I can’t believe your videos don’t have more views.....people are really missing out. Not only is it great content but you are a delight to listen to....so relaxing as others have mentioned with just the right amount of chatting. I ordered your book today. I started doing watercolor years ago but as with all hobbies I move on to the next thing before I truly master anything.
I really appreciate that Kathleen, I only started the channel in May so am just starting out. I've loved the feedback so far though and am definitely building an audience. I just love that people such as yourselves are responding so well to it, it gives me the motivation to keep creating! Thank you so much for ordering the book, I really hope you enjoy it!
You're so right Kathleen. I too have only just discovered this channel. I also have painted for years but moved onto other crafts, but watching this lady has renewed my interested as botanical and water colour are my favourites.
Exactly what I need! It's one thing to be a beginner, but when one is a total "virgin" painter, this type of info is invaluable. Thank you and onto your next tutorial for me!
You mention one can have a limited watercolor pallet but I have heard from other artists that if you are doing floral paintings a lot, which I do, that it is best to buy as many colors as you can because once one starts mixing 2 colors together, you are taking away from the beauty of watercolor and keeps going down the more colors one adds to the pile. Landscape painting is a little different but with botanical floral painting, one wants to keep the colors as pure as possible. This was a wonderful tutorial. I have a lot of tubes of paint, even the same color but different brands because sap green in one brand is not as nice from another brand. I am glad I found your channel. You explained everything so nicely.
You can just use some water & either baking soda, borax, or anything with similar grain to clean it and it will give you that nice consistent roughness so your paint will puddle nicely 😊 no need for the scour pad. Just thought I'd help because your 1st tip there was the biggest help to me first starting out! ❤ Love your channel I'm going to watch all of your playlists and every commercial for you. Your colour selection is very nice. Technically the best way to fill such kind of plastic palettes is to place the blobs of colour to the edge of the slanted wells and not at their deeper part. It is supposed that when you place the paints this way, when you wet them the diluted colour runs at the deeper part of the slants. Something that it makes sense but I don't know anyone who is doing that, including myself!! lol But plastic palettes like the one you show on this video are the best for outdoor painting because they have plenty of separated mixing spaces for light or heavier washes, they are lightweight and very flat so it is easy to have them in your bag.

Hello Harriet, I started art classes in Summer 2019, and have a block watercolour tin which I’ve been using. I’ve just prepared one of my plastic palettes. I followed advice from another TH-camr before I saw your prepping advice. I used 0000 wire wool plus rubbing alcohol. Took the shine off a treat.
I received my new palette today and I have added the paint and now I'll let it set to dry. I do love it when I get something new, also I got my miniature brushes today as well. time to paint. You helped in the placement of colors as they are quite the same as my last setup. As long as I know where they are is the key. I enjoy all your videos. You keep it fun and enjoyable. Thanks for all the effort and time you put into making these videos. I appreciate it very much. Darlene
I'm really glad to have found your channel. Your way of teaching is amazingly delightful. As a beginner I find it very helpful and you have made me fall in love with watercolours all over again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! May God bless you! And I hope you and your loved ones are safe in this pandemic. :)
I'm loving to watch you fill your pan and swatch! So glad I found you! I have gotten the 15ml. tubes of color from Daniel Smith, and have a large pan for 36! I just filled it and swatched it as you 've dine here. I do love that many different paints! I have a MIJELLO pan. (Bullet proof glass.)
Wow! I am just now starting out on my Watercolor journey after years with Acrylics, and Colored Pencil. I would have never thought to scruff up the plastic pallet!! I already understand HOW doing so will be of major benefit. Many thanks for all you do.
Hi I just discovered your channel yesterday and I am loving it, I can't stop watching all videos. You're god send I am just beginning watercolor. so happy I found you, and will buy your book.
I bought this pallette and did the prep with glue stick, wire scrubber, and Magic Eraser. I worked. After around 2 painting sessions, the paint no longer sticks to the plastic. I was so excited to finally have a real palette set up. BUT don't use Arteza tubes. They dry out and if you close the lid they fall out into the other colors. I like Arteza for a beginner (which I am) but am going to upgrade because I have tried some of the Winsor Newton paints and love them. They are so much better. Live and learn, but keep painting.
