    How do you film a romantic, action cult classic like Drive on a tight budget and no second unit? Cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel, ASC, walks us through how he made the car rigs and worked in a tiny elevator space and still get cinematic lighting. We talk about shooting around the movement of the sun, negative fill, and lighting cues.

    For the longest time, I've been wanting to hear Newton Thomas Sigel talk about the cinematography of DRIVE at length in a video interview. Thanks for making it happen, Indy Mogul! This movie is an absolute classic. A modern masterpiece.

    This movie was soooo underrated. I tried to get so many people into it but everyone said it was too slow and awkward. And the soundtrack was a masterpiece. "There's something insiiiddde youuu.... / It's hard to explaaainnn..."

      I think they just marketed it wrong. Most people expect it to be some kind of fast and furious film, but it's not. So people who like that stuff go to it and are disappointed while others might avoid it because they don't like dumb action movies. Same goes for Only God Forgives and Neon Demon btw. OGF looked liked more like martial arts movie and they told us Neon Demon is a horror movie. Sure both movie can fit those genres, but not fully. When I saw OGF, I think about 1/3 or maybe even half of the people in the cinema left. It's weird when you think a movie is f-ing amazing and yet you can't really recommend it to anyone.

    • @AutoFOCUSED.
      @AutoFOCUSED. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@uglygiantbagsofmostlywater I don't think it's because people were expecting anything --- the pacing isn't just everyone's taste. I loved the movie but I see why some people think it's awkward and slow. You have to be into character development and pacing, but not everyone is. Some people also feel uncomfortable around awkward people. I think the only movie I like more than this one as far as "driving" related themed movies was Baby Driver.

    I freaking love this movie. I remember seeing the trailer back in the day and thought, “So... A Fast and the Furious knockoff with the guy from The Notebook? No thanks.” Man was I wrong. Someone recommended it to me a few years after it was released and I fell in love with it. The production design’s use of color, Sigel’s cinematography, Ryan’s cold exterior that just explodes in the second half. The soundtrack. Just a beautiful and dark film. Definitely in my top 3 movies of the 2010s.

    Great video, great film and a fascinating insight. I always wondered how the idea to dim the lights in the elevator scene came to be. That said, I'm shocked you never noticed the shot with the framed mirror/family photo/Driver silhouette. It's one of the best shots in the film! I'll let you off for making this though. Great job.

    I LOVE this content and please don’t misunderstand what I’m gonna say. I think the term Indy is evolving. Shot on arri and Cooke with the option of zeiss master primes isn’t really what a lot of people think of when you say Indy. I do appreciate the lighting diagrams and hope we can see more of that stuff when it’s bigger budget stuff. Drive had about a nice $16Million to play with. Maybe talk how you’d pull off some stuff on a micro budget too.

If you already have some experience, I reckon you might have worked with different lenses and sort out some of your favorites, but if you haven't, then how do you choose? 10:50 Does ‘go see them’ mean in-person training? Or just online? I read and watch plenty. But being trained - in person - interests me. Disappointed you didn’t ask about other scenes shot slo-mo at 120 - there were a lot.
