Colour Dodge layer... I've been painstakingly rendering the reflective look for ages when I could have just done a colour dodge layer... well, you live and learn. Thanks for the great tutorial.
I think that one you are referring to is just a hard edged ellipse set with flow and opacity tied to pen pressure and a bit of multiplying texture added as well.
Great demo, Scott. It's pure pleasure to watch you painting and also tons of tips. Can't wait to add the new dvd series to my Scott Robertson collection. I have all your Gnomon dvd's. You rock man, always fresh and inspiring. cheers
Great tutorial as always Scott! You've taught so many people so much just over the internet, you have all the right to feel very proud to be a great teacher, and to be able to do such thing within 10-20 mins. I have a request, if you find the time within your hands: I would love to see a video about your thought process during general design during sketching, or line work i.e. rhythm structure, choice of curves, line weight and general shapes you see whilst inventing designs. Thanks very much.
I work in Photoshop much like I would work in acrylic or gouache. Meaning I build up my colors and values by glazing over an underlying sketch with a brush set to have a lot of pressure sensitivity or low opacity.
Thank you for the answer. Now I saw 60% all your other videos and now I know you do it quite often! It's easier working this way! Expecially for people like me that is more "technical" than "artistic"!
How to Render is still a work-in-progress. How to Draw is currently at press and is slowly reaching production. Next up is the recording of the 26 video tutorials that are linked to the How to Draw book. Then work will resume again on the rendering book. It's been so hard to get these done I cannot give you an accurate release date at this point. I can say though that it is happening.
Amazing Scott! I Want to take your schoolism class , would love to learn more from you, I'm waiting for your new books to arrive. I really appreciate this free tuts for those who don't have the money to assist any of the schools or workshops that you teach on. If you ever come to Barcelona please let me know!!!
Scott I'm going to buy your books when they come out. But If I had a choice, I would rather buy a video version of your book. So I can paint along side with your video. But please! Don't stop free video Fridays.
hi friend, Intuos 2 is great. Been running mine for many years now. It's a great tablet and cheaper than all the new stuff. Bought mine used on ebay years ago, never had a problem. The bigger the size the better!
So excited to whip out the Wacom after watching this vid... I'm looking at your books on amizon right now too. Going to convince my parents to help subsidize some pre-orders!
hello ... I work so amazing, I loved ... Could you tell me what configuraición pc should have in order to get results like this? I understand this is a lot of talent ... and part of the technology resources ... is that a computer can not recreate his talent ... but would like to try ... I can only know what computer to buy. Thanks and regards, sorry for my English I'm using google translator
Hi Scott... yet another awesome tutorial. Thanks for sharing your processes. Can I ask a simple question? How do you blend your colours and values using Photoshop?
Koutetsu, you can work out the design first in grey scale before doing the colorizing I do this process quite a lot as it is much faster and makes it easier to focus on the design without being swayed by color.
May I ask you something very basics? Do you thing it is possible to work on shapes and design using only greyscale (values) and adding the colours as a last step? Or is always better to add the colours at almost the beginning like you do in this video?
How do I begin to do this type of rendering/drawing etc? This has always escaped me some how. What is the process like for the beginner? How do I get started?Your recommendations/ Thank You.
Hi, the best I can do is point you to my book, How To Render. It has around 20 hours of video tutorials that support the book content, all about doing this type of rendering.
Thank you Scott, your tutorials are great... May I ask you what devices are you using. What kind of drawing table are you using when using photoshop? Thanks
Hey Scott! Love your work. Huge fan!!! But how are you toggling so fast between different colors/tones during the "sculpting" part of the tutorial?? I'm baffled. haha
+James Blackwell this is concept art and design, if you haven't found tutorials already. It can be a mixed media process with 3D, photography, and graphic design in the recipe

For a "short" FTF there is a ton of insight and information. Once again thanks for sharing your workflow and thought process.
I work in Photoshop much like I would work in acrylic or gouache. Meaning I build up my colors and values by glazing over an underlying sketch with a brush set to have a lot of pressure sensitivity or low opacity.
Great tutorial! Thanks for the PS file share, really cool to be able to look through the layers and further explore/understand the decisions/process.
Thanks. Noted for a future FTF. Probably will happen when I get my head into writing my How to Design book, after How to Render is complete.

SCott,
When you use your tablet what brush settings do you tend to use in general
13:59 Why did you make that layer mask and then just remove it?
Just to show how I use mask layers, this was not a full rendering demo otherwise I would keep it and start rendering more details.
Just awesome!
Really great stuff! Very helpful! Just subscribed!
