Hey everyone, I wanted to mention a few other details. You may have noticed how modern our furniture is - this will change in time. Our last house was considerably newer. Also, the house was painted grey before we moved in, we are working on changing that as I go room-to-room sanding down the walls and making them smooth again.

Love the house Ken ! Thankfully the floors weren’t screwed with lol ,also I wouldn’t be surprised after seeing that door, might be chestnut instead of oak, very common in that era.

Thank you. I cannot believe the number of houses in my neighborhood that have been trashed by developers. They call it gentrification. I call it slummification. Cheap work, bad design. In 20 years it's just going to be a mess. Thank you for doing this. It takes some interest and some respect for the integrety of the design of a building.

New reno works use sub mass produced materials that will disintegrate in only a few years, they only look good brand new.

Yea people can barely afford homes as it is, and buying stuff that was made cheap is just going to result in things needing to be fixed sooner and more frequently. Quality is only for the wealthy now, everyone else is either getting cheap or expensive crap.

Same thing going on in my neighbourhood. There's this one house beautiful 1915 home for sale. Its been totally gutted with no original charm or character left. Cheap and basic looking fixtures, awkward wall and ceiling cut outs, no more wood work, only the dinkiest thinest baseboards and trim. GRAY FLOORS!!! A really sad looking flip house. And way over priced. The only "good" thing about it is that it's been sitting on the market for over 100+ days.

  • @louiseclarkashburn6664

I owned a 1920’s era house that had similar “modernization” work done on it. Cheap plywood boarded up the old fireplace wall, including the matched pair of windows on each side, like yours. The ceiling in the dining room had large cracks and a poorly built bookcase was bolted into one corner. I spent hours bending over the top of a ladder, reaming out the cracks with a can opener and then filling them with plaster and sanding them down. We removed the bookcase and old carpeting to reveal lovely hardwood floors and found a lovely patterned glass chandelier from the same period as the house to install where a modern one had been placed. There were so many other projects we took on but but by bit we worked on returning the house to its former glory. I wish now we had kept it but we moved on. It’s such an act of love to restore these beauties!

Ken and Dalton I just loved this video. This one had my ears more than any other. If the walls of your Arts & Crafts home could talk, they would sigh with happiness that you are restoring the soul of the home, after so long. Yes, please post restoration videos.
the conservatory in the back sounds so intriguing. I can't wait to see what you design.

I can't believe someone would just throw a Tiffany chandelier into a dumpster. That's a mind-blowing level of ignorance! It's very likely that there was a fireplace originally in that living room for heat purposes. Fireplaces get removed all the time because flippers don't want to deal with them. It's a good thing the house is in your hands now and you'll be able to restore it to its former glory. Thanks for sharing! And P.S. - I hope you share updates!

Oh my! THEY THREW OUT A TIFFANY LAMP?!?!?!?!?! I hate developers with a passion. I love old houses too, and in Winnipeg where I live there are plenty to choose from but so many have been messed up by developers and flippers. I was so lucky to find the 1933 house that I purchased three years ago...almost all of the original features are intact and the gorgeous oak millwork on the main floor has never been painted. It even has all of the original doors and hardware.
It's nice to finally put a face to the voice, and I love what you and your partner are planning for your home. Seeing your kitties in the background was an added bonus! I look forward to seeing updates as your work progresses.

Really glad that you’re returning it to it’s former form without compromising it too much. I live in the uk and have never even been to the US at all but your videos are amazing and have made me look into way more into historic American Architecture to an extent I didn’t before and that’s a true testimony to both of you. I would like to know what is your favourite building which you have previously covered?

      @ThisHouse  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Fantastic question! It is really hard to pick a favorite, but the house that most recently made my top ten list is Drayton Hall.

Ken I absolutely love your videos. As a history and architecture buff I so look forward to your videos. I live in NYC and am fascinated with all your meticulous research - it’s a shame this city is so quick to tear down its history. I was thrilled to watch the video on your own home and to see your partner. I hope you post more videos on the evolution of your home. Although I’m not a fan of arts and crafts style, I greatly appreciate your dedication to bringing your home back to its glory days. I wish you and your partner all the best in this journey and do hope you show us the evolution as it unfolds.

The format with you in the video is great! Seeing your new home and learning about your plans is perfect since we recently purchased a 1914 home, similar to your new home! Although we are working with a "period decorator", hearing your ideas really helps! We have some very similar situations as you described and about to take on a small addition that will also incormporate building out the basement too. As your plans happen, it would be great to see updates as you go! BTW, the home we purchased, like yours at first, was not even close to what we invisioned but really glad we did the purchase! Thank you

Thanks to you and Dalton for sharing your home with us. It has great bones and the perfect new owners to bring it back to it's former Arts & Crafts glory. I have no doubt the house is very happy you are there! I look forward to seeing updates as your plans come to fruition, and will be curious to see which William Morris wallpaper you select for the bedroom, as his designs have always been a favorite of mine.

I honestly gasped when you pulled off that VELCROED piece of wood 😆 I've never seen that as an installation method. Ever. Even back when I was in high school and building play production sets, we still used a hammer and nails. To think someone couldn't be bothered with THE most basic carpentry skill... Always amazes me the levels of corner-cutting some builders / developers will go to 🤦‍♀

I love this so 💗 As the owner of a 1931 "kit house" that some guy rudely added a poorly-constructed addition to in ~ 2000, I appreciate deeply your "but whyyyy" struggles. From the "what did this snubbed off gas line used to light?" to the original crystal door knob I found in the yard, unraveling the mysteries is endlessly fascinating (and, at times, frustrating lol). I would totally watch your transformation videos with the same rapt attention with which I watch your other content :) Thank you for inviting us into your home!

The house looks great the way it is. Just do ONE project at a time and then move on to the next project. Don't fall into the trap a lot of people do where they rip apart the whole house and then run out of energy, enthusiasm or money and give up.
