      The pig is symbolic of greed and humanity's willingness to do anything, even unspeakable things for money.
      The butcher part of it, represents the way the medical community (especially the mental health community) treats its patients with regard to the pig, and their willingness to remain complacent with the status quo diagnosis.
      Who cares how much you suffer?
      I got paid and you got pills. So big pharma got their pinch.

    Ren was misdiagnosed with depression and bipolar disorder for over a decade. He endured years of suffering horribly while being gaslit by the medical community who failed to diagnose him and told him that it was his mind making him sick. Ren developed stress induced psychosis and PTSD. Eventually, a doctor in Belgium correctly determined that Ren had Lyme disease. By this time, he had organ damage as well as brain damage. In America, Ren received an experimental stem cell transplant that saved his life. He just spent the last year and a half living in Canada receiving further treatment.

    My interpretation of the pig is GREED. The pig is a common theme in his Sick Boi album. He makes an appearance in several of his videos. In some videos the pig is REN’s accomplice and in others he’s fighting him. Just depends which side of pendulum he’s on. Again this is just my own interpretation. Thank you for sharing your backstory. It explains why your reactions are so educational and detailed. I really am enjoying your channel. ❤

    I have been down the Ren rabbit hole for a week now. He has became my absolute favorite artist since discovering him. I have an auto immune disease that the doctors have yet to diagnose at three years in. It was to the point I was unable to walk and the constant horrendous pain I was in 24-7 nearly broke me. I have two young children aged 4 and 5 when it began. They are what made me fight and never give up. Its just a mixture of meds they keep changing and putting me on to keep it at bay. The doctors call me a medical mystery. Also, My son was also diagnosed with Lyme disease but it took two years for him to be diagnosed correctly.he was only five years old when the symptoms started the show. Watching my son go through it was the absolute most heartbreaking time of my life. Ren's lyrics and story Tell ng, the messages in his art is unmatched. ,

      Same, you know what fixed the pain that almost took my life? Pain I tolerated for more than 20 years, pain that wouldnt let me sleep. HRT! it took going through menopause and really ramping up the utter WTH never ending list of pains that pain meds dont touch. For the first time since I was 26 I am pain free and I'm 52 now. Womens health is way under explored, and no where enough research is undertaken around what hormone fluctuation does to inflammation. Officially I was finally diagnosed with Fibromyalgia after a virus, however, I'm wondering now if the virus just ruined my endocrine system and ability to produce hormones correctly at the right levels, cause I'm fine now and it literally took one week on HRT and I've never looked back. I'll take my risk with whatever they say HRT may couse cause the alternative? I wasnt living I was existing, and even then only just! I had elevated way elevated blood inflammation and pain markers for 20 years, now? All normal.

  • @toria-j
    @toria-j 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

    Wow - what an interesting and varied background.
    I think the left-wanting-more feeling is caused by Ren swerving the traditional song structure, which includes finishing on the chorus (he does this in Dominoes too, and it adds to the message), or not even having a chorus when it's expected.
    The pig butcher? It's whatever you interpret it as. IIRC, Ren has said it represents his pain, his experiences of allopathic medicine, and capitalism. There's also links to Orwell (Animal Farm) and other literature.
    The sample is 'Bre, Petrunko', sung by the Koutev Bulgarian National Ensemble - it's worth listening to by itself. Ren bought the beat from Beatstars/Kujobeats, but after he received the sound files, he also did a lot of work in rebalancing the elements (can't remember the tech word) and basically produced it again. The beat is killer, but this is after Ren's skills, and it seems to be an outlier in Kujo's body of work. I do wonder why that is...

    • @TimWelchVocalStudio
      @TimWelchVocalStudio  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

  • @richardfield6801
    @richardfield6801 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +40

    Ren has made several comments about the pig mask in different interviews. He has indicated recently that it makes reference to greed. This makes sense in terms of "Kujo beat down" but also resonates with the 'declaration' from Orwell's Animal Farm, written on the wall in 'Animal Flow'). He has also indicated that in some ways it represents to him his illness, which being familiar, has become, in some ambiguous sense, almost a friend. I suspect that as he uses it in his videos, its meaning changes and evolves even for him. He seems quite comfortable with ambiguity. He doesn't like to be too specific and mostly leaves it down to his audience to decide.

    • @richardfield6801
      @richardfield6801 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@karenkruger3690 Hi Karen. I'm not sure what I think about that. The desire to know what things mean and to fit images into neat slots is very tempting. There is a big part of me, though, that hopes he doesn't reveal anything. The reverse side of clarity is fixity, and once you fix the meaning of a sensory image it becomes a symbol. It is a dead thing and you no longer have to experience it. It's possible that even Ren doesn't fully know what Mr pig meant to him in each of his vids. Images emerge from the unconscious and only later do we try to fix and ascribe meaning to them. I wonder if Ren is conflicted about this himself.

