You get to collect the games, you own them. So if something were to happen to your account you would still have your games. You can let your siblings or friends borrow them. You can also sell, rent them etc.
The only way this will change is if gamers pressure governments (especially in the EU) to mandate game preservation much in the same way UK law requires all publishers to deposit their books into public deposit libraries.
I was watching this video after I was playing Star Ocean Blue Sphere on my GBA SP using a physical dump of the English patch that I paid $25 for. People are willing to pay if there are reissues/physical versions. As Gabe Newell says "Piracy isn't a price problem, it's a service problem."
Physical and Digital need to coexist. Simple as that. I go digital for some titles for the sake of convenience especially for titles I usually only play in small doses like rhythm games and even some action games/RPGs. I wanted a physical version of Xenoblade 3 on Nintendo Switch but opted for digital since I didn't wanna wait. I also have a digital version of Fire Emblem: Three Houses since I had that voucher 2 for 1 deal where i can get two retail games for only $100 and used one of them for that game. I'm also borrowing my friends PSN to play FFXVI since I didn't wanna buy it full price. Physical deals are definitely great as when hunting for a copy of Pikmin 4 I found FE Warriors: Three Hopes for $28 which is an insane deal for that game. It's bad for the companies but it's great for us. At this point you can get the Kiryu saga for a nickle whether physical or digital.
Excellent video, as always, but one thing that you forgot to mention is, when you buy a digital copy of a game, you're not buying the game itself, but rather a license to play that game, technically, you don't own the game yourself, the danger to this, is that the publishers of that game are in the right legally to remove access to the game you bought with your own money, we've been seeing stuff like this with Ubisoft deleting your entire Uplay account if you haven't logged on it for a long time, meaning that Ubisoft is removing complete access to the games you bought yourself. That's why physical media is really important to have, because when you have a physical copy, it's yours, and no publisher can remove that from you.
I was relieved that LAD Gaiden has a physical release for R3 SE Asia and it has English support. This was what I'd heard first until someone said physical was now JP only. Was constrained to buy digital because I thought it was the only way to play Gaiden in English. I'll buy the physical game too, once my budget permits. It still feels wonderful to hold an actual game in our hands.
@@hex1233 It's confirmed. SE Asia R3 physical will have English support. Thankfully it's not as pricey since converted to USD from my country's (PH) currency, it's around US$ 35. But it won't likely have the DLC. DLC will prolly sell separately at $15. I don't really mind since I saves up to see Joryu. Any fan of Kiryu would be so happy for Gaiden :)

Until top tier internet is available for every person in the world, digital gaming will not be the future. I’m only doing Digital now is because I have a PS5 digital. As someone who had atrocious internet during the peak gaming era, I didn’t get top tier internet until three years ago.

I personally run into games I'd like to play, that have been delisted due to licensing problems all the time and often physical copies are the only way I can still experience these titles (provided I don't have to sell my kidneys to afford them). A shame that the majority of people don't seem to care...
The "deadline for physical version/working on the game until launch day" thing isn't even an accurate argument to make. Publishers for several years have been all too happy to print an unfinished version of the game on the physical disc and make those who bought it download a day one patch to get the completed game. So there's no deadline to get rid of by removing physical copies, they already got rid of that deadline via patches. Anyone attempting to make this argument as a way to justify getting rid of physical copies is being disingenuous.
Another great video! One idea I think could make a good video is talking about if newcomers should start off with Yakuza 0, or play it as a prequel after playing 1-5. Would love to hear your take on it!
And disc-retail isn't the "be all, end all" either. Some games don't come w/ all the content on disc and you need Day 1 patch or the missing files - so you'd need to back-up patch files and/or game folders in full too somewhere. Right, Halo Infinite on consoles and PC retail-disc versions of MGS5 and Fallout 4? ;) Also many games from PC era on retail disc have DRM, which don't work on modern Windows b/c Microsoft blocked them (i.e. Securom and Safedisc) or drivers don't work on modern Windows at all (Starforce). And who'd want to even play Cyberpunk 2077 version 1.0 here? 2.0 or bust - so you need the patches and you'd need a full retail disc copy of CP 2077 with no updates and no DRM at all on there. Also, the real key is buying stuff on disc is buying Complete Editions on disc when they get that re-release treatment when there's no more patches, no more DLC's, no more expansions, and NO DRM on the disc(s) - but, dev's and pub's need to release those on discs in full too. Also, GOG is great on PC and has DRM-FREE games only there, which is great for older titles as those likely won't get updates so you can cut those installer-files on CD, DVD, BR's, other HDD's, whatever...and you won't have to worry about updates b/c it likely won't get one if it's an ancient game.

Their greed is limitless. It's very possible that, in the future, they will charge extra money to provide physical copies of the game. They already have many excuses like inflation, production costs, transportation cost, taxes etc. By doing that, companies will give incentive to gamers to buy only digital copies (we already have consoles without disc) and if gamers prefer physical copies then it would generate more revenue to companies. In both situations, aaa companies will win.
Console only gamers woke up 💀💀 In my honest opinion physical media in gaming has become extremely redundant since the release of the PS4/Xbox1. the discs have been nothing but install files, just like the PC game discs used to be. After the installation the disc serves 0 purpose other than being DRM.
I think part of the appeal of it in some form is similar to the love of vinyl for big music fans, there's something tactile that you feel somewhat connected to in the experience. But for convenience sake it certainly isn't very purposeful, because as you said, the discs are just a DRM badge nowadays.

You play a video game because you like what you are playing not because you like holding the box or whatever.

I think a physical version of LAD Gaiden will come out. Playasia removed the PS5 version of Atelier Marie, but it was still sold elsewhere.

PS4 blu rays hold up to 50 GB. Ability to lauch game without any patches or updates. ability to sell, trade, borrow.
