Uniwide Sales Textile Bargain House Center began in 1975, selling cheap fabrics, aiming for bargain-loving shoppers. It grew big, becoming a department store chain by the 1980s. They expanded with a Warehouse Club offering even lower prices and became a hit, attracting massive crowds and making headlines for causing traffic jams.
In the early 1990s, Uniwide was a sales powerhouse, making billions annually. They went public, getting lots of cash, and seemed set for success. But then, in 1997, the Asian financial crisis hit hard. Uniwide's assets tanked, and its stock value plummeted. By 1999, they were losing money due to low sales.
The government stepped in, but there were disagreements about the help they offered. Legal battles began. Uniwide fought to survive, but it was tough. In 2017, a court declared Uniwide insolvent and ordered its assets sold. The stock exchange removed Uniwide from trading in 2017.
To add to the trouble, there's a dispute about the property where Uniwide built its largest mall. This conflict has tangled up in court for years.
Jimmy Gow, the founder, isn't just after recovering money. He wants justice for what happened to Uniwide. Despite the legal mess, making a comeback seems unlikely for Uniwide.
