Why not placing it at the wall rotating it 90º clockwise so: 1 - The cables come straight down, 2 - The "Dell" logo stays in the right position and 3 - Gravity helps in keeping it in place?

If you would have done some research, you would have noticed that avaliable docking stations are supposed to lie on the desk, and that they do not offer mounting holes to be attached on walls. Docking stations only solve the problem you mentioned, so that all cables go out on the back, you still have to DIY the wall mounting and how you make all cables go into 1 cable tunnel. BTW, IMHO a wall mounted tablet looks ugly, I would hide it on the underside of the table, but that is just me.
@@Flix-f6q the fact that some model comes with an optional docking station, does not mean that model has all the ports on the back. On the contrary, every single Thinkpad I've had usually had ports on left and right, only maybe power port on the back. And if you've got the Thinkpad, it kind of defeats the purpuse of doing this, since they have very good and also slim options for docks, probably other manufacturers too.
@@neptunez3495 we don’t even use docks anymore - we just use monitors with the USB C dock built in. And the price difference between the USB C version and standard version of the monitor is like $30 (monitors in question are 24 inch Dell U series).
Not to criticize the mount, which is awesome by the way, but I haven't seen a laptop with ports on the back for the last 5-6 years, most of them instead have ports both on their left and right, which would require a different mounting system to take advantage of all of them.
For older laptops, it's worth to check eBay for docking stations. These docking stations are made for this purpose and costs about the same thing as the materials (cables!) needed for this project without the glue-in-laptop risks. For newest laptops with USB-C, this is a non-problem as USB-C can be used for all the connectors and charger if you have the right type of hub.
iSonikYT I'm not being helped out by that single USB-C port if I have an external monitor and the HDMI for that is on the opposite side of the laptop. Same goes for the power adapter plug, you can't simultaneously feed power back to the laptop through the USB-C and use it to transfer data back. So yea, that solves nothing at all, it just consolidates the data ports.
Man I have no idea how you come up with these DIYs but you do see things differently. One thing what I like most about your designs is that none of them are sloppy all of them are well thought out .... I mean the aesthetics are on point.
I LOVE YOU. Your video was the first one that gave me the answer to what I always wanted to do, close the lid on my laptop when I'm using my large monitor. Now I don't have to get a docking station. I've asked tons of people, even Dell, who by the way, would have been happy to sell me a $200 docking station. I'm writing this with my laptop closed - I can't believe it was so simple. I AM SOOOOO HAPPY and grateful that you made and shared this video. Now I will look for a soution as to where I can put my laptop now that I can keep the lid closed so that I can neaten up my desk. To stop opening the lid to push the power button, go into the bios and configure it to power on the device when power adapter is connected. This has helped me to use a single power switch to power up my entire desk including the laptop without touching it.
You could make it like a "drawer" to make installing the laptop into the dock a lot easier. Otherwise, it would be really awkward to plug the laptop into the dock having to bend down and plug it in all the time. Having a fake drawer which is really a dock is an awesome idea.
That is the great part about DIY - you can always modify or change what you don't want or can't use. I just realised that my laptop ports are on two sides but I might get a USB type C dock and make an alternative version to this utilizing USB C so they are all in one place. Now I just need to find a USB C Dock that is affordable and has everything I need.
You would likely fry it and that configuration, all laptops also exhaust heat via the keyboard area, especially with the battery so where is you might not fry it you will shorten the battery life if you cover the top of it. That's why docking stations are designed like they are

Nice video. I think if it were me I would have had the cable exit straight down from the doc rather than to the right. I would probably also have embedded the cable into the wall. Or possibly I would have mounted the whole dock on the side if the desk where it is less visible. Also it's important to make sure you don't cover any ventilation holes.
Its amazing all those connectors have been replaced with a single USB-C port. Although I still love the idea of wall mounting a laptop to charge and use it. This video is for the most part still relevant Its a thumbs up from me!