    • @karenkruger3690
      @karenkruger3690 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    What I love most about the song is the way Ren uses his own illness to diagnose social ills. And it's not like he's reaching. He hits the nail right on the head. The social and systemic problems he talks about have very specific consequences, and those consequences will always most severely affect the disenfranchised, like those struggling with mental and physical health.
    If the systemic and social problems were properly addressed, Ren and others like him would never have had to suffer the way they have/do.

    I find it really interesting the the beat is so loud, in the beginning, so it almost drowns out the psychiatrist's voice. I've heard it likened to the noise in your head that makes is hard to concentrate on reality. Also, the table is wobbley. It's unstable. So when he sits down, and he's twitchy while trying to light his cigarette, the table is wobbling, and that expresses the situation. He feels unstable while the psychiatrist is essentially trying to tell him "There's nothing physically wrong with you."

    I think from what Ive seen it took a long time for Ren to get the diagnosis of Lyme disease. 8-9years or so. During that time his pain was so severe he was bedridden sometimes up to 23h a day. He was told he was bi polar and put on drugs for it which had even more side affects. He went through so many different types of treatments googling just trying to figure out what he had and he was the one driving that force where he felt not heard by the medical community who just kept saying it’s in Your head. It was so bad he often had suicidal thoughts but he kept fighting. This song represents the frustration he felt throughout this process where he didn’t feel like he was getting help. And the pig mask represents that or greed (in other videos).

  • @LinMonash
    @LinMonash 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Good to see you catch up with immediately checking out Sick Boi as soon as it came back up. Ren did all the production. All the doubling, casting, set, everything.
    Everything Ren does is micro-intentional. Every move sound & beats between is worked out to the microsecond. He's an absolutely brilliant producer as well as every other element of his huge creative talent & toolkit. And you're right; it's his highly innovative synthesis of everything that makes him more than. Worthy of that overused term; GENIUS.
    A simply GREAT Unpack of Rens work.
    Well done. Best I've seen.
    Meanwhile; the Pig Mask. It's morphed in his later works, but here, (& as a mental health clinician with over 30 years experience, including in & out of acute care psychiatric & community care settings,) I know precisely what this represents. I have no doubt as Ren was experiencing episodic psychotic states [ as he portrays in Hi Ren ] , he saw those who weren't helping him , and in his helpless state as having literal power of life and death over him- as murderous pigs.
    There are a lot of very caring, well-intentioned, and very hard-working people in this sector who do enormous good. There are also people who abuse their power over the extremely vulnerable, as well as those who are just burnt out and simply don't care. The services are vastly underfunded and patchwork, with some sections still stuck back in previous decades.
    So Ren is right, the sector has blood on its hands. People are misdiagnosed, leading to wrong treatments. People are discharged from care when still unwell and at risk. Partly that's to do with pressures on bed state, also few community case workers, homelessness post-discharge, so many factors. But also, to do with people having revolving door transiting through these systems, learning what to say to get away and escape scrutiny.
    And then; the Big One; the MASSIVE increase in Drug Induced Psychosis [ DIP ] flooding the system. With so many synthetic drugs on the market now, and more & new combinations emerging every day, it's imposssible for the services to keep up. These substances alter the brain in complex and often cumulative and, sadly, permanent ways. It is no longer possible to identify a cluster of symptoms as indicative of a DIP related to a specific drug. Further complicated by poly-substance use.
    So when a young guy, who is also a Muso, turns up to a Psych unit with a psychosis, what do you think the immediate/ initial assumption and diagnosis is going to be? And 1st diagnoses, unfortunately, tend to stick.
    As for Lyme Disease not being well understood, if that's the case in the US and the UK, imagine how much harder here in Australia- where these ticks don't exist! But Aussies are mad travellers and love going hiking and camping, so there MUST be heaps of misdiagnosed cases here as well!
    Ren, by shining a spotlight on his whole experience here, is raising awareness of all of these layers and, I have no doubt, is going to save lives.
    Yet another reason why I'm a huge fan. ❤

One of his favourite books is Animal Farm (George Orwell) it runs through a fair bit of his music as in "Animal Flow” worth a look! when Ren was undiagnosed for 7/8 yrs he referred to the doctors as pigs. Ren I think has an appreciation of all different styles from classical, choral, folk, rock etc - as well of Hip Hop and Rap naturally. I see two eclectic spirits here. Thanks for the commentary - helped me see and hear things I had missed - and only increased by appreciation and understanding of the song. I cannot imagine what it must be like to be the centre of so much attention and the impact it can have - and what support such a person would need to stay grounded. It looks like Ren has good people around him - and he seems wise for his years and experiences. I want to hear all the different sides and expressions from this artist - as he has something interesting and important to say in his lyrics about the human condition and uses his voice well. Anyway, I look forward to hearing more from your back catalogue soon.

