Here's why this was the best drum line in DCI history: 1) A very difficult, visionary drum book by BK 2) Executed to absolute, dominating perfection. 3) On drums tuned higher than dogs can hear. 4) With a style that is next to impossible.....but oh so beautiful. MAN DRUMMING
I want to be able to upvote this about 100 times. I keep trying to find a better line, but keep coming back to this one. Kuhn is one of the best writers of all time!
...I had the VHS/PBS finals tapes and we watched them non-stop any chance we got in the band room, (2000-2003)...we loved this Cavalier line so much, and even went to innovative percussion sticks for winter line the following year! Everyone wanted to be in corps back then...drumline, pit, brass, color guard....I look back and smile because I had a small part in inspiring the underclassmen to Corps, that had never heard of DCI
Charlie Poole commented (I believe on the drum tape from semis) that this was the best cavalier drumline he's ever seen. And that old dude had seen some good ones, like 90-92, 95, etc...
So here's something kinda funny... I was thumbing through some PDF's I had and I found some music from this show (third movement, starting with the quad ram/split patterns) so I thought I'd print it out and see if I could get any of that stuff under my hands. As I clicked print, I thought to myself, 'Wow, this is a LOT of notes on these pages." My printer ran out of ink after the first page. Coincidence, ABSOLUTELY. Still amusing though.
@resonantmettle These cats were balls to the wall from the first note. I don't think I've been blown away like I was by them since. Will never forget it.
I marched Kiwanis in 2000 and 2001, did the wgi world once I got to college. I dont think kids these days will understand the balance and blend this line had. 2000 Cavaliers was simply the CLEANEST drumline I have ever heard in my life. From a chops perspective there was some monster cadets lines of that era, but I cant stress how clean this drumline was. It fucked with your ears how much they sounded like 1 drum.
i couldn't possibly agree more. everytime i practice i try to mimick these cats as much as i can. and on what mccakb01 said, i do the exact same thing with my students.

Definitely my personal favorite.
This is one of the best best looking and sounding lines that ever played on a field.

@charoian1 I thought I heard at some point that Cavs took high percussion, but I'm not sure. A CBC tie like EFR mentioned seems likely.