New to water colours as well, seen a few of your delightful videos. I bought a similar folding palette and now I now how to use if properly. Tx so much for sharing this, mine's been cleaned up waiting to fill up with my tube colours and make the reference sample. Your voice is very soothing to listen to. Thanks again. Yvonne
This is wonderful info. I use a small porcelain pallet with 5 wells and then below that is what you use to mix water with the paint or combine two colors. I do not like the heavy porcelain pallet. They are bulky taking up way too much room. So the paints I need for that tutorial is what I put out. I did not fill the round wells up but small portions were put out and then constantly reaching for the tube. I use porcelain because paints do not bead up. But now...I will run out to store and get that wirey silver scrubber and scrub my plastic palette and remove the gloss. I did not even think of preparing a chart to go along with what is in my palette. Thank you so much.
Harriet this is all so helpful but a bit mind-blowing too but in a good way. I had no clue that the paints in the tubes would be that much different to the others. So helpful. Still watching. Thanks so much Harriet. Shirley from Essex.
😱 can’t believe I missed the special on your book. It looks so amazing. I’m in South Africa, the exchange rate is terrible ATM but I’m really eyeing your book.
Jenna Rainey suggested using a glue stick and it works like a charm. No need to scour! I applied the glue, let it dry and then wiped off with a dry paper towel.
I have just found your videos and WOW, what a joy!!! You have such a brilliant way of teaching and so calming and engaging. Love hearing your wisdom and learning things that are important to assist in being more successful in watercolor. This idea of building your own palette was perfect. I had purchased a plastic folding case, though didn't like it for working as the colors all just puddled. Now with the tip of "roughing up" the palette will be easier to bring back out and try again. I have to wonder when one is done with the painted piece, if it could be laminated and put inside the palette. If it get paints on it, you can simply wipe it clean. Just a thought from a total beginner. Thank you for dedicating your time to teaching us. What a pleasure to have found you.
Thankyou so much. I just started watercolor about a month ago and this video is so helpful. Wish I had this when I 1st set up .my palette. Not to late though .
To know which colour is in my palette gave me some headache. I take a picture, add the names in my iPad with Procreate on that photo and print it to have it inside the palette. This is for me the easiest way, colour swatches I do separate:) I love your colour choice:)
Love this!! Thank you, it’s so helpful! Ps. I made the colour chart for my pans a bit smaller than the box, and laminated it so I can keep it in there and it won’t get ruined by paints or by me being my usual clumsy self. Not sure all paints can handle heat? But worth a try maybe. 😊
So I am certainly wishing I had watched this yesterday. Why? Because today I purchased a porcelain butcher’s tray to use as my palette as I was sick of the beading up my paints did on my plastic palette. Now I know to sand trays down. I have never heard that before! Thanks!
I’ve seen these and nearly bought one but instead I bought one of the Meedon 48 tins (they have smaller ones too) from Amazon, a bargain at £16.95, very portable and they are are of a surprisingly good quality. This one of yours looks perfect for keeping costs down when starting out though. A nice find.
Such a lovely (and soothing) video. I use both pans and tubes but seem to like the tubes more and the way you’ve done it looks perfect. I use W&N Cotman but I’m sure the professional versions are better but a bit too expensive for now. I got a case with some pans in loads of colours (can’t remember the name of it) which was very cheap and you’re so right with quality as the paint was awful so it went in the bin quickly! Love your book! 😊
Thanks so much George. I always say buy the best you can afford so cotman does a great job for you right now, I definitely have a few of those tubes somewhere in my set.
Very informative..love your tutorials. I anxiously waiting for my professional paints. I ordered the Winston 24 half pans and a few tubes. I’ve been using the cotman paints…so I am hoping that my work will improve.
How long does it take for the paint to harden in the palette? I just bought this palette just to mix colors in - I thought it was a big mixing tray, but now I can put my tube paints in there and take them with me to class! Brilliant! I've been watching your videos for a couple of months now and I love the way you paint. You're beautiful style! You are an exquisite artist if I may say so. What a gift - thank you for sharing it with us. ;o)
@@deWintonPaperCo Once the paint has hardened, do you just lightly spray it? With all the videos I watch, the paint always looks lovely and gooey. How do I get that effect?
@@alistairfraser8579 if you like gooey, you should try brand watercolors with honey. I find my M Graham watercolors stay that way and are vibrant. I dont carry them around on a travel palette though because they can run if it gets warm out. For that i prefer the Daniel Smith and Schmincke which stay put and you can spray or just activate/re-wet with a drop or two of water.
