Another great video. This stuff should be taught in schools, but the pursuit of grades is killing creativity. The tragedy of factory education. This video really explains how we should all work together. Thanks Jeff! :-)
I was at first skeptical of Jeff's assertions that we all have a unique story to tell. However, after being involved in his FAST writing process for almost 2 years, I have experienced this for myself. The art of brainstorming and ideas sparking other ideas has now become an established writing tool. The more I use this part of my brain, the easier it is to generate more ideas. It is like any muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. In the case of the brain, the more creative it can become. The idea of being in a pool of ideas stimulating more ideas exponentiality is mindboggling in its potential.
Thank you Jeff great talk. I am a social entrepreneur inventor with background in mechanical engineering. I am about to disrupt global economy lifting 5 Billion people from poverty. Please stay tuned. This TedTalk confirmed I am on the right track.
Hella introduction to the writing series, Jeff, though its intentions are so far beyond. "Ideas spark ideas" is a terrific mantra for the positive impact we all can make as individuals and collectively as a society and species. Writing can seem so introverted that we easily forget how our visions interconnect to tell a global story. Incredibly inspirational for human beings everywhere to dream your dreams and co-create the world we want to live in together. Thank you!
Neuroscientists say that most of your mind is actually outside of your brain. Out there, it connects with all the other minds on the planet to some degree. Mind is not limited by time or space, so perhaps you can reach to the limits of the Universe for ideas. If you want to have ideas, you need to always have something at hand you can use to record them as they come to you. I read "Applied Imagination" by Alec Osborn in the 1960's and the main takeaway was having something for notes. Ever since then a small stack of 3x5's has been in my shirt pocket every day with few exceptions.
SteveHovland . Its also fractal in nature. Our neuron is a structure in the brain which is in a structe of body. In th community in the cultue of the ecosystem if th planet of the solar system of the galaxy of the universe. And on and on..
I like the way he talked. So confident but realistic. His talk inspires lots of people I think, especially ones who have difficulties in work or in life
"You have a window on our world no one else will ever have" >>> I love this idea! It makes us all so special, even if many of us don't know it... yet! :) Thank you, Jeff!
Great Stuff! Jeff was my old acting teacher and is an awesome guy. Very trustworthy and he definitely knows his stuff. FAST Screenplay is also fantastic and I'd recommend it to anyone.
The future seems so exciting with this talk! Sometimes we forget that we already are in such a changing world. So we just have to let our ideas out, right?
This helps me with unleashing my inspiration at waking at 4am to write. It is either effective or ineffective connects me to the question of goals for a body of thought. Did it say to me what i was searching to express? Will it express to you the need to continue the idea? Do I wish to be effective at influencing many people? Thankyouthankyou.
This video validated my whole life, I am going to watch this video a lot, I just can not believe that someone will give this talk. Thank you so much, Jeff Bollow.
Anime or netflix (as well as youtube) sports and music available to this day made us think in ways very much different than our ancestors. Our phones make us closer to cyborgs than ever, neuroplastcity and neurogenesis makes our brains think in ways that we never thought possible. So we need yo stop telling ourselves we cant do something as the possibilities are endless in various ways. I hope this makes your brain have an idea it has not had before
Wonderful TED talk. Loved every bit of it. I have seen that there's a lot we can learn about creativity from movie producers. After all, they are visionaries who bring their imagination to life. Also, many scientific inventions were first introduced in science fiction. Loved that we build upon each others' ideas to create more effective ideas. That is how I believe the people in the society become wiser.
Fantastic and thought provoking talk. Thanks for sharing Jeff. The future can seem scary with so much change that is happening and the advancement in technology, but it's definitely going to be an exciting adventure for all of us - we just need to "hop on the train" and let our imaginations run free and share :-)
Thanks Jeff. I really enjoyed this video and am glad that we 'connected' via Marie. I have always thought that a very interesting experiment could be one that could be done over social media that would be similar to your writing exercise. Remember back in grade school when the teacher wrote an opening paragraph or sentence on the board and then asked each student to expand on that idea and write their own story. What if we did that on the internet - start with a paragraph and then get people to share and contribute one paragraph ( I guess like the chain letters of old). What would that story be in the end and how would it change. It of course wouldn't be just one story it would be multiple stories as each share would take it down a different path. I will do my part to share this video with others. Regards, BeeBell
I mean he definitely has a good message he's trying to convey but honestly he's not really saying much at all. For a Ted talk I would expect more insight into the creative process and the methods to enhance our imaginations.
I know I am late to the party but don’t underestimate his advice. We tend to look for complicated ways to do things. But here he gave a simple way to unleash our creativity. I started journaling one week ago. Definitely I am gonna try this advice on top. I am looking for clarity and free flow of ideas. But most importantly, I want to allow myself to set my creativity free and to be able to execute them. This Ted talk gave me a new perspective. I am gonna replay it multiples times until his way of see life gets set in my mind. I loved it.
Are you referring to Aphantasia, or mind blindness? It's a real thing that not many people know about. facebook.com/notes/blake-ross/aphantasia-how-it-feels-to-be-blind-in-your-mind/10156834777480504/
Maybe someday we will be happy with what we already have and need. The constant quest for more and new ways to make money (the driving force behind it all) is why simplicity and nature is at stake. Wasn't life simpler, less stressful and happier in the 80's than it is now? Just saying:)

