halo, please answer my question, will my dwarf gourami eat the babies platy and guppies? or should i never put my dwarf gourami in the same tank as my platy and guppy?
I've had some troubles with tanks within the last couple months I've gotten into the hobby. Luckily one guppy has survived everything and she's been with me the longest. I've got her now in a 20 gal tall community tank with 3 other guppies(1 male with 3 females)/6 ember tetras/4 albino corys/1 female betta with plenty of plants and hiding places. She's nice and chunky and im always happy to see her
So I've only had fish for about a week and half, but I have platys and freaking love them. They're so active and cute, and never seem to be afraid of anything. They even follow the gravel vacuum around when I clean their tank. Probably just looking for food, but it's adorable.
I keep platies, guppies, mollies, and swordtails in a heavily planted 70 gallon aquarium. The colors and the tiny fry darting around is so satisfying to watch.
I have found recently, with my Platy tank, that they can be somewhat trained. Also, I can put my face right on top of the front glass, and they are just completely okay with that and most get extremely close. There is no evidence of fear. They explore my face! In my 40 years keeping Platies, only recently have I experienced such a friendly gesture from them.
I've probably been very unlucky, but the female platies that I had were nightmares in my aquarium. They were so greedy with food. Stealing wafers from bristlenose plecos, corys ( even ripping off a corycat mouth during the process. He healed up eventually and the barbells regrew). They were terrorising a dwarf gourami as well. Never had an issue with the males however, even now when no females are left in the tank, they are perfectly chill with everyone. Pretty sure I had crazy platies, but that really discouraged me ever having them again.
Excellent video as always! I’ve had my red wag platies and fancy guppies for several months now and I’ve noticed that my platies have more personality than my guppies! I endearingly call them my American bull dogs! Something about their stocky bodies and their fearless nature are too comical. I adore them!
I will never get platys again, that's for sure. I went from 6 to over 50 in a few months and it was a disaster keeping the tank clean until the babies were big enough to take to the fish store.
I've had both of these fish. I can't choose a favorite!! Love love love them both. Platys maybe hold their own a little better with a fish like a dwarf gourami. Guppies have the pretty tail but that precludes having fin nipping type fish. Platys have so many gorgeous colors and patterns.
This is based off of personal preference and space, I would go with guppies because I can always mix and match breeds to make a hybrid tank. Boom instant genetic diversity and healthy fish, plus you have a nice display for as long as you cull deformed fish and less colorful ones.
I like the larger size of platies; they're just bigger enough to open up a lot of other tankmates that might eat guppies. On the flip side I guess guppies would be better with nano fish maybe?
started my first tank a few months ago and decided to go with guppies over platys or danios and i couldnt be happies got 8 in a 10g and its a blast to watch, i got 3 males to 5 females but ive never seen one of them show any interest in the females ever and he at an age where he would he is just a bit of a loner which gave me the confidence to add 2 other males
It took me like 6 separate tries, and really nailing down what I need to add to the tank in order to be successful with guppies Having soft water with guppies is a nightmare
Yep same here. I will never buy guppies from other than high end strain breeders again. The one from my LFS are so sick with diseases. I always thought buying more is the way but it turns out u better of buying either trio or just female that are already pregnantfrom good breeders. That way less chance of disease. I even go as far as seperating the babies and the mom to make sure i raise new generation "free" from disease. While getting many is faster, you will be dealing with diseases that can wipe out the entire community. Startjng fresh is not that bad, i started with 1 mom and after 2 months i have 45 new super healthy guppies.
