagree with my opinions of course!
Disclaimer 1: I used some footage from other TH-cam channels to fill in spots I couldn't record myself, such as dungeons and whatnot because I didn't think to record while just playing through the game. Some footage is recorded by me, however, but I also used a lot of footage from other channels. You can find these channels at the end of the video, OR a little ways down in the description.
Disclaimer 2: I do not own Tears of the Kingdom, nor do I claim to, and some footage was not captured by me. This video is for entertainment, and to simply get my opinion out there.

Holy crap this took way longer to edit than I thought. Don't take my opinion so seriously, it holds no more weight than anyone else's! I'm always a little nervous to put my opinion out there, just know I hold nothing against you if you disagree with anything! This video is just for fun and I did enjoy making it but good lord, it sure is long... Next time I do a review I'm gonna try to keep it under 20 minutes because editing this burned me out >_<
Check out my second channel: www.youtube.com/@LinksterGames2 I uploaded two videos, one is me playing BotW and giving some thoughts on it (but mostly just rambling), and the other is me making two tier lists, a TotK character tier list and an all Zelda games tier list, so check those out if that sounds interesting!
Thanks for watching! Gameplay videos will resume soon, I'll be playing Twilight Princess next. Maybe that'll come out this week but maybe next week because I'm a little burnt out on editing and want to relax for a few days probably. Who knew making subtitles was so time consuming... Anyway, thanks for watching, I appreciate it :D

Link is a psychopath with no emotion or reaction to anything, He runs around killing things and in the old school days breaking into homes smashing up pots and stealing from treasure chests. He's a legit psycho.

It’s odd to me that Impa is the only character that learns that Zelda is a dragon, talks about finding a way to reverse it and then it goes nowhere. It feels like that was meant to be a main quest line that got cut

I ended up doing 120 shrines and the all 120 lightroots. I know there are more shrines in the sky and some of the surface I didnt do yet but I similarly didnt have the motivation to do them all. I actually did the same thing on listening to podcasts when I decided I was gonna clear out the lightroots. No real reward was pretty damn disappointing.
The dungeons were okay but still a half-step compared to the traditional dungeons. The Light temple was definitely the closest the traditional dungeons. Cant really say more than that.
Recall was pretty broken when doing the shrines for me. Building bridges and manipulating them with recall over gaps lets you skip so many of them. Recall has a ridiculous reach too so it was nice when retrieving items that fell off a cliff lol.
Regarding Link in the story: I get that Link is meant to be stoic blank slate but it doesnt mean that he cant show any emotion. They were capable of doing it in Skyward Sword and especially games featuring Toon Link. If Link just shed a tear once or twice and had a stronger reaction to the ending it would have been significantly better.
Overall I really liked the experimentation of BotW and TotK though I would certainly prefer have a more traditional Zelda game next.I dont see them doing it after these games success but maybe a Wind Waker 2 with more exploration but still with classic dungeons and a story focus could be cool. We shall see.
As always, looking forward to your next video

I agree with all the complaints stated here, especially with fuse, it just feels like it's "pick the highest attack item." I rarely find any other reason to fuse anything other than silver lynel saber horns. Some things I would like to add is my sheer distain of shrines. I don't think they were improved at all from BOTW I think they were just different. If at all they were even MORE easier to cheese and at that point, why do them? I do understand it's a choice to solve them in unintended ways, but there are also 152 shrines which is unbelievably unbearable. Some of the shrines in caves were awful to reach as well. I feel like the matching of lightroots to shrines were supposed to help with finding shrines, but I found myself still looking up tutorials to find the shrine because in order to get to it I had to find a hidden cave in a random location. I also don't think the dungeons were all that different from botw, sure they had more personality, but ultimately the puzzles were still lackluster and honestly not that different from BOTW. Just a few criticisms. I did have fun with the game but it was not worth $70, I don't think any game is tbh.

Most of the issues about the sky islands and depths could be fixed if the game only focused on one of them instead of having two new maps. Imagine if only a select spots of the underground was accessible, and the rest of the content was spread to having more sky islands and caves. That gives the game one new map full of interesting things to do rather than two new somewhat empty maps.
The story order could've been fixed if getting the cutscenes was a part of completing the dungeons, rather than it being a separate quest altogether. That way you don't view them out of order or have the awkward situation where Link doesn't tell anyone what happened to Zelda even though he already knows. This also means the cutscenes for every one of them aren't copy paste since you'd get a new piece of the story with every temple completed.

