    Best thing that works for me is Odoban. I buy the large jug of concentrated liquid and pour some down the drains (double sink in kitchen). Sometimes I pour the whole jug into them if they are particularly smelly. Works well for me.

    I get bottled lemon juice 3 pack from Costco. When it smells funky, I just run hot water, turn it off and pour a little bit of the lemon juice. Let it sit then I go and turn on the hot water and garbage disposal at same time for a short rinse and voila! No funky smell! 😁😉🙌🙌🙌 I do this once a month.

    For disposal blockage, I occasionally use Dawn dish detergent. Squeeze a liberal amount into to drain, a splash of water, a quick spin of the disposal, and it roughly cleans the side-slot grinders of the disposal (if that type). Seems to work better than trying to brush it.

    Thanks for this tip! I went with the baking soda, vinegar and a pot of boiling water. It seemed to do the trick. I also use a pipe brush that looks like a baby bottle brush only bigger and using some Dawn dishwashing soap I was able to clean the sides of the pipe going up and down all around pipe. The Dawn cut the sludge and built up grease like crazy. I shined a light down into the drain and you could clearly see where the baking soda, vinegar, pipe brush and Dawn did the trick. Smell is gone! Thanks big time!

    question: I have some taps my landlord just had replaced, washers and everything. Now the water that comes out smells like oil/grease that smells like my mechanic dad after his shift. It's not over powering but definitely a smell there. Even in the cup when I've sniffed it, the water is still clear and there's no rainbow sheen to it, and it's stronger when we use the hot water. But every tap he's touched has this smell to the water. The water does taste slightly off. Should I just flush the taps and if so, how long? I'm not wanting to call them again cause it took a few months to get them to believe me there was an issue.

    Well I heard the baking soda should sit for 15 minutes, then add a cup of vinegar and leave it for another 15 minutes, then add the boiling water, and another source said flush it with hot water for a few minutes, and another source said after you add the baking soda and vinegar to leave it for at least a few hours before flushing it with hot water. I dont think you're allowing the solutions enough time to work their magic, but your method may still work just probably not as well, i dont k ow, but a third source say put a cup of baking soda and 2 cups of vinegar, leave it a few minutes then add the boiling water. Personally i just tried the cup of vinegar for 30 minutes and then added a kettle of boiling water and further flushed it with 2 minutes of hot water will see if that works, i think it's done something

    rule number 1 never pour grease down your sink

  • @tutsecret499
    @tutsecret499 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I am puzzled with the unique smell I have in my kitchen after I had a back up sink. I had to carry the soapy, dirty water from the sink to the bathroom to prevent to flow on the kitchen floor while waiting for the plumber. The water comes from apts above me and from the side apt. I had this back up sink many times in the past and last time it happened, the landlord had to fix the hole kitchen and put brand new pipes from the ground and in the wall below the sink, and now after 2 years, the back up sink again. In my opinion, back up sink would never happen if other neighbors didn't use the garbage disposal as dumpster. Sink is for water running not to dump food. After the ordeal of carring the water from sink to the bathroom back and forth, after the plumber fixes the cloggling and OMG the unique smell that stays in the air during the back up and after the fixing and cleaning. Why this smell. I can't describe the smell. All I know is sickening, very subtle. Why this smells. Is the mixture of the grease, soap and dirty causing this unique smell? I can't describe the smell. It's not rotten, it's not sewer smell. What's that smell? I had to change clothes, washed many times my hands, and I still smell it after one day. The smell is agonizing in a very subtle way. People were telling me to sue the landlord because of the smell, the delay to fix it, the repetitive back up sink, repetitive flood on my floor.

    • @snappytheaverage
      @snappytheaverage ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is most likely the “grey water” smell that forms from soap that has bonded to oils while cleaning dishes. The soap doesn’t clean the smell; instead, the soap maps the water carry away the dirty material. That dirty material mixed with the smell of soap makes the grey water smell. You can small this same oder in places that irrigate their flower beds or fill their Las Vegas ponds with recycled non-sewage water.

    Also the underside of the rubber piece on the disposal side of the sink, gets slimy biofilm on it from food splashing back. Clean the underside of that. It's nasty.

    get a 10 pound bag of ice, turn on the disposal and put in as much ice as the disposal will swallow until there is so much crushed ice you can see a brown scum forming. THEN rinse clean and add lemon juice and not the peel and allow to set.
