- The Papuan Pitta had recently been split from the Red-bellied Pitta complex. This species migrates from PNG around November each year to reach the Northern areas of Cape York Peninsular. They build a nest on the ground, often in the buttress roots of a tree. They are a stunning bird when seen closely. To achieve, this close encounter, I built a small hide and had to spend many hours in extremely humid conditions. The bonus was to get the bird calling. I filmed these sequences in January 2019. In hindsight, I wish I had purchased my full frame Camera as this camera did struggle with the low light conditions. Tim Siggs. ABVC.

Awesome footage of a little beauty. Thanks for sharing your work Tim. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Jan. It makes me want to return but that could be said of many Aussie locations.
What an amazing beauty! Thanks for sharing this, otherwise I'd never have had the chance to admire.
Glad you enjoyed it! They are probably in the top 10 most stunning birds in Australia.
@@TimSiggs Admire the effort you put in to film this. I can imagine how difficult it was, so I'm really appreciative of being able to admire this outstanding bird.

Hi Tim I really liked this video. I heard a Chestnut breasted cuckoo calling in the background towards the end of the video in amongst the usual suspects. Did you by chance obtain the female call?
Yes, plenty of CB Cuckoo's up there and I managed to video one calling. No female Pittas calling though. I appreciate your support.
@@TimSiggs Thanks Tim. I have much experience with this species at the Lockerbie Scrub at the Tip including the female calling. I have not seen anyone film this as yet and recordings are scant. The male calling in your video shows the best example on film of the so-called Parson's Collar which is exacerbated during calls I have seen. Kudos.
@@robreed6822 Hi Rob. Thus sequence took a bit of work but I was pleased to come away with the sequence. They are a stunner.I have only visited the Cape twice in 20 years. This time ( 2018 ) I came away with Ross River Virus and it has knocked me for 6!! Still plan on returning one day.
What part of cape York was this filmed?
Iron Range National Park Rob.