Now Having the Adopted 4 Blue-eyed Baby Platies and my Guppy Colony (AKA my Fabulous Flappy-Flappies 🥰) for a month and a half now I have something to share about them.. Since last year ,I have had a 45 gallon hex tank In my possession from a purchase on craigslist,Always waiting for the right type of fish or fishes to fill it. I have adopted a few small fish since then but always holding out for something else. Well I'm very glad I was patient. They have turned my empty and sadlooking 45 gallon hex into a non-stop flurry of color, activity, and aquatic sunshine for my Living Room. 😁Always on the move, they are adorable and adored by my family 🤩 PS:Dear Jason and Joanna, as a footnote I wanted to also say another Thank you ..When I spoke about them in the live chat the week before I picked them all up, I was concerned about anything I might do wrong with their care. You were absolutely right. I have dealt with much harder things to conquer when I adopted all my cichlids who were half sick, half injured or both.So far, I have found the guppies and platies to be MUCH easier to take care of then my cichlids. Thank you today and always for everything 🤗
Platies are fantastic community fish. And so are Guppies. Hard to go wrong with either one. I prefer Platies for their larger size and their specific colorations.
Happy Monday! Team Platy! Way tougher (in my opinion) than guppies. Poor guppies with their fru fru tails. Can't hardly swim except to chase the ladies !

Great video. Loved my guppies, always curious and very active. They rather quickly overran the tank...despite some other fish which enjoyed eating the fry. Finally gave them all away as I would have had hundreds within a few months.
Love platys! Got 5 in a 20 gallon tank,3 micky mouse and two red and just found a little platy fry swimming around at the bottom under leaves keeping out the way,got them im with 5 five rasboras.
Back in my beginner years I had a 20 long with I think like four or five platies, one of which happened to be male while the rest were all female, and a trio of “male” fancy guppies one of which turned out to be female In the end I had a good handful of platies, maybe about a dozen give or take, but *dozens* of guppy babies… Lesson learned: next time…I’m sticking with platies
love this video! very helpful when you talk about the platty's not having as many fry as the guppies. i got my first platty's last month and they had fry and i discovered there werent as many as when i had guppies. thanks again for a great and informative video!!
I have both platies, guppies and also endlers in the same tank with more floating plants they are thriving in it. Last week I got a lot of platy and guppy babies. These fish are very peaceful. I am living in Kerala we get hardy water so no problem
Platy!!! I just started a 55g tank and my first fish were platys. I have 10 now. Then added 6 longfin albino corys. Next is going to be 6 juli corys. Then 12 praecox rainbows. Lastly 1 angelfish. Oh and 1 clown pleco or hillstream loach
I feel like you can keep more fish with the Platys. Everytime i want to keep something with my Guppies i have to think about finnippers and fish that will swim too fast than them and outcompete them..
My platys are opposite of the public opinion, they are very skiddish and shy. The guppys though are always playing around with each other. I like the way their tails wave around.
2 months ago, I've purchased 1 male and 1 female blue moscow. I bought only a pair, because they were the last 2 blue guppy the seller had. The male since die, I suspected that it was near the end of its life, because the veil was prety big, but the female survive and now I have about 100 or more fry spread about 4 generations, living among the surface vegetation. I overfeed, so aggression towards the fry is non existing. I think I will let the colony grow, and if by any chance the tank will become overcrowded, I can always sell the mature ones back to the seller, especially since he was not able to bring more blue guppy to sell. :)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Now I try to find new males for the "alpha" female, but there are no new blue moscow in my area :( I'm in the old guppy breeder dilema, getting new blood w/o losing the dominant line.
I love platys they're so cute but I definitely didn't do enough research years ago and they bred like wildfire (10 gal) and I didn't do enough upkeep and everyone died. But we know better now. Ty for vid
Happy Monday! Great video idea! When it comes to their body shapes, I generally favor guppies over platies “chunky fish” (which I refer to as CHONK! 🤣). Though I have to say the little orange platy fry are pretty darn cute!