This is so helpful, wow thanks so much for this is exactly the palette I have been looking for and your demonstrating how to prep it is brilliant. Great information THANK YOU
Greetings from Dallas, Texas! I completely enjoy your videos! I've watched several watercolor tutorials by various instructors and I must say I prefer yours over most. Your voice and accent are quite soothing and pleasant and just the perfect amount of chat. I also like your explanation of techniques as they are very easy to understand. I just bought two of your books and I'm excited to get started! Thank you so much for your inspiration and sharing your knowledge! I would like your opinion if you would kindly. If you had to choose 12 colors (plus or minus) of professional quality watercolor, which would you advise? I prefer to start with the artist quality paints rather than the student set. Much appreciated! :-)
Ah thank you so much! Although I must tell you that you have probably bought the UK and USA versions of the same book. New Botanical Painting is the UK version and the USA publishers decided to give it a title and cover that would appeal to their market. That one is called 'Painting Watercolor Botanicals'. I do have a new book coming out in October called Birds, Bees and Blossoms.
@@deWintonPaperCo Thank you! I was able to cancel the extra order. Looking forward to your new book! Would I be able to find your top 12 pro quality colors in the book?
This was so helpful. I noticed my colors bubbling up together and couldn't figure out why yours was laying flat in a different video. Then I saw this one. What colors did you have under Crimzon Red?
I love these videos, I enjoy just looking at the colours 😁 Prussian blue is my current favourite - the row of Prussian blue mixes on the colour chart I did with your previous tutorial, just makes me so happy. Can't wait to get started on a painting.
How was. the mixing area after the steel wool treatment? I use a magic eraser ,from the store cleaning isle it's less gouging ,it's the plain one not with additive such as bleach ,it can also be used on the paper to correct mistakes, tfs your process.
Please can youlist the colours and brand you used. Your palette is lovely. Please can you do a colour swatch/review of Daler rowney artists watercolours.
Hi Deborah, thanks for your comment. I have updated the notes and here it is for you too. List of paints in my palette: All Daler Rowney unless stated otherwise. Cobalt Violet Permanent Rose Opera Rose Alizarin Crimson Scarlet Lake (Winsor and Newton) Cadmium Red Cadmium Orange Yellow Ochre Cadmium Yellow Lemon Yellow Winsor Lemon (Winsor and Newton) Raw Umber Burnt Umber Burnt Sienna Mars Black Ivory Black (Winsor and Newton) Prussian Blue French Ultramarine Cobalt Blue Deep Cobalt Blue (Winsor and Newton) Transparent Turquoise Cobalt Turquoise Hookers Green Sap Green Green Gold
Thanks...great video. Do you leave the lid open all the time in studio and do you have to let the paints dry when transporting, after painting outdoors?
Hi Harriet, I just bought a palette with 24 wells too. Do you now let your paints dry out and then “ wake them up” or do you have a sealed case? Mine is a sealed case but I wondered if the paints would really stay moist. Thank you as always for your approachable lessons.❤️
Hi there I'm so glad I came across your palette vid it's very informative 👌. For scratching my new palette I used a very fine sandpaper and lightly scuffed the palette well surfaces and it worked great. I actually tried a glue stick which another video suggested but I found it didn't work that good maybe I did it wrong. But the sandpaper suggestion works great!! I'm on to filling in the swatch sheet tonite, thx soo much for ur vids, Love & Light🙏
I seriously need to do one of these swatch cards. I’ve been getting quite frustrated with how much lighter the colours are once the paint dries. I’m very focused on colour matching and am more experienced with Acrylic. So, yes, a swatch card will hopefully save me some time in the long run. Ps. I thought professional range was to do with lightfastness. But I don’t know.
I am so excited to have found you, you are delightful! I am trying to build a palette just like yours, but some of the colors are not available , like Cobalt Violet is only available in Daler Rowney aqua, which is student grade. My question, what brand do you recommend that we buy to replace any that are not available in Daler Rowney. Thank you for your time. Suzie
Hi Suzie, If only I had a short answer to this...different brands have different strengths when it comes to various colours. Winsor and Newton is probably the one I would recommend after daler rowney
I’m getting a new palette tomorrow. It folds and I’m a little concerned that the paints will run into each other when I close it. As you can tell I’m very new at this. I love painting flowers and leaves so between your tutorials and the wonderful book I am making progress. Thank you!
