  • Hello everyone,
Last weekend, Lawrie was taken up to the Doncaster Model Railway show - the first big show of the season. Obviously he had a super time, and decided to film his day out for everyone who couldn't make it, so join Lawrie as he walks around, looks at a massive variety of layouts, and tries not to buy anything!
A video shot and edited by Lawrie.
Additional footage from Charles, Larry and Loz.

I can feel the judging glares from my husband everytime I go 'ooooooh!' at the different models here, wish I could've gone and had a look myself! Also is that a brand new hoodie? It looks really good!

The gorgeous Leysdown (Isle of Sheppey) layout made it worth watching, almost the same part of Kent I have based my layout on. Mine is an interpretation of Whitstable, just the other side of the water channel (The Swale) seperating the island from the rest of north Kent. 🙂

great layouts - I like when models 'crawl'. especially the freights. when the operators run them too fast it triggers me. And you can't see the modelling/weathering most people apply !! good video.

I love the 3 wagons for £5 rummage boxes at these shows. You can usually find some decent wagons for inglenook or puzzle layouts in them. I'd be the same though. Prevent us spending far too much. One tip is to take your spending money in cash and leave any cards in the car hehe.

i believe if your a complete beginner, which i am , then we should try and visit as many of these exhibitions as we possibly can , these layouts will have taken a lot of time and experience, but beginners can certainly learn by simply looking and asking questions which ive found the more experienced are always happy to do ? ive just been to my first exhibition at macclesfield in the north west and really enjoyed it plus i picked up leaflets for other exhibitions in 2023 so if your a beginner like me get yourself out there and ask your questions this is how we all learn Paul

Right then, you lot. Drachinifel suggested a visit and so here I am. I've just watched the intro and consequently subscribed, gonged the bell and you shall be receiving a thumbs up on all videos henceforth.
What sold me? The subject material of course but I place no little stock in the music that is presented with videos. The piece that was playing attracted me immediately and I thought "Right. If that's how their heads operate in the musical taste area then the rest (content and music) might well be worth the penny."
So you're stuck with me. I look forward to viewing the new videos while binging on the previous ones right from the start.

As the builder / owner of Witham I enjoyed your coverage of the layout and see things from the public side of the back scene !! Something I want to see that would be really cool but not to many people do probably is to combine new with old
So making a highly detailed layout like those with shunting and run through trains but have the actual trains be like 3 rail hornby dublo or such
Basically mixing really detailed scenery but with the older toy trains from like the 50s

    • @lmm

I reckon it took Lawrie 1 minute to end up parting with his money for a locomotive model. It sometimes doesn't take me long to do similar. Although I have recently parted with some money on a really interesting book called Railways A History In Drawings done in conjunction with The Railway museum (The National Railway Museum), great book to look at engineering drawings of locomotives, rolling stock and other railway related items.

I dont do model trains, just train simulators but i think when i build my own i will do n scale so i can have a gigantic track and fit so much more detail on it and have many more different kinds of trains. I want to do a multi climate setup. The train will start in the rainy season where everything is luah and green and go through summer then fall and winter. It would give me an oppertunity to build seasonal stuff versus just building one kind of scenery

What this video showed is that non sound layouts are very toy like when up against a DCC sound enabled layout in a show environment. The lack of sound ruins any immersion or suspension of reality. Enjoyable video though.

Oh come off it, whilst in NZ in 2006 we played with my great nephew's Tomy battery powered definitely toy train set, which on addition of a teaspoon of tap water quite happily produced realistic steam. You are a bit out of date. Also all that detail, but still no train crews ( disgruntled ex train crew ). Eg southtown, all that rolling stock, but ghost trains devoid of passengers or crew, what a waste.

Smoke generators are not a mainstream feature on model railways in the UK.
Hornby has only announced this year will it have a range with ready to run smoke generators.