Hang onto your seats!!! I’ve never kept either of these livebearers😳why?? I don’t know why I just haven’t. But, I really like them both, I’ve kept swordtails and mollies, I love them too. But out of these too I’d take the platys, I prefer the form of the platy, the shape the finnage they seem to swim more confidently imo, thanks guy happy Monday🙂👍🏻💯⭐️
Great clip about Guppy and Platy Fish😍 No doubt buddy😊 Guppy Fish really hardy Fish can adjust easily in normal water condition but Platy little sensitive😊
I have a 20g guppy tank. I also have black Venezuelan Corys and orange laser Corys in with them. I had pairs of beautiful strains, and had intended to separate the boys and girls, but moving changed all that. So my pure strains have disappeared but I have some of the most amazing color combinations with all of them in the same tank. Each group of babies is a surprise. They’re in hyper-procreating mode right now, which sucks bc I’m preparing to move so setting up another tank here for the babies doesn’t seem doable. I’m doing water changes every 6 days and it’s heavily planted. Contrary to everything I’ve read and heard that guppies eat their babies, mine don’t. They totally ignore the babies - and you’re right, they are adorable. Hope to close at least 3 wks before I’m outta here so I can get a tank set up in the new place by the time I move. I have extra filters, so I’m going to transfer current filter to new tank along with some rocks and plants, hopefully to speed up cycling. I’m buying a house, so I can do multiple tanks without landlord interference, finally. Right now I’m glad I have just one tank! I’m nervous as hell about moving these guys. At least it’s only 15 miles! Is it worth saving the water from the current tank for the new tank, or doesn’t it make any difference?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I’m hoping the filter, decor will be enough - I’m changing the substrate. It was sold as sand, but it’s more gravelly than sand, and the stuff that’s real sand is sold as just substrate. I want real sand for my Corys. Right now the substrate is black and so are the Corys so it’s hard to keep tabs on them. I’m changing it to soft, white sand - harder to keep clean, but my Corys will be happier and it’s easier to see the fish and shrimp. Thanks for the info. With all the stuff I have to move, and getting new appliances, moving the fish is going to be the hardest and most stressful part. I’m just glad I don’t have a bunch of tanks to move! 🤦🏻♀️
Totally on another topic , but.... I've run into something I've not heard discussed yet. My town in N.H. ( Derry) uses large amounts of chloramine. They say on their website that carbon filters DO NOT remove chloramines and there's a warning for aquarium keepers that you MUST remove chloramine BEFORE putting the water in the tank. I see many keepers adding water conditioner while water changing . That's a problem here. I'm using two sponge filters only. They even advise plant keepers and breweries that this water is detrimental to them. So I find in order to have a zero ammonia reading during a water change before adding water I must use TWO ML. API Water Conditioner PER gallon or I get a PPM of . 50 PPM at least of ammonia per gallon because it's reading chloramine as ammonia. I know that this is over the recommended dosage per the instructions but nothing else is working. I also have plants. This is a Nano 10 gallon cycled tank. My Ph right out of the tap is 8.0 on the high scale. What do you think? Have you heard of this warning before? Am I going to wreak havoc with my fish by using this amount of water conditioner? So far doesn't seem to be a problem. Should this info be made more widely available? I think so. No one would know unless they visited the water quality website for this area. I sure didn't until the ammonia issue and that's what my research has yielded. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Oh, and this stuff may cause some rubber parts or synthetic rubber materials in plumbing fixtures to degrade faster than normal. And they claim it's safe? No, it's just cheaper than chlorine.
I miss My live bearers, haven't had fish in a few years but I've always loved guppies and platys, I miss the fun of finding all the lil tiny lil "tadpole" looking newborn fry barely a speck lol
What is the platty variation that has black shiny blue sides and a face/belly that's orange? I had one like that a year or two ago and I loved that variation
I've got a 10 gallon tank that I got for my 3 year old daughter. How should I stock it to look fun for her but also good for me, a beginner fish keeper 🤪 Edit to add: How many should I get of each fish you recommend for my tank size?
As a beginner, like yourself, and considering that it would be a tank your child could grow attached to, I would never suggest stocking it with the purpose of breeding guppies and platies. The first time a young child see a guppy gobble up their own fry it spells the end of a rewarding hobby for that young mind. Rather get yourself 4 or 5 colorful male guppies, and add to that 3 or 4 platies. Keep the tank reasonably bare, add some colorful gravel, and maybe one of those small LED lights with built-in bubble maker. If you'd decide to add decorations to the tank...keep it small. You want the emphasis to be on the fish...not the decorations. Please keep in mind that with 7 to 9 fish in a 10-gallon tank a weekly 30% water change will become mandatory to ensure they remain healthy.