    Another engaging breakdown. I really enjoy your style of playing the track through and then going through it again in depth. The details are very helpful to pushing me to listen even more closely to what Ren has created. The intricacies are really beyond next level. Ren blames his ADHD for his attention to tiny details and perfectionism. I believe he’s a master poet and a musical savant. I’ve listened to so much of his work and it’s all multifaceted lyrically and musically. I will have to relisten to a lot of these tracks with both earbuds in. I have to keep one ear open for safety unless I’m home. I have done multiple listens to Seven Sins w a set of noise canceling headphones. It’s spectacular. He blends so many variations of musical styles into one piece, and it works. Seven Sins in stereo was when I noticed the panning, crazy layering of Ren singing in different pitches and doubling. Now I have terms to go with the kaleidoscope of sounds. Thanks Tim for sharing some small clips of your own creative journey, you have talent and experience to back up your discussions of these tracks. Another nod to the depth of your life experiences, is in your breakdown of the emotion in Ren’s voice and tone and duality of his inner personality aspects trying to express themselves and how Ren allows those inner selves to come through. Renegades are an eclectic mix. See how beautifully we blend together in support, kindness, compassion. Each of us connects and resonates with Ren’s music. It’s easy to love Ren and his team mates for their dedication to unique music and videos and their respect and appreciation for their very extended global family. They are a group of creative geniuses.

      @@TimWelchVocalStudioyou’re so welcome. You have a wonderful channel. I hope it takes flight. ❤
      I appreciate attention to detail. Aren’t we all so fortunate to be a part of supporting his music and watching Ren rise? I’m so grateful his health is improving. It’s a lifelong challenge, but Ren isn’t a newbie. It’s crazy how much we all celebrate seeing him playing around with his friends and eating. I’m a grandma renegade. I definitely enjoy his posts when he’s eating😆. Being on limited foods is tough. He’s sorting it out. It takes years to claw back to solid foods and he’s aced that.
      I love that he feels well enough to enjoy his youth and create. Everyone has had some kind of personal struggle. Many of us know firsthand the hell ride of autoimmune disease and chronic pain, or we know a friend or have a loved one who does. Most of us don’t talk about chronic illness outside of our immediate circle, or on social media because we are typically out of the workforce after the first decade and end up isolated. Partners hear it so often they can tune out just to try and get a break. They want to help and can’t cure their loved ones, so they struggle with burn out too. Superficial people drift away and other people just need to get on with their lives.
      Ren is an inspiration to many to keep going. He’s a phoenix rising into a beautiful chapter that he has fought so hard for and he is now able to enjoy. It’s a joy that he is realizing his dreams and we are here in the moment to witness it. He is gracious to let us all tag along for the journey. He has remained humble, grateful snd upbeat. It’s no easy task. There is no cure for autoimmune disease you just have to roll with it. Everyone and every case is different and requires different approaches. My doc believes that about Lyme disease too. I wonder if one sets you up to be hit harder by the other…that’s an unknowable question …. We just call it Lyme whack a mole. If I get too stressed, I get too sick to function. Is it the Lyme or is it the autoimmune gods? It’s just a daily dance of trying to keep moving, stay healthy and balanced and hope for medical breakthroughs to happen. It’s been a very long wait. For me, and the people I know it’s just doing what we can do and squeezing something positive out of the day. Music that makes you sing, rap, or move is sneaky physical therapy. Breathing properly, or just trying to!, is so good for your stress. Belt it out in the shower, the car or whenever the music moves through you and you’ll feel better friends.I’ve been loosing my voice lately. Breathing to sing creates relaxation and releases endorphins.
      You already know all of that better than anyone! “Voice coach” all this information is in your job title. 😂 sorry, not sorry.
      I’m yammering on about singing in hopes that some other person will suck in a breath to sing and discover they’ve been sipping air. Come on survivors! You can breathe deeper and feel better 💪🏼🤩.
      You know the joy music brings, which is why You do what You do!! Keep sharing your knowledge with your students. Life is good. Kindness is free. ☮️

    Me me me I know what the choir is saying! It's a story about a dance where the best dancer leads from the top of the line. A wild boy comes into town and instead of going to the middle he goes to the top of the line and spoils the top girl's feet & hair. Bit of implication that he does more than that to her (he spoils her flower & "puddles her flippers"?)
