Windmill Palm 🌴 || The Most Expensive Plant I’ve Ever Bought!

  • Today I am so pleased to be planting a Trachycarpus Fortunei, otherwise known as the Windmill Palm.
    The Trachycarpus Fortunei originates from Japan and China. It is a hardy palm which can grow up to 40 feet tall, with a trunk as wide as 1 foot in diameter, and even larger.
    These Windmill Palms have beautiful palm leaves which reach for the sun, and they are hardy to -20 Celsius when fully grown. Mine is much younger but should still be able to handle -8 Celsius which is fine in my US zone 8 equivalent climate.
    The Trachycarpus Fortunei can be male or female, but no-one knows which, until they flower! The flowers on the male are bright yellow, while on the female they are more greener. They also have fruit later in the year.
    In this video, we show you how we plant our new palm, and I’m making sure I do everything right, including using the correct palm fertiliser to look after it properly.

    How lovely bought with some of your leaving gift vouchers and named Cooper. It's fabulous, think that spot with your newly painted water feature and the brightly coloured plant next to it will really lift that corner. I had to laugh when you were adding the fertilizer and Richard adding hand fulls. I thought that is a plants equivalent of two roast dinners! Of course I have no more idea either. I can only grow mine in pots, and overwinter them in my heated greenhouse. I am in the US, in hardiness zone 6a. In my zone people who grow them in the ground make some elaborate heated shelters to keep them happy. Some people have also kept them happy in zone 4a in winter with the heated shelters, BUT, once the palms had gotten too tall, they had to just let the palms get killed by winter temps, sad to see.
    For as North the Uk is, you guys sure do get great weather to plant a wide variety of plants, I mean palms are planted in the UK often, I see videos all the time, also the "tree ferns" too. I know, the jetstream makes it warmer in the Uk than most places that high up North would normally be.

      Hello there Julie!! It does get an awful lot colder as you go up towards the Midlands and especially Scotland, but I’m very near the south and on the east coast too, and so I’m in equivalent of a zone 8, but that’s really the mild winters, we don’t get much hotter than 75 most summers. Happy weekend 😍 oh and I absolutely adore tree ferns, I’ve been thinking about getting one but (a) they’re very expensive and (b) I’d have to do all the protection and wrapping them in the winter and that all sounds like a lot of work! 😍

    I have about 30 windmill palms in my garden and greenhouse in North Georgia US. Even though The UK is closer to the Arctic Circle than North Georgia, you mostly have a better growing zone than we do. We are 7a. Our summers are hotter than yours but our Winters are colder. Most of my windmill palms were grown from seeds I bought on eBay. The seeds were cheap and the palms are slow growers. My tallest windmill palm is about 15 feet tall.

      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow CMack Scott that’s so interesting and most impressive that you’ve grown so many from seed! @@TheEnthusiasticGardener I have lived in Georgia for about 20 years. One day I was looking at the magazine rack while my wife was shopping and spotted the "English Garden" magazine. A garden featured on the cover showed windmill palms covered in snow. I thought no way! That was the beginning of my interest in the windmill palm. Besides the UK having milder Winters than some parts of the Southern US, The ocean temperature in Southern California is colder than the ocean temperature in the Southern beaches of the UK. Windmill palms are successfully grown in southern areas of Alaska and Switzerland!

    Hello again, what is the plant behind you when you’re mixing the soil in the wheel barrow please? Because this is long term tree you might want to think about it’s position so close to the fence and building because of the roots, after a few years you maybe surprised how much root it creates, and you don’t want to risk moving once it’s properly settled