I agree with so much of this assessment of the game. And I played it like you did, discovering the memories very early on in the game. Between the two, I enjoyed Breath of the Wild more. It’s in my top 3 Zelda games. Tears of the Kingdom is in my bottom 5 very near Skyward Sword.
I actually think Tears’ strongpoint was its story. The impact of time travel made me think about the game’s story much longer than I thought about Breath of the Wild’s. However I really wish the tears quest had been better managed, like Breath of the Wild’s memory quest was. Because as you pointed out, I ventured across Hyrule helping each region, knowing what Zelda’s fate was and pretending I didn’t. This hurt the game immersion for me tremendously.
While discussing the characters, I can’t believe Mineru ranked so high for you. I thought she had very little development. She was only in two memories and seemed like an afterthought. And I kinda hate the Zonai character design. The long waist looks strange. I’m not a fan of Rauru’s androgynous look. And Mineru specifically has no emotion. Her face looks exactly the same as she scolds Zelda, when she’s injured, and when she’s first introduced. And because I did the 5th sage quest just before heading to Ganondorf, by that time I had sages which did everything Mineru’s robot could do greater and faster. Ok, off my Mineru rant.
Dungeons. I agree that Ocarina of Time still has the best 3D dungeons. I didn’t consider Tears dungeons much of an improvement over Breath of the Wild’s Divine Beasts.
I agree that most of the side quests have way too much investment for the very small return. I agree that there’s too much busy work in the game. I skipped all of the Hateno quests by the time I got there. Their issues just didn’t seem important in the scope of a world where the sky is literally falling and a demon king is on the verge of arising. And I hate to think that Nintendo thought the largeness of the game justified the $70 price point. People who love the build mechanic will love Tears. It gives players something cool to talk about for years to come. But to me, it’s like showing off your baseball card collection- not very fun except to a niche group.
My favorite parts of the game were helping the Gerudo fight off the gibdo army. Rebuilding Lurelin village. Confronting the Zelda puppet in Hyrule Castle. Exploring the depths under Hyrule Castle. The epic battle before Ganondorf and the actual battle with Ganondorf.

Really good rewiew, I would have to agree with a lot of points made in this video. One thing where I differ is the side conent, I really quite enjoy exploring around and seeing what neat little quest have to offer, every once and a while you get a side quest thats really neat and intresting.

Great video ! I agree with a lot of what you said in it, although it’s funny because if you put the positive before the negative part at the end of your video, i think you get my impression of the game which I guess would be less enthusiastic than yours. The moment I realized the depths were mostly useless really changed my perspective on the game given it’s the biggest new area of the game. Overall I struggle to understand why the game took so long to come out and I had high expectations for it because of this, and I’m not really happy with what they came out with, as you said some of the new abilities suck and the others I find really tedious to use, just like the thing for the arrows. Everything takes too many steps and inputs it’s almost unplayable. Plus the grinding because I didn’t know about the dupe thing before the patch. All in all I liked the story (I shed some tears like you bro) and the dungeons and lead up to them, and some of the side quests and shrines, but there is way too much padding and not enough areas that are really new to explore… idk I’m having a hard time dealing with the fact that I didn’t like it as much as I would have wanted to :/

I agree with your over all impression and sentiments. The game stuck the landing, but I have a lot of arguments in favor of BOW story over TOK even with that opening cut scene mirroring the ending one (which was well done for sure). Over all I had fun, but by the time I really out in the hours I felt tired and not quite as satisfied. All of my issues with the last game (there really weren’t many) were in this game too or done a bit worse. It isn’t a failure of a game, but I really over hyped it in my head because of how much I liked BoW.

Havent finished it yet but so far to me its like a better version of botw. I have done the dragons tears quest, about 120 shrines and explored the depths quite a bit (yeah kinda boring for the most part, wish it would be more integrated to the story, but the Yiga clan are interesting I guess) and I got the master sword.
I also got to the entrance of the sky ship dungeon but I first want to do all the shrines before I start the dungeons. When I heard that totk has more traditional dungeons I was exited at first but reading the comments it seems they are not that great.
But it seems like a step in the right direction at least. Storywise I like it a little bit better than botw and the world doesnt feel so empty anymore but I am disappointed that the story is again not taking place in the present it just makes it less immersive for me. I also wished that there would have been one or two more settlements (lookout landing is kinda boring)

ToTK Link does feel too emotionless all things considered. I’d argue that OoT, a 25 year old game, gave him more personality.
The sad thing is, BoTW established why he’s so stoic, right? The sequel could’ve shown how he’s grown since then and how his relationship with Zelda helped him present in a more earnest way. How’s that for a little character arc?
There’s a difference between being stoic and being straight up emotionless. This Link feels like he doesn’t give a crap most of the times, with the exception of the three major scenes with Zelda. I’m not saying he needed to have big, dramatic displays of emotion- A subtle and restrained approach could’ve worked wonders for this version of Link (who just might be the most mature one we’ve seen so far).

