Buchla/TipTop 266T | Source of Uncertainty

  • People often say 'nothing is certain', but I am not so sure about that. The Buchla 266 is a legend, and TipTop made it affordable. In short, the 266T is a random source that inspired about every randomization module in Eurorack. And for a good reason. The 266T brings your case to life. It adds expression and adventure to modules with lots of CV inputs.
    This video features first patches with the Plaits 1.2 firmware, which is now available on the Mutable Forum. I'll dive into Plaits next week.

    Marbles is one of my “go-to” modules. I love everything about it. I am anxiously waiting for my Source of Uncertainty, and very excited here as it seems to pair well with Marbles. Nice work here as always!

      It pairs like a dream and they're super complementary. There's overlap, of course, but it's small considering what both modules can do. Praise for Emilie to give us something unique and special, and praise for Buchla for pioneering it all. When he made the 265, there was nothing else out there.

    Finally! A use for Marbles!
    Seriously, this is an excellent introduction to the 266t, and one of the many reasons (most of them you) why I am putting together a Buchla/TipTop case. This is next on the list…

    Great demo! I am so thrilled to have added this to my rack. Only Sapel approaches what this inspirational and influential module can do. Don was a visionary and it is a toss up between this and the 259e for his greatest creation.

    Nice demo, thank! I'm using the Frap Tools Sapel, which is also based on the SOU. These type of random modules are also great for adding variation to dynamics, not only v/oct signals, like decay times of an envelope, modulating CV inputs of a lpg or filter freq. Every system needs at least one random module.

    Looking forward to your Plaits update experience. Coincidentally, I've just started putting Plaits to good use, .. wasn't having any luck, initially .. losing patience, & shoveling off the sound generations to something else. Oooo, .. this modular equipment has so many avenues of sound.

    Awesome demo! Randomness is definitely the best thing about modular. I only use software, but the advantage there is using as many random sources as you want. I'll quite often run 16+ channels of sample and hold for example. Another thing I like to do is using random triggers for S&H as well as random values, I have no idea how you could patch that wirh hardware. Anyway, some great sounds out of the real thing here.

    Grest demo. And fantastic music as usual. My hearts of my music box is two Ultra-Random Analogs. They are amazing random modules. I am planning to get the 266t aswell, allthough I think that will go in an all Tiptop/Buchla case. I have a Buchla Music Easel, and always wanted to get more Buchla. But its just to dang expencive. So these reissue/remakes are a god send :)

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I frequently searched for Ultra randoms on the used markets. Shame they're discontinued. As for the 200T series I already made myself an issue with buying two copies of each module so this will never fit in any 6U 104 case. I love my racks a lot, but the 200 series sounds and feels special. I always wanted to own a Buchla, but could/can not afford it. I guess Buchla realized there are a lot of people out there sharing the same love, but don't have the budget. I also feel TipTop does an amazing job building these modules and getting them to dealers. I will definitely make a dedicated case for this set where everything fits.

      @@CinematicLaboratory Well, it took me about two years justifying getting an Easel :D But I havent regrated it once. As for the Tiptop 200 series, every demo I have heard the true Buchla sound comes though. So I have very high hopes for them.
      My second URA was a stroke of luck. Found it on the used marked via facebook, pmed the seller and got it. Minutes after there was a comment from one that just missed it.

    I can't decide between two 245t's or one 245t & one 266t ? Heres some things to consider:
    I have marbles(plenty of randomness),
    I like randomness, but i rather have more tricky melodic sequences.
    I'm confused about these 2 choices.

    5:05 So true, thats what i have been doing with eurorack for the last two years and often felt somewhat disappointed because as interesting as it is ist always ends in a chaotic everything modulates everything noisescape.

    As a procrastinator, the name alone should be an Insta buy for me 🤪 but I’m uncertain- so much HP 🤣

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's big, even bigger than Marbles. But it's intended to end up in a 200T system and when you fit all modules in the series, it neatly fills a 6U 104 HP mantis case and you'll have 2 HP left with no final outputs or FX. HP's always give people headaches ...

    • @lockyp204
      @lockyp204 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CinematicLaboratory That might be good if you’re building a buchla only specific case. Most people aren’t, and are just adding to what they already have.

    Have been thinking of swapping this for the Wogglebug which is too aggressive. However this one is not 12hp 😅, but it adds also noise (which I lack except white).

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always wondered why the MakeNoise lineup lacks a noise source... I guess the 266T is a bit too big on it's own, but pricewise it's intended to build yourself a full 200 series for a bargain.