They say one inch of fish per gallon of water. I would probably go for fewer fish than that tho, just to help keep the bioload low. I would say five male guppies, and get some plants. Fish feel more confident if they have hiding places available. I have live plants, but silk plants are good. Try to avoid plastic since the edges can be sharp and snag the fins. Be sure the tank is cycled before adding fish. They make products that add a lot of beneficial bacteria to the water and make the cycling much faster. Maybe check out videos from Girl Talks Fish, she does a lot of small tank advice.
Thanks everyone! I cycled my tank for 48 hours with aqua safe plus, and healthy bacteria. I added silk plants and a couple plastic, but will replace with silk when I have the chance. We went today and decided on 1 neon blue dwarf gourami, 7 black neon tetras, and 1 mystery snail. I checked AqAdvisor and it said we have not over stocked the tank. Hopefully we will have some happy fishys. Any advice would be appreciated though!
i'm planning to have an all male guppy tank, would all male(or all female) platies be okay? i'm not interested in breeding, i just think they are wonderful fish.
I would rather Cherry Barb, Corydoras, Harlequin Rasbora, Zebra Danio, Kribensis, Ram's, and Yoyo Loach!! I just am personally not a Platy or guppy guy. I prefer Dwarf Cichlids, Danios, Barb's, Rasboras, Loaches, Corydoras, and Gourami's!!
I have a 40 gallon with 5 multis 4 leptosoma and 1 transcriptus. I used to have two transcriptus but I removed one because the other got to aggressive. Do you think I can add any more tanganyika fish the won’t add a lot of aggression Thanks
My guppies keep on dying though! I do 25% change water every other day too. It's kind of pushing me away from diving further into the hobby. Going to try platys next
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I've just started hearing about that. I get my fish from petsmart only but I need to find a good local fish store with decent customer service. Seems like all thr ones I walk into have none
I'm getting back into aquarium keeping but want to keep both the platys and guppies in a trio in 10 gallon will they be okay until I can upgrade to a 20 gallon within next couple months?
I want a tank that is going to reproduce and grow in numbers. Which eats less of there babies. I currently have guppies and they eat most of there fry. Only 10 or so each birth survive. What's the best way to reduce the cannabilism?
My plattys are HUGE! I have 3 females to 1 male. But they are constantly huge but in 6 months the females have had 3 babies in all that time. I've moved them to a 40 gal tall with live plants also thinking about moving 1 female to a 29gal alone but they just won't give up any babies. What now?
Me: I’m too advanced to keep guppies and platys. Me: I just bought 4 more tanks so I can keep guppies and platys because I haven’t kept them since the 1970s. It’s all about keeping fun fish!!
Platys. No doubt in my mind. The guppies I get from the lfs are too inbred and don’t survive. Platys are nearly bulletproof. The lfs guppies don’t breed true so I ended up with a bunch of mutts that aren’t as pretty as the parents. The Platys are always colorful. And the lfs won’t take mutt guppies except for feeders. Bottom line, since I don’t want to go to extremes to breed fancy guppies, I’ll stick with Platys and enjoy them.
Question: Why does one tank of guppies have mostly females and my other tank have mostly males? Weird or what. 90% females in one & 90% males in the other. Stumped
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Temperatures are about 2 degrees different. It is puzzling. Have to take females & males and try to make it at least 40% difference to try and balance it out. Puzzling.
i have fifty female platys and a giant female veiltale angel in a 75. favorite tank i have ever had. i don't care for male platys so they all got evicted.
1 male and 4 female guppies Your looking for trouble I had To put them in A pond cause All they did was make love I stick to My Neons ,corys,4 female betas Plecos Loaches Chinese sucker fish
I never put these fish in my tank . Even Jesus can’t multiply fish faster than these breeds can 🤣. You go from 4 -a 1000 in a matter of months . And end up With no where to put them and no one wants them . I also don’t like the way the male guppies harass the females it’s relentless and uncomfortable to watch .
