As a little boy my parents taught us to put our cart back where they belong. They also taught me that if you are crossing the parking lot and a car is coming to stop and let the car go and then cross and if the car does stop for you, give them a little wave to say thank you. I am amazed on how many people walk right out in front of cars like they are not even there (especially in parking lots). To this day, when driving if someone takes the time to stop and let me out in traffic I give them a little wave just to say thanks, just as my dad did 50 years ago. To all the parents out there, do the right thing your kids will learn from you and hopefully do the right things too.

Aldi has the right idea. Make them pay for using the cart - refund if the cart is returned. Many times people who are finished reloading [in the parking lot] will offer their carts to those making their way to the store. It's fun to do the quarter swap - a good way to be neighborly . . .Godspeed Cornstars.

Seeing shopping carts left all over the parking lot just ticks me off. I am 70 years old and very arthritic. If I can push the cart to where it belongs there is no excuse for healthy people to leave them by their car. So disrespectful.

The only grocery store that does that over here in the States is Aldi. It took people a bit to get used to it and remember to have a quarter ready! And people still leave carts out at Aldi, but usually it's a little act of kindness for the next person to not need a quarter vs being lazy.

Here in Canada at Superstore we use a dollar coin, and do the parking lot swap coming and going too. We all have a loonie handy for the shopping carts. A loonie being our one dollar coin with the bird the loon on it. (So of course the two dollar one is a toonie.😊)🍁

As a kid maybe 9-10 years old my mom had a bad back. We used to go to a store called "The Mart" in Grafton, MA shopping. We would get in the store and no carts because nobody brought them back. She would send me out to get some carts for Mr. Roth that owned the store. All the time she was shopping I was gathering carts from the parking lot and get big old smiles from old man Roth every batch of carts I brought back in the store.

So many of us grew up with that “WHAT DID YOU DO?” “WHY DID THIS HAPPEN” voice from our parents/partners. And that’s not the point. Sometime things just happen. I hate it when people throw garbage on the ground! So, years ago I told myself "Well, do you want to be mad all the time when you see garbage on the ground? Why not just pick it up and be happy?" In the small apartment building I live in, people who live here throw garbage everywhere. Some tenants clean their car out and throw trash down by their car! So, I started picking it up almost every day. In a short while, there was less and less garbage thrown down. Now it is rare to see even small bits of garbage on the ground here. For a fact, the people who live here were indirectly trained to put garbage in the nearby dumpster. It is true, people copy what they see! Makes me happy that our parking lot is clean all the time! Yes!

I always put the shopping cart back in the corral when I'm done. I hate when people don't do that. One time somebody left the cart sitting in a handicapped parking spot. The corral was literally 5 feet away from where they left the cart. I moved it just as an elderly lady was pulling into the handicapped spot. How lazy do you have to be not to put the cart in the corral when it is only 5 feet away?

Shopping carts. It is a generation thing. The ONLY thing that would explain a person refusing to operate as a responsible adult in this issue is a selfish sense of entitlement . . . . a thing that seems to be the norm for anyone born after Gen X. It is evidence of poor parenting, declining morals, greed, self interest, and a turning away from God.
In other words. . . . just one more sign of the times.

In the past, I haven't always returned my cart, but I heard someone on youtube say that one day they felt that they "should" be doing that, and after that started returning their cart, so that made me stop and think that I should always do that too. A funny sort of off shoot story is that there was one grocery store parking lot we used to go to, where all of a sudden the carts would almost seem to decide on their own (I know it sounds weird) to just quickly take off all of a sudden, and start rolling fast across the parking lot, sometimes running into cars parked there. It didn't happen with all of them at the same time, but just one would do it. I had mentioned that to my husband, and the last time he and my daughter were there (several years ago now, so I don't know if it's still happening) they also saw the same thing happen. I know wind can cause carts to turn and go sometimes, but this was different. They almost looked as if they were being pushed quickly. It was really odd. Haven't seen that happen at any other grocery store parking lot like it did at that one either. Yeah wind might cause them to move somewhat, but not quickly start rolling at high speed across the parking lot though lol.

I once heard someone say that when you don't put your cart away in the corral that it's like stealing from the merchant because now they have to pay an employee to do it. Truth is the employee could be paid for doing some other job instead of running around the parking lot to gather the stray carts. Same thing as throwing out the garbage or not putting an item back where you got it when you decide you don't want it. It's a matter of integrity.

I usually put the cart in the area with other carts, except at our local WalMart, where I will leave it near the handicap parking space where we usually park, because so many people that have mobility issues like to use a cart to walk into the store. Trying to seal a bead on a tire with either is very dangerous, especially when you have a bead blaster that is designed for the job.

DC- Shopping carts- One of my earliest jobs (I think I am your age), was as a shopping cart wrangler. The thing was, we had a retirement cewnter about a mile away from the store. Every day, I'd go down there, and every day, I'd finf 15 to 20 carts to bring back. DC- Do you know how difficult it was to wrangle those carts across TWO major streets, in normal city traffic? Wanna guess how hard it was in 2 or 3 feet of snow??? Wanna guess what happened if we didn't go over there every day? Yeah! 30 to 50 carts, or two trips. I am not goping to lie- it was not enjoyable. So, a small part of me says, "yeah, leave it in the parking lot", and, yeah, I do just that. And, the carts cannot be taken out of the parking lot, as there is some manner of sensor that will lock up the wheel. Also, the store I shop at? It hire people with special needs and abilities to get the carts. It also hire retired people to get those carts. If we all put the carts back, what do you think happens to those folks? Yeah! I am protecting their jobs!