Can't help thinking that most people talking at those TEDx talks are some variant of Gilderoy Lockhart from Harry Potter. Lots of talk and people enjoying their own voices and the thrill of people listening, using big words and very little actual content. Starting to listening to this video now and hope to be proven wrong. But the word "exponentially" in the title is initially worrying. 5 minutes in, still nothing.. 7 minutes still nothing useful. Ok, I'm not wasting any more of my time with this.
Lukas Strautins Hi Lukas, Jeff isn't actually a charlatan. You should check out some of the free content that he offers and you may change your mind. He's excellent at what he does and has created an amazing system that screenwriters find very helpful. If you don't want to spend money that's okay because he has a lot of content out there that's free. Anyway, do your research. Not every opinion is truth. :)
I appreciate your comment jess, though any screenwriter that's encouraged to subscribe money to any "system" is being taken for a ride. This talk still shows nothing. Writing/brainstorming quickly isn't a new concept, it's 101. Being aware of the future isn't a revelation in thinking, either. His IMDb credits speak for themselves. I did my research. To be a writer one simply needs to do, practice makes perfect.
Teemo Congratulations, you made your own stupidity public. Too bad you can't take ownership of it by having your real name. You should post your comment everywhere on the internet so many can be inspired by your finesse.
I love the keywords in this talk.
“ideas spark ideas”
“exponentially”
“thinking about the thinking”

"Creativity becomes the new currency." Love it! I found Jeff through Indie Film Hustle. Great talk on the power and responsibility of creating.

Makes me think that imagination might possibly be the source or creator of all that we call reality.
Nooooooo...... ;)

Check out the hermetic philosophy and hermeticism. The all is mind.
I agree. I believe imagination is the gateway in which we can fully express our shaping and altering reality.

It is essentially a good talk to understand about the imagination. It also give the glimpse of the future which should be around to show up,
Neuroscientists say that most of your mind is actually outside of your brain. Out there, it connects with all the other minds on the planet to some degree. So, _how_ to Expand Your Imagination ...
Kinda funny how we humans are like neurons. Lots of inputs but only a limited output. I.e. action words gestures
The concept of a square " sparks " the concept of a cube
I'm unable to "imagine" images or sensations, or "immerse myself" into a setting, so a lot of this doesn't really work for me.

"Doubling" isn't exponential.
That was my first thought too. However, a bacteria doubles into 2 bacteria. The growth of a bacterial colony is often described as exponential.