Hi greetings from Thailand aka Lava-land because we're having 45 degrees Celsius these few weeks🥵🥵...thank you so much for your channel. I am trying to start painting now to pass time since my son is already in university. Your channel is really very helpful and interesting. I would like to know if there's any difference in colour if we get them in "Hue"? This is because some of the Winsor & Newton I can get here doesn't have the same colour code as the ones I see from the website. For example Cadmium Yellow 108 and the one I bought is Cadmium Yellow Hue 109. And I see we have got a few colours in "Hue" here. Hope to hear from you and have a wonderful week ahead. Thank you.
Well here’s a tip to do as Harriet says and not as I do. 🤪 I was so excited to get going and I filled my wells before I scuffed up my mixing area😳. I didn’t have quite the right tool so I used a rough emery board and woah…not a good idea! I have deep scratches that catch color and it’s a big fat mess. Oh well not the end of the world I guess…😵💫
Hi really appreciate your teaching style, clear and consise. One question - what do you do with the palette when you’re not painting - do you have to cover the colours before closing the palette?
I am new and looking at buying materials and wondered about the Daler Rowney Aquafine tubes. Those are available in a set with many colors all together, but are they a lesser quality than the Artist tubes?
This was very helpful. Do you prefer plastic over metal? I just ran across your channel and I love your teaching and painting style. It is easy to understand and looks beautiful. Is tube watercolor paint the same as gouache or what is the difference?
This is such a help for me as I’m new to watercolours. Could you identify the two reds after alizarin crimson please? I caught the names of all the others but not those.
Hi Harriet, i Love your videos ☺️ I have one question: i prepared the Surface like you did an now i am afraid to Ruin my brushes… did this happened to you?
Hi Harriet. My level of expertise does not even rise to the level of "virgin" as a previous commenter mentioned. But, at 76, I am determined. Question? Is there a pan set with all the colors that you are using here? I don't want to work with tubes. I see a plethora of pan sets with, sometimes, 48 colors. Do you think your colors would be in any of those? I'm learning so much from you and, in my next order from Amazon (tomorrow), I will be purchasing your book on painting botanicals. Thanks for any and all suggestions and regards from New York City.
Hi Jill, I don’t imagine there is a ready made pan set with every colour I have here but my colours are a fairly standard range so you wouldn’t be far off with a ready made one
Really happy to have found your channel. You are now my favorite watercolor artist💙. I am trying to purchase the Laxley palette using your link. It seems they will not ship to U.S. Any thought on putting this on your website or in your Etsy shop? I’d love to purchase two!
Hi again! After leaving this message, I did find it on Dick Blick website. At least, I think it is the same palette. The picture only showed it closed, wrapped in plastic. I ordered it. Stay tuned. I will let you know. I’m still waiting on the brushes that I ordered from your Etsy shop. Maybe they will arrive at the same time, then I’ll be all set! Enjoying every moment of your TH-cam videos, and looking forward to becoming a Patreon. Thanks so much for the videos, and your response. I do think it’s a good idea for you to consider carrying the palettes, however!
Forgot to say, I love your first book and have added your second one to my next book purchase list. I have seen some negative comments on Amazon from people who purchased two books, saying they were the same book, just different covers. Then, I viewed your video where you said that when books are published in different languages/countries, that will happen. Didn’t know that was a thing! Seems I am not alone. Amazon should put that in the description, to nip those negative comments!
Maybe a dumb question but I'm just starting out in watercolours. What difference does it make if the paint and the water in the wells bobbles up or is it just a personal preference thing? Not trying to be facetious, just curious
@@deWintonPaperCo You said that you rub the pant areas slightly to stop the paint from resting on the surface in bubbles when you are mixing it. I was asking if it makes a difference or if it's just something that you prefer to stop happening? Like I said, I'm not trying to be facetious or offensive in any way by asking you this. I'm just wondering what the purpose of rubbing the paint wells is so I can learn. Thanks
Just came across your channel, thanks for all the inspiration. Had a thought for your palette...you could permanently apply four of those little clear rubber stoppers, sometimes used on doors and drawers.
I tried putting tube watercolour paint(Daniel Smith) in my plastic pallette I bought, and left in 24 - 48hrs like I read, but as soon as I used some water on it it went all gooey in the pallette, but still was fine when I applied it to the watercolour paint. What am I doing wrong. Does it ever go rock hard like pans look? I am an absolute beginner so havent any idea what to expect.
