    Wait, there's a Paranoia video game? Neat! The TTRPG is great.

      My main concern would be that the main threat in Paranoia should never be the Computer, the Commie Mutant Traitors, or even the GM, but it should be from the team mates who are supposed to be on your side.

      Especially if you have an appropriately manic GM.

      @@newflesh666 It does require the right group to make it fun. Good games of Paranoia can be a laugh riot. Bad games are just dreary because everyone buying into the concept and game play style is pretty necessary.

      If anyone's wondering what a session looks like, Matt Coleville and others filmed theirs on the MCDM channel, last month. It's four hours, but the idea is fairly clear by hour one or whatever (the character creation takes a while).

    This makes no sense. What is the objective of the player? Is it to be conforming or treasonous? Is it either? Both? And what rewards do the game give?

    • @SurprisinglyDeep
      @SurprisinglyDeep 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Judging by a lets play video of the first 20 minutes I saw by the youtuber Rimmy, the objective seeks to be to get a promotion from Red to Level yellow (there are
      8 levels within the presumably post-apocalyptic underground cave society "organisation" including the secret Ultraviolet leader caste) so that you're not constantly being accused of Paranoia by Friend computer and can thus relax more somewhat

    You guys don't actually know that this is a pen & paper RPG adaptation, do you?
    Sounds like a pretty mediocre one, unfortunately.

  • @UnbornDecay

    The problem I have with this one review is that you're complaining about mechanics that were integral to the board game. Do I think that you cannot adapt a board game to a video game without it being just like the board game? No, look at Tower of Doom and Shadows Over Mystaria for that. But it seems like complaining about randomization in a board game is a moot point

    • @nickj2561
      @nickj2561 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It wasn't a board game, it was a tabletop RPG (like Call of Cthulhu or D&D), but all of your other points stand. It sounds like this adaptation was meant emulate the tabletop experience (which is a good thing IMO).

    • @Vincer
      @Vincer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I love tabletop rpgs, boardgames, videogames- heck game design in general (taking a course on it right now). And i couldn't disagree more, even tough im a fan of the pnp paranoia rpg.
      Those are different mediums, with different pros, cons and requirements- and theres also the intention. Paranoia here isnt emulating the boardgame (like say the talisman pc games or other boardgame adaptations) because its not putting you with a gm and other players to roleplay- that right away make it a different game. The 1:1 boardgame adaptations work when they can pull off exactly the gameplay (tweaks and ui elements non-withstanding), minus the phisicallity of it. Thats not the case here.
      Heck one of the main appeals of paranoia is the suspicion, emergent humor and all the backstabbing between players. Right of the bat the pc game has none of that.
      And when we talk rpgs theres a huuuge factor in the experience: the gm (and by extent narrative). Its impossible for any designer to ensure the quality of a tabletop session- half or more of its sucess is on the gm and players: a bad game can be amazing with a good group, a incredible game can be a terrible experience bad handled.
      So when they say this game gets boring and repetitive fast, thats akin to a bad gm. The material is good, but they didn't made the best they could with it. Theres also what they included and how many interactions they designed- heck when i try to imagine the best paranoia pc something first person akin to bethesda games with a system for npcs and their reactions come to mind. Lots more to interact and get the fun of the setting, wrecking chaos and seeing how other react, etc. Of course budget got in the way, but theres no lack of top down turn based rpgs that are praised, they missed some mark here- and even with a smaller budget other options could work (for instance We Happy Few is from a small studio and nails the first person interactive world and npcs)

      @@nickj2561 Yea, I meant tabletop, thanks

    • @MatthewCampbell765

      Now I haven't played the Paranoia tabletop game or the video game, but: I'd argue that it might be a case of something working in tabletop that doesn't work in games. For example, to my understanding the appeal of Paranoia the tabletop game is largely getting into chaotic and silly situations with your friends. By contrast, turning it into a single player game that the player is seriously trying to win doesn't translate 1:1, you'd need to modify the game.
      Personally I suspect Space Station 13 is probably Paranoia's spiritual sibling, though I'm not sure.

    • @chalibard3826
      @chalibard3826 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MatthewCampbell765 the "silliness" is misleading, it depend on the gamemaster of course but but when I run tabletop Paranoia it is more Brazil/Kafka silly rather than Tex Avery.
      The chaos comes from the inter-player interactions, each with mutually exclusive personnal objectives, coupled with impossible/meaningless assigments from an openly hostile hierarchy.
      You can absolutely run a game where the players want to win, as long as they remember that they will probably not, and should always loose with style.
