The BEST Pencil to Sketch Under Watercolour - Materials Test
Watercolour for Beginners episode 8: The BEST Pencil to Sketch Under Watercolour - Materials Test
I get asked all the time how best to balance sketching in pencil and then being able to rub it out afterwards. I've pondered the question and come up with this test of what I consider to be a really good range of options for pencils. Whether you prefer to be able to see your pencil sketch throughout the painting and want to rub it out afterwards, or you want the pencil to dissolve as you paint, this has all the answers!
If you've loved learning with me and want to enjoy a more interactive and tailored watercolour experience, join my Patreon (bit.ly/2EWJIGL) to become part of my watercolour community. This was a very informative test. I checked on Amazon US and they sell both pencils. The Faber Castell pencils (pack of 6) cost $2.99 and one Derwent mountain grey watercolor pencil costs $16.00. Quite a difference. Thanks for your great teaching style.
I normally use an HB or on occasion a 2B graphite pencil for my watercolor sketches. I try to use the lightest line I can get away with and still be able to see the line. I do occasionally use watercolor pencils, but I try to use a color that will closely match the area to be watercolored when actually coloring the picture. The watercolor pencil will dissolve and blend in with the watercolor paint and thus not leave a line that may need to be removed. I do like your presentation. You have a good way to make an artist think about the proper tool to use when sketching, especially if one intends to paint over the sketch later on.
Thanks Robert!
The best demonstration of the differences in simple graphite pencils I've seen yet. Thank you for sharing this; this time I think I'll remember the grades next time I need pencils! Cheers!
Thanks so much Barb!

Thanks! I know this is an old video but as newbie ... I am starting at the beginning and very much appreciate all of this information.
You are so welcome!
Me too! I’m amazed that you can remove pencil without (noticeably) removing the watercolor on top of it!
This was a lovely teaching. I really appreciated you taking the time to share this with us. Your content has been brilliant. I keep learning so much. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. You being self taught, seems to have leant to some very good learnings, taking your personal experience and being so willing to share. You definitely have the 🧡 of a teacher.

I love your teaching style. Very patient and informative. I have learnt so much from your teachings. Thankyou.
Thank you so much Karen, happy painting!
Thanks Harriet, that was extremely informative. I think I’d enjoy using the Faber Castel HB aquarelle pencil slightly more than the standard as I occasionally have a problem keeping my sketches very light due to neurological issues affecting how my hands work, so I would hope that the Faber Castel would help balance that issue out, with the least rubbing out. Thanks again! I’m proud to be a Patreon 🎨👩🎨😻
Ah wonderful Anita. I’m so glad this was helpful

Nice!
Thank you so much for your intensive review. As a result, I have ordered the Faber Castell Aquarelle HB. Hopefully this will solve my pencil line views under my watercolours, not the best look!
Gerald, Hampshire
Hope you enjoy it!
Wow, who knew the vast difference a simple thing as a pencil could make! Thank you for this, I will be trying some different pencils now :)

Thanks Amanda!
Great video, thank you
You are welcome!
This Is an amazing video. I’ve always wondered “what is HB”? Super super helpful. Fantastic work and Thank you 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful video! Thank you for doing this! It really helped me!
So glad it was helpful
The regular graphite HB, which I use 😊, and the Graphite Aquarelle by Faber Castell, which I purchased but have not put it to the test myself, are my favorites. Thank you for demonstrating a variety of pencils and how they react under different techniques, it is very helpful, as well as, reassuring. I totally agree that the B ones do smudge and can make your colors mirky. i found out by "trial and error"! Your study was precisely the perfect way ☺.
Fantastic, so glad it was helpful
Very useful information, probably stick with the HB pencil. But would definitely get a water soluble to try.
Yeah sounds like a good idea!
That was very interesting.
To know more about pencils. Thanks a lot.
No worries Yasmin!
Wonderful lesson! Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Wonderful presentation, enjoyed your demonstration 😊
Thanks Joan!