Crazy how much has changed since this video, like easy to use USB-C hubs, allowing one cable going to your laptop to go into a hub that all other cables can use
@@rickeyuson2731 Yes, but table airflow isn't great either. The best performance I've been able to get is with a vertical stand, which serves the same purpose with a $20 stand and gets all of the benefits with none of the hassle.
@Mr Random ...except that it's a waste of time to build and it doesn't look as good and it's only for one spot and it's more expensive than other solutions that are better, don't have to be mounted to a wall, and can (therefore) be transported to a different spot. At least when it's just on your lap it doesn't look stupid and you don't waste any money. DIY Perks used to be a cool channel, but now he just uses extreme amounts of aluminum to make overpriced, unessecary and stupid projects that don't make any sense. Maybe 5% of them are at least worth it, but at what point does it turn from a DIY video about making cheap and easy solutions to problems into building all of your own hardware from scratch? Anyway, it was still a good video.
You can multiply it for the second slot which will just be a frame with a mesh and put a laptop cooler into that slot with an hole in the middle for air and also use long screws so that it stays away from wall and have some good ventilation
Amazing Idea! I rebuilt it with some changes. I built it to slide in my Notebook vertical and put the cables at the bottom. Because of the ports position i had to put the Power supply in the opposite side. Some work but its working as well. Oh an i bent some aluminium stripes around the sides (except the fan) for a sleek look. Took a wile but i love my tidy desk!
Just an Idea: I think one could make a universal dock that works with all laptops. You know those Aluminium rails used for drawers or doors. They could be used around the three sides where the laptop ports may be and the port could be configured such that they can be rolled on these rails and then be clip locked at the desired position. This would be much more difficult to design, But once done, in theory it would work with most laptops.
oh thank very much, sir.. My desk and office do look clutter and kind of messy. sometimes. I have a desktop and 2 laptops and always put the newer laptop in its box and put it away. The older laptop is the one I will need a docking station and. here it is.
Fairly sure most modern laptops have their ports at the sides so this isn't going to work - at least not easily. Mine also has power and HDMI on opposite sides making it even more difficult.
Several ways to deal with that. You can make the dock like in the video and have the plugs free and connect when needed, or you can mount the bottom ones like the the video has on the back, and have the top ones in a detachable mount. (this method gives less cable clutter)
Maybe create a slide in mechanism for the ports on both sides, No it won't be as seamless as a single direction slide in dock for all the ports in the back, but this might be the only other option since most laptop these day's come with ports on both sides. On the bright side you could use the port slide in mechanism as a lock mechanism to keep the laptop in place as well.
Just checked my laptop (which only has side ports) and one side is effectively fron I/O - headphone, microphone, single USB and SD. So I could slide the laptop in, plugging in HDMI, USB and power on the back, and use the rest as front inputs. Though mine only cools sufficiently when open (thanks, lenovo), so...
You could mount it in "landscape" instead of "portrait," leave it open, and have a wall-mounted second monitor. (Or just use the laptop's own monitor and free up extra space on your desk.) Also, if you have to use two sets of ports on opposite sides, you can have one set of ports fixed (as in this video) and have the other set slide in from the other side once that one's in place.
If the laptop he uses is the same I've got then it certainly would get hot. I've got a model with i7 and temps aren't low even in perfect conditions :P which this dock doesn't meet at all
Cooling isn't an issue. He did a cutout for the side vent, and any bottom vents will function the same way they would as when the laptop is on a desk. If cooling becomes an issue, the laptop had a cooling issue to begin with.
U have given me great ideas. I live in a 10 bye 20 cabin totally Off the Grid and space is the main thing that I need and I love the fact that every video I have seen of you doing something it's always hiding the cables nice and straight and out of sight. Just like with all the LEDs strips turning them into different light fixtures. I like the mushroom lights that you did it really gave me an idea to make the amount of solar panels walkway lights from the dollar store. I can put them on the outside of my cabin and it would really look like mushrooms versus lights. I even like what you did with the security cameras from old laptops.
While not in need of an actual dock, I am in need of a smarter way to store my laptop. And I think I now know what to do, given that I also have a lot of spare plywood (my preferred, cheap wood type due to its high strenght).
If I'm correct that laptop has 2gb AMD card which isn't doing that well tbh. I never really used amd so I don't know if it's just that one but the Nvidia on the previous model even with less power doesn't struggle as much.
One other note regarding the HDMI cable; make sure you don't use one with a locking mechanism (specially the cheap ones) as it will be an extra step to remove your computer. I use an Dell E-Port Plus II with 2 Displayport screens and a monitor stand. Saves a lot of space on my desk as well and the docking station is under my desk. A big plus is the serial and parallel port that comes with it. Keep on going with those DIY tutorials, I enjoy them :)
and then buy a pretty expensieve (100€ for a good one) thunderbolt dock, which will overheat in 2 minutes and will have problem if you connect too much usb stuff (on my macbook I can't connect more than 2 devices without getting that stupid "not enough power" notification)
You could always make a variant where you favor one side, if the other side are just USB extensions for example. This video should be basically inspirational, it much depends on whether a docking station would be cumbersome or not in you case. But it sure gets the creative juices flowing :-)
You could tell he is not American, even if you watched this video on mute. Because, he used all hand tools. American TH-camrs will use routers, table saw, jig saw, scroll saw, and two types of sanders to make something bulky and ugly. Oh, and I am American and I do have all those tools, but it is nice to see someone making something with hand tools. Subscribed!
This is why I prefer my MacBook if I wanna use display, I just get one hub stuck underneath the table and plug Ethernet cable, charger, hdmi in one hub and get usb c female to make extension so all I need to do is plug one cable for everything. With his setup you can’t even get Ethernet cable as u need to press the head to take it out, I know it’s unnecessary for most people but Ethernet really useful if you download or upload a lot.

what do you think about adding some cooling fans on the bottom? also, as your laptop would look separated from the wall some LED stripes can be added.

