Checkov's finest moment.... in temporary command of the Enterprise, he places the safety of the ship above the shuttle. AND....he doesn't hesitate to RAISE THE SHIELDS. lol
Yes, reliving My Father's death in 1997 due to a massive myocardial infarct has always been traumatic for Me too. He still died even though I was right there with medical kits and medications and timely arrival at Emergency Hospital with Cardiology on standby.
That scene always bugged me. "I have the power to psychically make people relive painful moments in their lives so everyone in the room can see them..."
You really gotta give Pavel Chekhov credit, his timing was perfect, just as the Klingon's torpedo was going to strike Enterprise A, she fires warp engines! Wow.
Although this particular movie sucked, I miss these days so much. This is when movies were exciting & fun, like literally edge of your seat fun! I remember you had to see some things in the theaters & they would be packed opening night & weekend. I want to go back to the 90s so freaking bad! We've lost so much as a country & a society since then. In a way I am kinda glad the kids today have no concept of the 90s to mid 2000s, they don't have to literally mourn the real freedom we used have.
I really don't get the hate. This movie got an interesting 'villian', tension, drama and a lot of humor too. It's no masterpiece but far from a bad movie.
"Actually it's my first attempt" is a much more fun line to have as a favourite than "target that explosion and fire". But Takei always wanted to be Captain I guess
I never noticed two sound effects used, perhaps in homage. On the Klingon ship when scanning there's the sound the Martians make in the 1953 "War of the Worlds", and when Sulu begins his approach there is a scanning sound from the Alexei Leonov from the 1984 film "2010: The Year We Make Contact".
I recognized the sound and was going to post something but found you did first. Well done! @@JnEricsonx Im a fan of 2010. If you dont mind me asking who did you meet?
The old War of the Worlds sound effects got reused a lot in later productions, including TOS (the green "skeleton beam" sound was used for the photon torpedoes, for example)
2:17 Sulu Knows what's going to happen. A conversation in a glance. Everyone else just think's ?????? Uhura's expression says what they are all thinking when they work it out.
Scotty saying "He can't be serious" is how well Scotty knew the AUDACIOUS ideas Kirk always concocted to get out of Dodge and get his crew to safety. Why Kirk will always be TOP captain of Starfleet, with Picard Coming in close 2nd. No offense to Picard Fanboys, but Kirk always stock his neck out more times than anyone can remember for his crew than Picard. Yes Picard was a WELL KNOWN strategist for Starfleet, but Kirk had CHARISMA which made him one of the greatest.
Star Trek V is a film with a lot of very good, very well directed scenes that don't really come together into a good story. The campfire scenes, Spock and McCoy "facing their pain", this scene... there's a lot of great scenes in this movie, the actor playing Sybok plays the role well, a lot of great character moments, all the cast look like they're having fun together, plus really beautiful music. It's such a shame because you can see there's a really good movie lost in there somewhere.
In First Contact; Data said almost the same thing when Captain Picard asked how long had he been tempted by the Borg Queen, and it was a short interval 0.68 seconds, and Data said, for an Android, that is an eternity.
I love so much of the dialogue in this movie. There is humor and soul and you can so clearly see that this is a crew that has been together for ages. The plot might lack, but the dialogue is great.
B as in barricade. He can' be serious!! Oh, yeah, he was serious. Good landing if a bit rough, but any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.
The beeping sound just before the bay doors open was also the same sound used during the probe's exploration of Europa right before it got destroyed in the epic film ..2010 The year we make contact.
Strangely enough the on screen elapsed time from Enterprise lowering shields till the shuttle enters the bay was STILL 15 seconds! And add another eternity before she warped out...🙄
Final line for the Klingon Commander, is "He's Good" making this the many times the Klingons have much respect for Kirk and almost always poop themselves when Picard strolls in the same room with any number of his bridge officers.
A particular thought i had recently is that movie felt less like a movie and more like a original star trek episode but i dont think that was shatner original intention but as budget kept rising he had to remove things🤷♂️..
With Next Generation & DS9, you get a better understanding of Klingon culture. It is actually an act of cowardice to attack a defenseless shuttle. There would be no honor to kill Kirk that way. In fact, the Klingon comander would probably get in trouble for robbing brave warriors of the chance to kill Kirk in battle with honor.
He got into trouble for attacking Starfleet personnel, anyway, without authorization from the Empire. The movie made it quite clear that the only reason why he attacked was because he wanted to elevate his social status (since he was on the bottom rung). Kirk happening to be the target was the cherry on top for him.
Shatner kinda got boned on this film. There was a pretty long writer's strike in 1988 which inhibited any script work. There is probably a decent film in this story that would have been discovered if they had time for re-writes. Then Industrial Light and Magic were not available for effects because they were so busy with other tent poles coming out in summer 1989. The effects in this film are just really bad and honestly if ILM did the effects I think I would not have been taken out of the film so much. Shatner really did well directing the characters (especially the three main characters) and the pacing of the film was pretty good.
Under the circumstances I guess Scotty needed to function as Chief Engineer, but I have wondered why he didn't have the conn when he outranked Chekhov in the chain of command. Thoughts, my fellow trekkies?
It puzzles me too. Scott held the rank of captain and Chekov was only a commander. Chekov also leap frogged Sulu and became a commander while Sulu remained a lieutenant. Then Sulu jumped right to captain.
I imagine Kirk left Chekov in command for what you mentioned at first. Scotty was needed to get the ship fully operational. In one of the novels, titled Doctor's orders, Kirk left McCoy in command with Spock still as first officer. The Captain has discretion on who he leaves at the conn depending on the situation at hand.
If he can speak in a coded message to the ship he should have told them to track onto their signal, beam them aboard and have security ready to take Sybok and his "hostages" on the transporter pad. Short of that Kirk shouldn't have tried to help them get onboard the ship. Simply signal that the away mission team had been compromised.
I swear that when i saw a version of this scene Chekov said "Transfer power to the warp drive. Warp speed now!"! I'm pretty sure that was the original line. I think it was for a trailer or a promo on tv. I would love to see an original script to confirm.
A shame the films subtitles were missing here and the captions only get part of the Klingonese. The Klingon Captain Klaa, at the end of the clip is praising Kirk with "Track her course! ...He's good." right at the end.
Half the ship's systems weren't functioning correctly. The ship was barely out of its shakedown cruise at this point. Certainly not battle ready. Edit: Spelling.

When did Chekhov outranked Scotty? In the original series Scotty was an O4 to Chekhov’s O1
My second favorite scene in this movie. McCoy revisiting the memory of his father's death was the strongest moment to me.
Yes, reliving My Father's death in 1997 due to a massive myocardial infarct has always been traumatic for Me too.
He still died even though I was right there with medical kits and medications and timely arrival at Emergency Hospital with Cardiology on standby.
I agree. I tear up every time I hear him say, "to preserve his dignity." Effects me even more now that my father is gone.

Well he did give himself the battlefield commission to Admiral in the preceding movie, so he was just validating that !!!

You're living the dream.
This movie has grown on me as I’ve aged. A lot of good moments here
Yes, it's a film you don't love instantly but it has its charm, doesn't it?
Agreed!
The actors who played the Klingons here were spot on as well. Top notch performances
These are probably the most delightful performances of Klingons we’ll ever see.
When the Klingons are talking around .29 to 34 sec I heard the faint sound of the Martian War Machine from the 1953 War of the Worlds