I really loved the depths, even the dark aspect of it, my biggest complain about it is the fact that is totally underused. I wish to see more lore, more quests down there. We only have master kohga, a few mines and the final boss (in an area that feels totally different from the rest of the depths), and that's it. There is an entire hyrule down there and little to none information about it. There is a place in the depths called "Ancient Observation Deck" underneath the mountain with the heart shaped lake, what is that for? It looks cool, but there is nothing about it. Same for the Ancient Underground Fortress under Akkala Citadel, a cool place for some Hyrule lore ou a nice quest, but there is nothing there, just more enemies to fight. And I believe this criticism applies to the sky as well, I wish there was more Zonai lore, some answers from BOTW could have been answered, like what's the story of the labyrinths? Now we have a multi layered labyrinth and our prize is a piece of clothing that was DLC in the previous game, I would have been happier with a popup text with Zonai history and a few rupees for the trouble. I love the game, it's a masterpiece bla bla bla, but I will always think about how much more it could have been.

Objectively, you're right the game isn't a masterpiece. But a lot of your problems with it seem like the point of the game. It's Zelda, exploring a total of 272 shrines and roots and solving puzzles for days is supposed to be the fun. I get that repetition is definitely a problem having so many though. Only other thing is the depths being dark. That's like the whole gimmick of the depths, being dark and hard to traverse. Once it's illuminated it's a barren version of Hyrule filled with monsters and basically becomes just an item depot. I agree with everything else. The story, characters, and abilities, are lack luster at best.

And, in a multi person brawl, communication with your allies can be challenging. Link all ready has god powers, so not giving him control of the elements thereby requiring him to work with his allies seems pretty fair to me.

I disagree with one thing: I honestly love how Link shows no emotion in general. It just gives off a vibe I can’t explain…but I just love it. Giving him emotion like crying after saving zelda just wouldn’t feel right to me for some reason…idk why but it would feel cursed for a silent hero like
him to cry. It’s just nostalgia for me…and taking that silent or stoic quality away from him would definitely, without a doubt- ruin that nostalgia hands down. Tears of the Kingdom has already taken away so much nostalgia so much to the degree that taking away link’s stoic quality is one of the last things I want to lose.

I think the Link stoicism is a cultural thing. The silent hero who suffers in silence is a Japanese hero facade. There’s some merits in it, the strong silent type. Tony Soprano has a whole soliloquy about it in his show. Just my take.

This is definitely one of the most disappointing games for me. It has the potential to be the best but it failed in every aspect.

No hate, I just wonder what all this story talk is about
The series was never about "wow such story", it's mediocre at best but it's an action-adventure about gameplay and some kind of "Zelda feeling"
    (also Ganondorf)
Liked what I've played in the series, enjoy some crazy theories but never seriously cared about the "story"
    everything imo of course, yadayadayada

So many bad takes. If you feel drained, while exploring the depths, that’s on you. You have not learned to balance, exploring the depths in sections. Why would someone obsessively unlock all the light roots in one go? That’s draining. Always do what you feel like doing. Play the game naturally. Don’t force yourself to do things due to your incompetence. Part of the fun and exploring the depths is in darkness. There is so much value to be found in the depths. You just don’t realize it: Zonaite ores, mines, groves, coliseums, field bosses, poes, bargainer locations and enemy camps all of which are valuable for upgrading armor, battery, and so much more.

Maybe you didn't watch that far but in my conclusion I say that I should have ignored the depths except for the main quest stuff and I would have had a better time. I still gave the game a 9/10, so it's not like I thought the depths were a huge issue. I also offer advice that people should focus on what they find fun and ignore anything they don't find fun, since I was foolish enough to not do that. But still, I just personally did not find the depths that fun on it's own, yes it has value in that it gives you resources, but actually obtaining those resources is not that fun, at least for me. You have every right to disagree and I can't say you're wrong for feeling that way.

I have over 800 hours in BotW and most of that time was spent exploring the world without breaks.
The depths cannot hold a candle to that. If the depths cannot be enjoyed without taking breaks to ensure you don't realize how braindead it is, then it has failed as an area.
