- Hayley Westenra's cover of this classic Advent hymn (in Latin and English).
I absolutely love this song, and was happy this morning so thought I would make a little compilation in time for Christmas - as much as to learn the Latin lyrics as anything else! :D Oh, but I should mention that the English lyrics are my own literal translation. I didn't want to take away from the beauty of the Latin. The English lyrics to the most-common English version can be found here though: www.carols.org.uk/o_come_come_...
I really hope you enjoy this, and Merry Christmas everyone!! x Ben
P.S: Arghhh!! Just spotted two typos!! At 1:14, it should read 'Dirasque noctis nEbulas' and at 2:02 the line is 'Regna reclude cAElica'!!

Latin is truly, a beautiful language.
A pity something as vile as the false representants of god always keep using it.

You should listen to this in Hebrew. I've sorta got a bone to pick with the Romans for starting the Dark Ages.

I just can't help but feel a surge of joy when listening to this. Imagine how we will feel once we see his glorious return.
O glorious Day ❣️💕✌️
Or, more urgently, the joy once we get rid of all those wicked world leaders.
AMEN!!!!!!
Heavens rip open as flocks of angels pour down, like a bag of dust scattered by the wind. The whole earth is shattered in an instant, and inhaled into Heaven.
I'm not sure that an atheist like myself should get goosebumps from this, but God help me I do. Merry Christmas to all.
GOD? thought you said you were atheist..
Because God loves you and I equally. #TheGreatestOfTheseIsLove

Perhaps an awakening spirit? Thank you for the Christmas greeting.
Can’t believe a video I made for fun has now hit 1m views on TH-cam. That’s honestly so crazy to me. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 😀
I may speak, read, think, and reason in English, but nothing can be taken away from the awesome beauty and intensity of the Latin. Thank you for this beautiful treasure!
This may be my favorite song ever. I'm going to sing this to my baby once it's born :)

Tears literally flow down uncontrollably. I can't help not think of my deceased mother who gave us the best Christmas ever, each and every year. Mary loved the story of Jesus. Now in heaven, I know she can hear this song. Definitely, the voice of an angel. Simply love it!
I am a seminarian this is my favorite hymn. Love from sri lanka❤️🇱🇰
I swear I’m listening to an angel right now
I am a French catholic but this is a wonderful oeucumenic Christian song for all people who believe in Jesus Chist who comes to visit us everyday!
Do you happen to know a French version of the same song? I'm working on my French and I figured I'd immerse myself in French Christmas songs. God bless, mon frère!

I love these Latin hymns, makes me thank God that I was born into His Catholic Church.
I wish the Catholic Church would allow use of latin again
@@throwaway9226 I'm pretty sure the Church does allow it. For example, there are whole masses said in Latin. (Honestly I love the Latin Mass if you ever get the chance to go I would honestly recommend it)

By far the best version of "Veni, veni Emmanuel "I have ever heard. I love it!!!
I will come back on the First Sunday of Advent
Which will be happening in 8 weeks time
This is beautiful beyond words. Listening to it sung in Latin is a more powerful experience than listening to it sung in English. Thank you so much.
lanxnguyen You’re welcome so much! Thanks for watching and Happy New Year!
I love Latin I know it and love your songs
I remember singing these songs in church as a child. Latin was the language of the Roman Catholic Church. Mass was in Latin, hymns were in Latin.
I am Roman Catholic also. However, I don't ever remember hearing this hymn sung at any masses. It would have been perfect for Christmas midnight mass.
It is a hymn for the last 7 days before Christmas : one verse per day. The lyrics of the verses are the words of the great "O" antiphons.
latin is a stunning language
How did you capture an angel to sing this for you????? This was spine-tingling! So beautiful beyond measure!

Her name is hayley westernra
Love Haley Westenra. I attend a Tridentine mass on Sundays. Today being the first day of Advent, the choir sang this in Latin. Beautiful.
we used this in my Latin class when I was in 8th grade, its been four years and this brings back so many memories
The most beautiful Advents song I have ever heard It always profoundly touches my heart this song is full of hope and love! May the Lord bless you all! A Dutch Roman Catholic.
Sang this a child. Has always been each years intro to December. Can't live without it. It sticks. At long last, a translation, and Hayley (ex Celtic Woman) is perfect.
I listen to this now for hope; and to torment the soul. We are not more worthy than many previous generations, and far less worthy than most.
God help us but we will probably have to suffer terribly before the end 😔
Beautiful hymn, sung beautifully. I'm Hindu but thankfully my religion teaches respect for all other religions too.

Geeze guys, let people enjoy things without forcing religion on them.
If hinduism teaches respect for other religions, why do I hear stories of christians being killed, abused, marginalized in India?
What a heavenly voice
This song clears my mind and gives me peace
same... so lovely
Somehow I feel right singing it in Latin than in English.
☺ same here
It always sounds better in the language it was written in
Me too, to me I think it’s bet on the fact that it was written in Latin
Annoyingly you can't even hear or sing this in Latin in a Catholic Church!
Because latin isn't "relevant".....