Great, so glad I can help Ginger!
wonderful lesson for me, I needed this info. Bravo!
Thanks Noreen!
Great information. I was completely confused about which pencils to try and this was the best explanation as well as demonstration. I'm just getting started learning watercolor and appreciate having this info. Thank you!!
So pleased it’s helpful!
Very interesting thank you
So glad!
This is such a good video! Very educational and extremely helpful for me personally 😃
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this experiment!! This was so helpful. I recently purchased an H9 pencil at the advice of the art store clerk. She thought with the harder lead it would easily make a light line. It did, but even with light pressure it made a groove in the paper! Not good at all. I’m going to try the faber castel water soluble pencil. I also have a faber castel kneaded eraser, but purchased another brand... the FB was so much nicer!
Great!
Thank you for your video. This is definitely helpful for me. Love all your tutorials! 💕
So glad!
Very helpful
So glad!
Thank you so much! Really good advice!
You’re so welcome!
Very interesting, thank you, things like this you need to know x
Yes I hope it’s helpful
This was very informative, thank you. I've just ordered your book (American version) and I can't wait to get it.
Ah thanks Maria!
Really helpful video Harriet, thank you! I’m just getting used to watercolours again (had to use them previously for fashion illustration) and your videos have been super helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
This was so interesting, thank you. It's made me much more aware of just what pencil I've picked up to use. Very impressed with your eraser as I'm apt to wreck the paper surface with my conventional one. 🙂
So glad it’s helpful!
This is so helpful
Thank you! Great info!!💕
Glad it was helpful!
That was helpful. Thank you.
Ah I’m so pleased, thanks Janice
Logical/informative/practical. Go good old HB, still the one. New fangdangle, who needs them only those trying to impress or haven't seen this video. I'll stick with the original. Thanks Harriet.
Great stuff Simon!
Thank you!
Thanks so much Dalia!
This was such a good idea. Thank you so much! 🙂
Thanks Elizabeth!
Great demonstration! I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on using the graphite tracing paper that you can trace your picture onto the watercolor paper.
Great suggestion!
Very helpful and interesting test, thank you so much 🙏 I am wondering if different sorts of watercolor paper would make a difference in rubbing it out or the solubility?
Yes It will make a difference too
I have the set of watercolor pencils and love them but for drawing my watercolor sketches, I’ve been using regular (non water-soluble) colored pencils in the lightest value of whatever color I’ll be painting
Fantastic!
I've always heard you can't remove pencil markings once you've painted over them. Thank you for the informative demonstration!
Yes it can be done!
Exelente!!! 🌟
Thank you!
The best demonstration of breaking pencil tips! 😂
Glad it was helpful!
danke !
Thanks!
Wonderful video and very informative! You are a wonderful teacher! I'd love to see a video on how you paint peonies! Also, could you link the eraser you use? Thank you!
I have a peony project in my book! I’ll update the episode notes and add a link for the rubber soon
I love your watercolor animals, could you please do an elephant ?🐘♥️
Great suggestion!
Harriet, would you consider doing a peony? Thanks for all the videos!
I have a peony in the book so I try to focus on new things but I’m sure they will feature in some way when peony season begins
This was so helpful! Would you be able to use a normal eraser (like your standard pencilcase staedtler one) to get the same effect of erasing the light pencil marks once paint is dry? X
I think so!
Ah the good old HB wins the day for me! Will all watercolour shades let you lift off a light HB or are some better than others?
I’ve only investigated these shades so you’d have to have a look
what about using "watercolor pencil" in appropriate color to sketch?
Yes you could do that if you wanted.
So interesting! Do you think the soluble HB would rub out if it hadn’t fully dissolved?
hmm I'm not sure! Will have to try !
I use an HB mostly, but I have trouble erasing it when it's been painted over. I also have the FaberCastel soluble HB but haven't been using it because of the issue of it disappearing too soon. How do you get your HB to erase so well? Any special trick you didn't show?
All my techniques are in this video. The thing I would stress is to draw lightly in the first place
What sharpener do you use to get these so sharp? Please don’t tell me you hand chisel them. 😀
I use something called a 'long point sharpener'
I might have missed it, but is the eraser a key component?
To a certain extent but this was more focussing on the range of pencil options.