Is the Alizarin Crimson also a Winsor and Newton colour - same branded tube as Scarlet lake. Also is the Cobalt Blue (Green shade)? Sorry, don't know your name. :)
Any particular reason why you did not grade your swatches from darkest to lightest when you made your color chart? I think you are the first artist on TH-cam not to do this. Part of me likes the grading, but I must admit one solid color does have its appeal. Just curious on my part. I might try your way and see how it works for me. One other item, I have just found your site and I really do enjoy watching you paint flowers. You do a great job. Thank you for the videos and instruction.
I just re-did one of my watercolor pallets with each color painted in as a solid color, not graded from dark or light. Then I intend to redo a page with each color blended with the rest of the pallet, but once again I will not grade them from light to dark. This could get interesting.
I bought a similar palette. I did all the prep, filled in half way with my tubes and let it dry overnight. But every time I use it, I cant close it as the wet paint bleeds. I am unable to close the palette at all. Not sure what went wrong ?
I just heard about you from a review on amazon on this palette. I enjoyed your video very much! I am extremely interested in learning watercolor and will defiantly subscribe to your channel! I was wondering if you can close this palette with paint still in it. Probable a dumb question!

I so enjoyed listening to you, such a soothing voice. I learned a lot, and just ordered my pallet to make. Thank you so much for your time.
Have fun!
Wow! I am just now starting out on my Watercolor journey after years with Acrylics, and Colored Pencil. I would have never thought to scruff up the plastic pallet!! I already understand HOW doing so will be of major benefit. Many thanks for all you do.
You’re so welcome, I really hope you enjoy watercolour! I love it!
Hi I just discovered your channel yesterday and I am loving it, I can't stop watching all videos. You're god send I am just beginning watercolor. so happy I found you, and will buy your book.
Ah thank you so much!
Wow thanks so much!
Great channel and video. Loved seeing all the colors next to each other to compare. I also love your style and I'm so excited to follow along. Thanks.
Thanks Corinne!
Yvonne
Ah thanks so much Yvonne!
So excited...after using 3 smaller palettes am excited to set mine up...got my palette from Amazon today..$9.99!!! Love your books too!!!
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you......just by chance, I have just bought this exact palette, so that was really helpful for me.
Glad it was helpful!
Oh Harriet, I just adore you and all of your videos so very much. I do have one book, but must purchase more! You are simply fantastic 🥰
Oh thank you!
So glad this was helpful. In a perfect world I would have this exact palette in porcelain
You're so likable!
Thanks!
Thank you, I was wondering that exact question and low and behold you had a video for it.
Glad it was helpful!
Harriet this is all so helpful but a bit mind-blowing too but in a good way. I had no clue that the paints in the tubes would be that much different to the others. So helpful. Still watching. Thanks so much Harriet. Shirley from Essex.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks!
😱 can’t believe I missed the special on your book. It looks so amazing.
I’m in South Africa, the exchange rate is terrible ATM but I’m really eyeing your book.
Hope you can get yourself a copy
Very helpful thank you. Any idea for how long the paints remain moist with the palette closed please?
They form a hard sheen quite fast
Jenna Rainey suggested using a glue stick and it works like a charm. No need to scour!
I applied the glue, let it dry and then wiped off with a dry paper towel.
Nice tip!
This video is watercolor eye candy 😍!
Thank you so much, I needed this to help me reconize the various colors.
You are so welcome!
Beautiful Palette!!! and very helpful video. Cheers from Chile! :)
Thanks Carolina! I feel way more organised now when I sit down to paint.
Yes that’s a good idea!
Thankyou so much. I just started watercolor about a month ago and this video is so helpful. Wish I had this when I 1st set up .my palette. Not to late though .
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely love your tutorials! 😊 Thank you so much, I’m so pleased I found your channel.👏
You are so welcome!
To know which colour is in my palette gave me some headache. I take a picture, add the names in my iPad with Procreate on that photo and print it to have it inside the palette. This is for me the easiest way, colour swatches I do separate:) I love your colour choice:)
That's a great idea!
Love this!! Thank you, it’s so helpful! Ps. I made the colour chart for my pans a bit smaller than the box, and laminated it so I can keep it in there and it won’t get ruined by paints or by me being my usual clumsy self. Not sure all paints can handle heat? But worth a try maybe. 😊
Sounds great!