Exquisite. The purity of Hayley's voice gives me goosebumps.
Dang she has a really beautiful voice
so BEAUTIFUL it put me in tears
What a glorious song and heavenly voice to sing it. I wish the Mass was still given in Latin. I miss that. Thank you for uploading this and sharing it.
The Mass is still given in Latin in some Catholic parishes.
I wish it was in Latin, but more importantly I wish it was the Traditional Latin Mass instead of the New Mass.
@Brad Kaple there are traditional Latin Masses available. I've been going to them my whole life 😃
@@stephaniemoolman2032 true. Just depends where you are. Some places have great availability, and others do not. Unfortunately, in my area, there really are no options that's in a reasonable drive.

Just Heavenly...
She has the voice of an angel, doesn't she? 😇 Thanks for watching.
This is the most beautiful rendition of this song I’ve ever heard
She has an amazing voice 😍🥰🥰 Glory to God in the highest
This is so beautiful and I very much appreciate you including the lyrics.
The scenery though👌
Will be singing this as the opening hymn (in English) for the start of Advent tomorrow.
its so............calming
I sing this song every year in my church's choir and it's absolutely beautiful
The only thing I don't like (if that's even possible because of its extreme beauty), is the phrasing.
It seems all wrong.
So many times I want the singer to pause (or tie) for a crotchet, and then proceed. E.g. "Qui ge-mit in ex-ilio-", as opposed to "Qui gemit in Exi-ilio"
It seems like what was meant for this sublime hymn was lost, like some children had accidentally found it and just 'went for it', and then all the World copied what they'd done without ever thinking.
Absolutely fabulous song, heard it first time and could not stop listen to it.
well... my eyes welled up. it's so beautiful, seeing the stars along with it made it so magical.
In mass, instead of english, my grandma would start speaking the old way (Latin). For 34 years of her life, the catholic church, everything was in Latin, and so she taught me, and some of my many cousins some Latin songs.
Amazing. I'm watching this video exactly 2 years from the day it was uploaded. That must be some sign...

Thank you so much! Love this hymn, so seldom heard.
It is actually sung every (or nearly every) advent in traditional Christian churches, but sadly American Evangelicalism has, for the most part, done away with advent and traditional hymns in favor of CCM "worship songs."
Hayley Westenra's voice is the perfect match to this song. Hauntingly beautiful....thanks for posting this version! Merry Christmas....

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16
We listened/watched this in class today. So captivatingly beautiful.
I'm an atheist, and heard this tune for the first time at a Border's bookstore many years ago. I immediately turned to the counter and asked the staff what the song is, as I wanted to buy the CD (yes, those were the days). But there was already another lady with the same question, and before we could be help, a second lady stopped by with the same question!
Merry Christmas to all and Happy New Year 2023.
Thank you for sharing this, it's absolutely beautiful!
My daughter and I enjoy singing along, as she knows Latin and I know English!
I'm delighted you and your daughter are enjoying it together. Merry Christmas :)
@ bhunjan i find this to be, in my opinion, one of the most humble and thoughtful of all of the advent hymns out there i personally enjoy this hymn very much thank you
It's such a heavenly and lovely voice. It touches my heart deeply. Praise the Lord.
Just stunning cover.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee oh Israel!
One thing I especially appreciate about the original Latin text is that in the stanza about Moses & Israel @ Sinai it actually uses the name "Adonai" for God.
+Brian Rackley I am familiar w/ that, thank you. Still, it is especially fitting to reference "Adonai" in the context of a passage about the giving of the law @ Sinai.
I heard them sing "Come Oh Come Emmanuel" for the 1st time this year, today @ Mass.
Beautiful song for Christmas.
Just an incredible, beautiful rendition. Ita very powerful, and really evokes lots of feeling and emotion, just flawless.
The perfect 2020 hymn for Advent. Come Emmanuel, come!

Chillingly beautiful. This is none of your Xcrement Factor trash - Hayley has such an amazing voice!!
+Hannah Carroll Doesn't she just? Thanks for watching :)
very nice this song! Glorified be the Lord's name!
I'm Brazilian. My languange, Portuguese, is technically still Latin; vulgar Latin, which, because of one Portuguese king in Portugal, began to be called 'Portuguese.' The king changed the name, but not the language, so it is still vulgar Latin to this day, technically speaking. In today's terms, Portuguese is informal Latin.
For example, I can translate some of these Latin phrases to Portuguese and it still looks very similar.
"Emmanuel nascetur pro te, Israel" - Latin
"Emmanuel nasceu por te, Israel" - Portuguese
"Veni, veni, Emmanuel" - Latin
"Vem, vem, Emmanuel" - Portuguese
"Qui gemit in exilio" - Latin
"Que geme em exilio" - Portuguese
Yes! These Portuguese words that I used are common words used daily in Brazil.
It is amazing for me to see that medieval Latin is still very similar to Portuguese, which is just informal Latin, technically speaking.
Thank yo Hayley for uploading this video I can do some learning before this years Christmas celebration ,also your rendition is the most teachable for me I have not been able to find anything close , just singing the whole whole version in Latin plus English , thanks again, blessings Linda
Hermoso!! Dios nace para todos, espiritual y profundamente conmovedor. Me encanta esta canción :).
Dijo "wow, Latin es fácil entender", entonces me di cuenta que es español
Very lovely! Just one little corrective point: Veni Veni Emmanuel is not a Christmas hymn. It is an Advent hymn. Advent is the season, which emphasizes the hope and expectation of the coming of the Lord in ancient Israel and the Church. Advent consists of the 4 Sundays before the feast of Christmas.
I luv seeing it written in both languages & the pics are beautiful.
