- Nusa Penida is an island located near the southeastern coast of Bali, Indonesia, forming part of the Klungkung Regency along with the neighboring small island of Nusa Lembongan and twelve even smaller islands. Separated from Bali by the Badung Strait, Nusa Penida is known for its hilly interior, reaching a maximum altitude of 524 meters, and a drier climate compared to Bali. The island spans an area of 209.41 km² and had a population of approximately 59,900 as of mid-2022. It is a significant tourist destination among the three Nusa islands, offering a variety of attractions.
Nusa Penida and its neighboring islands, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, have been designated as a bird sanctuary, initiated by the Friends of the National Parks Foundation. This sanctuary was established through traditional Balinese village regulations, aiming to protect various Indonesian bird species, including the critically endangered Bali starling. The conservation efforts have seen success, notably increasing the population of the Bali starling from less than 10 in 2005 to over 100 by 2009.
The island boasts several points of interest for tourists, including Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel Billabong, Crystal Bay, Atuh Beach, Diamond Beach, Suwehan Beach, Peguyangan Waterfall, Tembeling Forest, and Segening Waterfall. Additionally, Nusa Penida is a popular diving destination, with sites like Penida Bay, Manta Point, and Malibu Point, offering diverse marine life and coral ecosystems. The tidal streams around the island vary with the monsoon seasons, influencing diving conditions and marine biodiversity.