I just got my first fish which includes 3 pairs of guppies. Poor females, males are harassing non- stop. I couldn't find females to purchase alone, and that's why I got pairs. I was hoping my betta, gourami's and guppies would eat most of the fry. Now I'm wondering if this is not likely based on your comment.
@@treasuringpricelesstime5962 when they sell them people just see the lovely tails but it’s awful watching the females get harassed non stop . There is no denying the beauty of the fish it’s the behaviour that’s disturbing . It’s like watching the female fish get attacked to breed non stop . I haven’t kept them in years and never will . Good luck 👍
Let’s hope your other fish can munch through a few fry . Also if you take the females away the males with. No female usually die off pretty quick as they get bored of life

I overfeed, so aggression towards the fry is non existing. I think I will let the colony grow, and if by any chance the tank will become overcrowded, I can always sell the mature ones back to the seller, especially since he was not able to bring more blue guppy to sell. :)
Glad she had the babies!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Now I try to find new males for the "alpha" female, but there are no new blue moscow in my area :(
I'm in the old guppy breeder dilema, getting new blood w/o losing the dominant line.
You two are such a lovely couple!
Thank you!
Too funny!
Definitely worth adding at some point!
There she is!😉
I have both in a community tank with neon tetras
Great clip about Guppy and Platy Fish😍
No doubt buddy😊 Guppy Fish really hardy Fish can adjust easily in normal water condition but Platy little sensitive😊
Good question - you son't need to save the water. The filter media, decorations and substrate hold the vast majority of your beneficial bacteria.
Love both of these fish. Your comments were righy on.
I don’t think it matters. Adding the dechlorinator while adding the water is fine.
I have always loved platys and guppies
I miss My live bearers, haven't had fish in a few years but I've always loved guppies and platys, I miss the fun of finding all the lil tiny lil "tadpole" looking newborn fry barely a speck lol
That is fun!
Could you please do a cory cat vs. hoplo cat showdown?
Awesome video, end of video has Molly black with red fins , what type please?
That is a high fin variatus platy
What is the platty variation that has black shiny blue sides and a face/belly that's orange? I had one like that a year or two ago and I loved that variation
That was a high fin variatus platy.
Mine was not a high fin
What are the floating plants in the tank?
Hi there! Could you please do a species profile on emperor tetras 😅🙏🏽😁
I've got a 10 gallon tank that I got for my 3 year old daughter. How should I stock it to look fun for her but also good for me, a beginner fish keeper 🤪
Edit to add: How many should I get of each fish you recommend for my tank size?
@@CarefulAtheist thank you so much!!
I would say to watch several videos from different youtubers on the subject so you don't get bad advice from comment sections.
Any advice would be appreciated though!
both are cool imo
i'm planning to have an all male guppy tank, would all male(or all female) platies be okay? i'm not interested in breeding, i just think they are wonderful fish.
Sure, people do it.
I keep both , with swordtails...
Do you think I can add any more tanganyika fish the won’t add a lot of aggression
Thanks
You never know with cichlids. The Multis may start breeding which will also help fill the tank. 😀
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks
Iam looking for a colorful little fish for my 20gal I already have endlers
I have both in the same tank
I know guppies are everywhere now, but they originated from South America and the platty is from Central America, right?
The internet is HARD
Ya, and wild types in North America too!
Watching out in the garden taking a break from rototilling Farmer Joe will send the professor some pictures on Messenger make sure he showed you.
Can you have can you keep variatus platys with White cloud mountain minnows and zebra and leopard Danio?
Definitely!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you so much for answering!
Is it safe to put guppies or platies on a freshwater shrimp tank? Will they be aggressive on the shrimps?
There is a chance they will eat smaller shrimp.
Guppies are kinda small, platys medium and molys are the large of the liver bearer community tank imo
When starting off with a new tank. Do you clean it before it’s first use ?
If it’s brand new you can wipe it down with wet paper towels, but I don’t do anything beyond that.