This is so helpful. I tend to forget which blue and red I like the best...
Glad it was helpful
Как приятно видеть Ваши работы !!! Спасибо огромное!
Thank you!
So I am certainly wishing I had watched this yesterday. Why? Because today I purchased a porcelain butcher’s tray to use as my palette as I was sick of the beading up my paints did on my plastic palette. Now I know to sand trays down. I have never heard that before! Thanks!
Ah well a ceramic palette is the ideal solution
I’ve seen these and nearly bought one but instead I bought one of the Meedon 48 tins (they have smaller ones too) from Amazon, a bargain at £16.95, very portable and they are are of a surprisingly good quality. This one of yours looks perfect for keeping costs down when starting out though. A nice find.
That's a great find! Thanks so much for the tip!
de Winton Paper Co. They come with all the pans too, in fact mine had fifty two 💃 😁
You are brilliant...lots of really good ideas for learners.
Thanks so much Janet x
Nice one Sue, you won’t regret it!
What a gift - thank you for sharing it with us. ;o)
They form a sheen fairly fast and then fully harden in a few hours.
Great information THANK YOU
I'm so glad it was helpful Craig!
There is a list in the episode notes
I love these videos, I enjoy just looking at the colours 😁
Prussian blue is my current favourite - the row of Prussian blue mixes on the colour chart I did with your previous tutorial, just makes me so happy.
Can't wait to get started on a painting.
Thanks! So glad you’re enjoying painting
How was. the mixing area after the steel wool treatment? I use a magic eraser ,from the store cleaning isle it's less gouging ,it's the plain one not with additive such as bleach ,it can also be used on the paper to correct mistakes, tfs your process.
Nice tip! Thanks
Laughed at the blue tack. So relatable!!!
I was wondering if you could create two little "legs” or nodules using a hot glue gun.
I was thinking I’ve got some sticky dots used for the bottoms of chair legs that might work well but a glue gun would be good tok
Please can youlist the colours and brand you used. Your palette is lovely. Please can you do a colour swatch/review of Daler rowney artists watercolours.

Thanks Cathie. You will find any relevant tutorials in the Watercolour Painting for beginners playlist.
@@deWintonPaperCo thank you! I found it! “Useful color chart”😊
This is a great tutorial regarding pallet organisation - 👍👍😍
Glad it was helpful
Does it take a few days of painting for the surface to be happy even after prepping? Mine still pools after roughing up the surface.
yes
Thanks...great video. Do you leave the lid open all the time in studio and do you have to let the paints dry when transporting, after painting outdoors?
I don’t tend to travel with this one
Hi Harriet, I just bought a palette with 24 wells too. Do you now let your paints dry out and then “ wake them up” or do you have a sealed case? Mine is a sealed case but I wondered if the paints would really stay moist. Thank you as always for your approachable lessons.❤️
Your paints will dry out and be woken up each time in this palette
Great stuff to know, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
So lovely and informative video, Thank you 💝
You are so welcome!
I'm on to filling in the swatch sheet tonite, thx soo much for ur vids,
Love & Light🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Yes it’s also to do with that
I am so excited to have found you, you are delightful!
Thank you!
If they are really wet then yes they will run but you can blot them with some kitchen paper and then they will be fine
You can use a glue stick...apply then wipe with a cloth to clean it off. Works great
Another great method!
what are the brushes you use ? Thank you for all your FAB videos.
Hi Anna I use pro arte brushes and there’s a link to my brushes in my episode notes each time
Hi greetings from Thailand aka Lava-land because we're having 45 degrees Celsius these few weeks🥵🥵...thank you so much for your channel. Thank you.
Hi Amy, I'm not an expert but I do believe there are tiny difference in hue and not hue colours
Ah, it's all trial and error!
Hi really appreciate your teaching style, clear and consise. One question - what do you do with the palette when you’re not painting - do you have to cover the colours before closing the palette?
I just fold the palette shut, the colours, even if a bit wet, stay put x
I am new and looking at buying materials and wondered about the Daler Rowney Aquafine tubes. Those are available in a set with many colors all together, but are they a lesser quality than the Artist tubes?
Hi Kathy, yes aquafine is the lower quality but not bad at all.
This was very helpful. Do you prefer plastic over metal? I just ran across your channel and I love your teaching and painting style. It is easy to understand and looks beautiful. Is tube watercolor paint the same as gouache or what is the difference?
