The 1985 BYU Cougars just happened to have a road game in Hawaii on the schedule meaning they were within their rights to play a 12th game. Having won the National Championship in 1984, the Cougars were also invited to participate in the third annual Kickoff Classic, the week 0 clashed played at the Meadowlands.
This unlikely sequence of events saw BYU play 13 times during the regular season and capped off the campaign with a 14th fixture, a losing effort in the Citrus Bowl to Ohio State. This was the first time since 1913 a school would play 14 games in a season. Safe to say, a lot had changed since Pop Warner was coaching Carlisle.
The NCAA opted not to intervene, seeing this matter as nothing more than a coincidence. They were right, for the most part. It wouldn’t happen again until 1994, when Fresno State backdoored its way into 13 regular-season games. But they didn’t reach a bowl game, and it was quietly forgotten about.
However, something happened in 1992 that would soon impact scheduling…the conference championship game. The SEC launched their game, but it would be the only one in place until 1996. That is when the Big XII and Western Athletic Conference decided to join in on the fun. This is where we find a BYU Cougars program on the ascendency.
Legendary Head Coach LaVell Edwards and offensive coordinator Norm Chow had found a quarterback to execute their high-flying ambitions in Steve Sarkisian. As a junior, he led the team to a 7-4 record, but the team had a lot more on its plate in 1996.
The Cougars were about to embark on the longest schedule ever devised in modern college football. Every loophole, every additional game, every possible way to nerf a schedule was to be carried out.
We start with the 1996 Pigskin Classic and a showdown against Number 13 Texas A&M in Provo. The story doesn't end until BUY makes college football scheduling history.

BYU has been screwed over too many times by the elitist college football establishment. At least they were awarded the natty in 84.

I would love to see a video about college baseball schedules in the 1980's. D1 teams can only play up to 56 games in the regular season. In the 80's some teams were playing 70, 80 or even 90 games.

San Diego State set the record with 91 games played in 1982. Interestingly, they only played two games at the College World Series and were bounced in the first round. Wichita State played 87 games that year too. From what I can tell, their schedule was chock full of home contests against DII and NAIA schools. I'm kind of down the rabbit hole now so you may one day get your wish.

@@thetouchback Important note, the College World Series refers to the games played in Omaha, everything before that is just the tournament. If you end up doing a video, it'll be good to know this.

This team has probably the best defense in byu history. I just remember thinking. 15 games is insane. The wac did truly deserve three bowl teams that year

Because of my mission, it worked out perfectly. My freshman year was the year we won the National Championship and my senior year was the year Ty Detmer won the Heisman. I saw a lot of great football there. I was working and living in the Seattle area by the time Sark came along so the UW Huskies were my #2. Still bummed about not having a perfect season.

Actually, BYU made the Cotton Bowl because with the advent of the 16-team WAC, the Cotton Bowl and Holiday Bowl had an agreements with the WAC, Pac-10, and Big 12 wherein the Cotton Bowl could chose between the WAC champs and Pac 10 #2 and the Holiday Bowl would get the other team. On the other side of both bowl matchups would be Big 12 opponents (Cotton the #2 team and Holiday the #3 as I recall).
Ironically, the Cotton Bowl chose BYU over the Washington team that beat BYU earlier in the year.

Fantastic job brotha! This was my childhood right here. Although 1997 was when I started my BYU fandom and first game. It was only a year after this season. I grew up 20 minutes away from Provo and the stadium. You got that interesting and weird BYU feel very well that at the end of the day has got to be respected. BYU was a pioneer in football back in these days. Great job

2002 & 2003 Alabama was bowl ineligible due to NCAA violations so they scheduled a season ending game against Hawaii both seasons. Going 1-1 in those matchups. A nice way to get a “bowl” trip anyway.

Great video - However, the Bowl Alliance took unranked 7-5 Texas over BYU to play Penn St in the Fiesta Bowl, not Nebraska. It was because Nebraska lost. 1996 was one of my favorite seasons of all time because of how crazy things got down the stretch.
BYU actually made the elitist establishment re-write the college football laws in 1984, 1996, and 2001 to ensure that the big money was reserved for the elites….paving the way for Utah to “bust” the BCS in 2004…when every BYU fan knows it was a long process paved way by the boys in blue.

The counter argument for high school vs. college games not counting is that it was so common place back then. Heck, my high school defeated temple in 1924, was rivals with D2 Bloomsburg, and played in the first night football game against Mansfield.

College football has always had an aroma of pro rasslin about it-- not that games are "fixed" in that sense, it's just that nobody really thinks conference changes, "the Mediocre Bowl" etc. are anything other than crassness.