My two favorite live bearers
My guppies keep on dying though! I do 25% change water every other day too. It's kind of pushing me away from diving further into the hobby. Going to try platys next
If water parameters are ok, sometimes they have some weak strains out there.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I've just started hearing about that. I get my fish from petsmart only but I need to find a good local fish store with decent customer service. Seems like all thr ones I walk into have none
I would also suggest a local fish store that quarantines fish before selling.
@@eh9918 do you just call around and ask? Or do you enter the store and ask?
@@p3teytran I go into the store. That way I can also see how the fish and maintenance looks. I could have called and asked I suppose too.
Good Morning.
I'm getting back into aquarium keeping but want to keep both the platys and guppies in a trio in 10 gallon will they be okay until I can upgrade to a 20 gallon within next couple months?
It might work ok for a little while.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you for taking the time out answering my question appreciate it
Where can I find all those different colored guppies and platys! I have both guppies and platys and they great hardy fishes.
Check out Twin Cities Guppies!
I want a tank that is going to reproduce and grow in numbers. Which eats less of there babies. I currently have guppies and they eat most of there fry. Only 10 or so each birth survive. What's the best way to reduce the cannabilism?
Lots of hornwort at the top and feed the adults well - that usually does it for us!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you. I'm going to give it a try
Both
My plattys are HUGE! I have 3 females to 1 male. But they are constantly huge but in 6 months the females have had 3 babies in all that time. I've moved them to a 40 gal tall with live plants also thinking about moving 1 female to a 29gal alone but they just won't give up any babies. What now?
one of my female guppies is small and only gives birth to like 4 fry each time. It's possible the fish are eating the other fry though.
Sometimes it can take time. They could be having babies but they may be getting eaten as well?
I never had any luck with keeping guppies or platys.
That stinks!
Why do we have to choose? Can't we have them in the same tank? Just wondering.
Heck ya!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics i think i'll try them together the next time i set up a tank.
Platys all day 😍😍😍
I am curious why my plattys won't let go of their babies? Is there a way to get them to let them go?
Just time 😀
Me: I’m too advanced to keep guppies and platys.
Me: I just bought 4 more tanks so I can keep guppies and platys because I haven’t kept them since the 1970s. It’s all about keeping fun fish!!
Yes!
Could I keep only guppy males? .....or would they fight?
They can do ok together.
Platy will be more prone to eating babies?
Maybe a little?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Male Guppy the least interested so half of the problem is solved.
Question: Why does one tank of guppies have mostly females and my other tank have mostly males? Weird or what. 90% females in one & 90% males in the other. Stumped
That is weird. The only thing I can think of is temperature difference? Maybe?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Temperatures are about 2 degrees different. It is puzzling. Have to take females & males and try to make it at least 40% difference to try and balance it out. Puzzling.
My platys eat the plants and torment the snails. Guppy’s don’t. Guess which I choose?
i have fifty female platys and a giant female veiltale angel in a 75. favorite tank i have ever had. i don't care for male platys so they all got evicted.
That’s cool!
I always found platys to be pretty boring compared to the stunning colors and massive selection of guppies
💛💛💚💚💙💙
make videos on Snails 🙃
my platys do eat my plants
Wouldn't say my Guppies are peaceful. I have a female Sulphur Guppy that is a total bully to the rest of them!!
Not cool!
I have both but looking for something like the platties and guppies. Any advice?
Tiger Limia are cool!
I have guppies, platys, and endlers in a heavily planted 20 high and I love the mix
1 male and 4 female guppies
Your looking for trouble
I had To put them in A pond cause
All they did was make love
I stick to My Neons ,corys,4 female betas
Plecos
Loaches
Chinese sucker fish
I never put these fish in my tank . Even Jesus can’t multiply fish faster than these breeds can 🤣. You go from 4 -a 1000 in a matter of months . And end up With no where to put them and no one wants them . I also don’t like the way the male guppies harass the females it’s relentless and uncomfortable to watch .
I just got my first fish which includes
3 pairs of guppies.
No female usually die off pretty quick as they get bored of life
I started with 2 mollys and soon took 100’s back to the lfs. 😂
What are the floating plants in the tank?
Mostly hornwort
