@Penny Young I think that was the government`s plan. They wanted to get rid of him. (Elvis was lucky, he didn`t involve politics in his repertoire. Otherwise, they would have assassinated him just like John Lennon). But as so often in life, these manipulations don`t always turn out as planned. The fact is that before the army he had been hated by the older generations. After he had joined the army, even the older generations began respecting him for that. In addition, he sang with Sinatra and also released songs like It`s Now Or Never, and by then he was almost everybody`s darling. Well, at least he wasn`t feared and hated as before. He could have used his celebrity status but he wanted to serve his country. I think it was good for his career, and because the Colonel had predicted that serving in the army would lift his popularity, even more, he had convinced Elvis to join. I am a pacifist but Lord this man looked like a million-dollar button in his uniform... I know, I am a hypocrite. But what can I say? SEPH, I've already been beaten to.making a couple points about "It's Now or Never". Yes, the melody was taken from an early 1900s aria; the lyrics that ELVIS sung was adapted. The original had been sung by legends as Mario Lanza and Caruso, to name a couple I'm familiar with. While in my music class and lesson, ELVIS came up in the conversation, since I was in the process of finalizing points for my research paper on Elvis, and his impact on the music industry. My voice teacher sat down at the Steinway piano and started singing "O Sole Mio". One fun fact, "It's Now Or Never" went to #1 in 1960 in the UK; and it also went to #1 in 2005 with it's re-release. Seph, now the ELVIS Train has picked up speed going ever faster. (BTW, when the train arrives in the year 1976, ELVIS redoes this song, live, on December 31st, at Las Vegas, with his back-up tenor preambling "O Sole Mio".)
Basically, what He's saying is that He loves Her so much, and if He can't have Her now, then He's gonna have to bounce, because He knows it'll hurt way too much seeing Her around, knowing he'll never have her! I could be wrong, but that's how I've always interpreted it! 🫡

(I remember someone saying that Elvis didn't make a dime off of it because of international copyrights. But I've no idea if that's true or not. I never researched that.) So diving in: "There's No Tomorrow" was recorded by Tony Martin in 1949 and was inspired by an older Neapolitan song "O Sole Mio"- written in 1898 by Giovanni Capurro (lyricist) and Eduardo di Capua and Alfedo Mazzucchi (composers). "O Sole Mio" translates as "my sun" or "my sunshine". No one knows for sure if Elvis first heard Tony Martin's recording "There's No Tomorrow" while stationed in Germany (on Wikipedia they put this as a definite but having done more research on my own it's not AS definite as all that) or if Elvis first heard Mario Lanza's version of "O Sole Mio". Elvis drew inspiration from many different singers of many different genres. Mario Lanza was an Italian- American opera singer and actor. One of Elvis's favorite movies growing up was a film starring Mario Lanza called "The Student Prince". Anyway, the story goes that upon hearing either of the two songs mentioned above, Elvis immediately fell in love with it and wanted to record his own version. @@lechat8533 In my past research for a University term paper, I recall these allegations. But, at that time the sources I found did not seem credible; e.g. National Enquirer types of stories. I do think Sir Paul McCartney has given more recent interviews on television, and Paul seemed to have a very positive or heroic impression of their meeting with ELVIS. Something also that may have generated rumours, is that ELVIS had permission from their record company to perform some of the Beatles songs in concert; "Hey Jude"; and "Something", come to mind.
@lechat8533. It is nice to find positive comments regarding ELVIS, arising from many celebrities. Among them I would point to 'Led Zeppelin', a historic international Rock Group whose impact on the evolution of music is legendary. There are televised interviews where the band member(s) talk about the memorable time when they met ELVIS. By specifically mentioning 'Led Zeppelin' I would find their status in the annals of Rock & Roll history equal to, or surpassing the Beatles.
Yet another cracker Seph - keep them coming my friend. There are some songs which in any location throughout the world, you can mention and people immediately recognise the song and with whom it is associated. 'It's Now or Never' and Elvis Presley is one such example which is both his second best selling single and one of the best selling of all time. The original studio master was recorded in RCA's Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee on 3 April 1960, and was just the ninth song he recorded after returning to civilian life from the army. An article published in the NY Times suggests that having heard Tony Martin's rendition of 'There's No Tomorrow', a song based on Italian standard 'O Sole Mio', whilst stationed in Germany, Elvis decided he would also like to record a song based around that melody. Having pitched the idea to his music publisher Freddy Bienstock, he returned to his New York office with the intention of finding some songwriters to develop Elvis' idea, a task that Bienstock had been successful in many times previously. On his return to New York, he found that the only songwriters in proximity were Aaron Schroeder and Wally Gold, and just half an hour after being given the task of doing so had written the lyrics to 'It's Now or Never'. These quickly written lyrics would give Elvis a song which would reach the top of charts throughout the world! In 1960, "It's Now or Never" was a number-one record in the U.S., spending five weeks at number one and the U.K., where it spent eight weeks at the top in 1960 and an additional week at number one in 2005 as a re-issue, and numerous other countries, selling in excess of 25 million copies worldwide, Elvis Presley's biggest international single ever. It's British release was delayed for some time because of rights issues, allowing the song to build up massive advance orders and to enter the UK Singles Chart at number one, a very rare occurrence at the time.