DC, leaving shopping trollies where they were left is pure laziness, It is a sign of the times, I'm afraid, people should take responsibility for their own actions. You wouldn't be happy, to find you couldn't park just where you wanted, just because someone had dumped their trolly there or would you? If the store has to mop up your mistakes, do you expect them to deliver a trolly to you in your parking space? And then go and do your shopping for you? That is so different to the world I grew up in. You had to go to the store, find a trolly, insert your £coin in to unlock the trolly, then do the shopping, replace the trolly in the bay and get your £coin back!!! Fairness all around. From UK.

I always put my cart away. There's nothing worse than a cart scrapping the entire side of your car, while you're inside shopping. Parking lots aren't nearly as flat as people think! In a lot of cases, that's where the excess snow gets piled up is in the large parking lots. We all know the damage that causes five inches or less of cenent or concrete. In Des Moines, I've seen carts go down the huge parking lots into the busy streets, cross the road and into another parking lot. It stopped after hitting a curb, changing direction, and scrapping the paint off the side of the car. What a nightmare insurance claim that would have been. Usually, insurance will subrogate the damage, but how when the cart belonged 250 yards away from a different store? Then you're stuck paying the deductible. If people see others putting the cart away, others will follow. It's a small kindness. 😊

Always corral your shopping cart. I have seen wind blow carts into other people's vehicles. Negligence is subjective.

Garbage is always thrown in a container (mine or there's). On carts, I place them right outside the store since I buy only small quantities and use my bags.
For a old guy your pretty spry, I'm at least ten to fifteen years older and I cannot move heavy objects like you.

I was waiting for my wife in the parking lot. Nearly every spot was occupied. People were coming out, emptying their carts, then rolling them into an empty parking spot. I'd had enough. The next guy came out, rolled his cart into an empty spot, I got out, got his cart and rolled it right behind him so he couldn't get out. Sometimes you just gotta get peoples' attention.

Re:shopping carts. I always put it back in the cart coral. It’s not that difficult and really the decent thing to do. People are so self absorbed in themselves now. Most of them don’t even realize what they are doing or not doing. Another sign of our society going downhill.

I always put my cart back. There's no excuse not to . Nobody wants to go the extra mile or do something for nothing . It's your responsibility as a human being. People that don't put their cards away have bad character and our lazy pieces of trash . So yes I do agree

I would NEVER just leave a cart next to my car! I have been known to actually go around and collect carts left by people who have done that and return them all the way inside the store. It's not asking too much and it's the right thing to do. I completely understand for some elderly people but if you can put it in the right place, don't be lazy and block a parking space.

Funny you’re talking about shopping carts, today as I’m leaving Walmart I noticed someone had left their cart in back of a car, I saw a guy pull up to the cart and take his child out and left his cart also in back of this car! Lazy people!

Leaving shopping carts around is probably the most selfish thing you can do. You can walk for a mile inside of Costco or Menards and then the minute you make it back to your car, you are just done? That doesn't make sense.

Yes. People need to take responsibility and put their carts in the designated area. It’s like people at self checkout who leave their basket on the counter, don’t bother to grab their receipt, and leave items they didn’t purchase. No consideration for the next customer. (These) People are thoughtless!

Shopping carts is how the current state of affairs with shopping started. First they allowed us to store their carts in a few containers in the parking lot. Next they allowed us to check ourselves out. Then they started demanding to view your receipt. Add pricing increases to that mixture and shopping is stupid now. I'm a RN and I promise you not a single employee from any big box store has ever been asked to help perform any of the hundreds of jobs at the hospital and with no pay.

I often put it back in store. But if not in corral. Plus I straighten it up. You can get 8x as many carts in some area with just a bit of care. I do like Aldi idea. I often bring a cart, return a cart. *that I give to next person for free*. But if bunch of carts. I make a buck. Messed up knees and all.m

I love finding cart's near the disability parking. It's hard to use my walker, go get a cart, return with my walker and the cart to my car and put my walker back in the car, then use the cart to shop. And yes I leave the cart for the next disabled person near the disability parking space.

I'm 52 and maybe is just me or my generation is the last to have any sort of respect. Those that leave carts all over are lazy. I brought my kids up to put them in the corrals . We lead by example and I showed my kids this is how its done and they still do it. I live just outside of St. Louis and see people dump them everywhere. It takes time for those working outside in the sun when they have to go searching for them. but hey the costumer doesn't have to worry about the heat.. Unlike the poor person collecting the carts.

The people who just leave their shopping cart in the car park.... Are the people that actually deserve a shopping trolley to hit their car. I have had two cars damaged by shopping trolleys, all because someone couldn't be bothered, and then someone else has thrown it out of their way and into my car because that's not their problem either. My parents raised me right, don't even touch something that doesn't belong to you unless you can afford to replace it. Apparently most parents don't raise their kids I guess :( I gave up driving anything nice to go shopping, every trip results in another door being swung open into it or a trolley thrown into it.

I put carts back in the corrals. The only exceptions I would allow carts out in the parking lots, are the handicapped and elderly and moms with small kids in the car. I usually help them by taking the cart after they unload, that way they can skip taking it to the cart corral and a smile to be exchanged with a "Hello, may I take your cart?".

I'm 74 yo and I not only take the cart back to the place designed for it but I reorganize the carts left there. I had a nice truck get badly dented in the driver door because a cart was left in the parking lot and the wind blew it all the way across the lot (400 ft.) right into my truck. There are a lot of really lazy entitled people shopping nowadays.