Thanks Marcia. My favourite is ceramic but this plastic palette has worked really well
Thank you so much 💓
You’re welcome!
This is such a help for me as I’m new to watercolours. Could you identify the two reds after alizarin crimson please? I caught the names of all the others but not those.
I’ve listed the colours in the episode notes
@@deWintonPaperCo Found it. Thanks very much.
My instructor adds a few drops to all paint to prep them for use. Do you do that. I need a refresher on that.
You can totally do that. I have a spray but I never remember to before I start filming!
Very very helpful thanks so much
Wonderful!
Hi Harriet, i Love your videos ☺️
I have one question: i prepared the Surface like you did an now i am afraid to Ruin my brushes… did this happened to you?
No it didn’t have any effect on them
@@deWintonPaperCo Thank you. I think that the Winsor Newton Studio Pan set has them. Sells here on Amazon for $75 and I saw it on E-bay for $63.
How would you set up your Transon Large 29-Well Palette and a Mijello Airtight 24-well palette?
I would need to have the palette in front of me to comment
Thanks
But how long it takes the color to dry
Depends on your climate!
This is just the information I was searching for. 2 friends do water colors but don’t use these palettes. They seem much more logical for me.
Ah thanks Bea, yes I like using this palette this way
Really happy to have found your channel. You are now my favorite watercolor artist💙. I am trying to purchase the Laxley palette using your link. It seems they will not ship to U.S. Any thought on putting this on your website or in your Etsy shop? I’d love to purchase two!
Hi, that’s an interesting idea, I will look into it
Hi Colin I’m not sure what you mean?
@@deWintonPaperCo You said that you rub the pant areas slightly to stop the paint from resting on the surface in bubbles when you are mixing it. I was asking if it makes a difference or if it's just something that you prefer to stop happening? Like I said, I'm not trying to be facetious or offensive in any way by asking you this. I'm just wondering what the purpose of rubbing the paint wells is so I can learn. Thanks
Which costs less? A pan “brick” or tube put it and hardened?
They both have a range of value and quality so you can find the one to suit your budget
Just came across your channel, thanks for all the inspiration. Had a thought for your palette...you could permanently apply four of those little clear rubber stoppers, sometimes used on doors and drawers.
Great idea!!
can i ask you if you’ve used the permanent rose from daler rowney as well? do you prefer the winsor and newton to it?
I’ll have to try
I tried putting tube watercolour paint(Daniel Smith) in my plastic pallette I bought, and left in 24 - 48hrs like I read, but as soon as I used some water on it it went all gooey in the pallette, but still was fine when I applied it to the watercolour paint. What am I doing wrong. Does it ever go rock hard like pans look? I am an absolute beginner so havent any idea what to expect.
I think dont worry too much. They're always going to soften whenever you use them but they'll dry again.
Lovely 😍
Thanks!
Is the Alizarin Crimson also a Winsor and Newton colour - same branded tube as Scarlet lake. Also is the Cobalt Blue (Green shade)? Sorry, don't know your name. :)
It is a winsor and newton colour.
The last time I use that palette, all my colors fell out of the small wells. Will scratching the small wells keep this from happening?
I’ve never had that happen
@@deWintonPaperCo could it maybe happen if the environment gets too dry (less than 10% humidity)?
Any particular reason why you did not grade your swatches from darkest to lightest when you made your color chart? I think you are the first artist on TH-cam not to do this. Part of me likes the grading, but I must admit one solid color does have its appeal. Just curious on my part. I might try your way and see how it works for me. One other item, I have just found your site and I really do enjoy watching you paint flowers. You do a great job. Thank you for the videos and instruction.
It’s just my personal choice. I’m self taught and like to go with my instincts
Thanks so much for your comment though and I’m so glad you’re enjoying watching!
I wait for a little while until the paint has hardened a bit before closing
I just heard about you from a review on amazon on this palette. I enjoyed your video very much! I am extremely interested in learning watercolor and will defiantly subscribe to your channel! I was wondering if you can close this palette with paint still in it. Probable a dumb question!
Hi Christi, thank you so much! Yes you can still close the palette
No neutral tint or quin magenta?
Not for me but these aren’t Daniel smith colours
i want to purchase this palette but i’m worried if the dried paints would fall and mess up
It hasn’t happened to me
de Winton Paper Co. nice to know! thank you for replying!
You can find the list of colours named in the episode notes!
Nice!