Docking stations have all ports on the back, just buy a notebook that comes with a docking station, look thinkpads or fujitsu or dell models.

Well well well. Was looking for exact thing. I want to use my laptops screen in portrait mode. And here I found it.
I like this! I also use my desk for drawing, so I may adapt this to work under my desk since all my ports are on the side

Although there are many downsides to this, the biggest is probably cooling.
Did you watch the vid? Vents are all unblocked... this is the same as having the laptop on the table

Just cut out a hole in opposite side with power? Unplug before placing/removing from dock?
Several ways to deal with that.
You can make the dock like in the video and have the plugs free and connect when needed, or you can mount the bottom ones like the the video has on the back, and have the top ones in a detachable mount. (this method gives less cable clutter)
Just use a HUB for everything.
Maybe create a slide in mechanism for the ports on both sides, No it won't be as seamless as a single direction slide in dock for all the ports in the back, but this might be the only other option since most laptop these day's come with ports on both sides. On the bright side you could use the port slide in mechanism as a lock mechanism to keep the laptop in place as well.
Turn the laptop then... truly an impossible engineering solution.
This would be something I’d love to do, but cooling would be an issue, along with laptops with (only) side ports.
Just checked my laptop (which only has side ports) and one side is effectively fron I/O - headphone, microphone, single USB and SD. So I could slide the laptop in, plugging in HDMI, USB and power on the back, and use the rest as front inputs.
Though mine only cools sufficiently when open (thanks, lenovo), so...
You could mount it in "landscape" instead of "portrait," leave it open, and have a wall-mounted second monitor. (Or just use the laptop's own monitor and free up extra space on your desk.) Also, if you have to use two sets of ports on opposite sides, you can have one set of ports fixed (as in this video) and have the other set slide in from the other side once that one's in place.
If the laptop he uses is the same I've got then it certainly would get hot. I've got a model with i7 and temps aren't low even in perfect conditions :P which this dock doesn't meet at all
Cooling isn't an issue. He did a cutout for the side vent, and any bottom vents will function the same way they would as when the laptop is on a desk. If cooling becomes an issue, the laptop had a cooling issue to begin with.

U have given me great ideas. I live in a 10 bye 20 cabin totally Off the Grid and space is the main thing that I need and I love the fact that every video I have seen of you doing something it's always hiding the cables nice and straight and out of sight. Just like with all the LEDs strips turning them into different light fixtures. I like the mushroom lights that you did it really gave me an idea to make the amount of solar panels walkway lights from the dollar store. I can put them on the outside of my cabin and it would really look like mushrooms versus lights. I even like what you did with the security cameras from old laptops.
Docking station is nice, but one thing you forgot there is no space for ventilating, the laptop get heated, your ideas are so nice, thank you
Sadly this won't work in any of my laptops that have side mounted i/o connectors and i have to use both sides :/

While not in need of an actual dock, I am in need of a smarter way to store my laptop. And I think I now know what to do, given that I also have a lot of spare plywood (my preferred, cheap wood type due to its high strenght).
Laptops with thunderbolt 3 dongle are the best fit this! I made one for my razer blade stealth and it is working so well!

If I'm correct that laptop has 2gb AMD card which isn't doing that well tbh. I never really used amd so I don't know if it's just that one but the Nvidia on the previous model even with less power doesn't struggle as much.

Please be aware that the miniDP port is a piece of ... on those Dell machines. They break easily without any tension on the port at all.
Noted! Good thing that I've made the dock for it, as I'd expect it to last much longer as they're kept free from any movement/angled plugins.
One other note regarding the HDMI cable; make sure you don't use one with a locking mechanism (specially the cheap ones) as it will be an extra step to remove your computer.
I use an Dell E-Port Plus II with 2 Displayport screens and a monitor stand. Saves a lot of space on my desk as well and the docking station is under my desk. A big plus is the serial and parallel port that comes with it.
Keep on going with those DIY tutorials, I enjoy them :)

my laptop has connectors along both the sides (power, ethernet, 2x USB 3 on the left, HDMI, Thunderbolt 3, 1x USB 3 on the right)
just use a thunderbolt 3 dock if your laptop supports charging over the TB3 port

and then buy a pretty expensieve (100€ for a good one) thunderbolt dock, which will overheat in 2 minutes and will have problem if you connect too much usb stuff (on my macbook I can't connect more than 2 devices without getting that stupid "not enough power" notification)
@@dariocoletto2748 That means you need an externally powered dock. Look for 85W + docks and you won't have that problem.

You can make a sliding mechanism that clips from the left and right thus connecting the jacks, a bit more complex, but could work 100%.
You could always make a variant where you favor one side, if the other side are just USB extensions for example. This video should be basically inspirational, it much depends on whether a docking station would be cumbersome or not in you case. But it sure gets the creative juices flowing :-)

You could tell he is not American, even if you watched this video on mute. Because, he used all hand tools. American TH-camrs will use routers, table saw, jig saw, scroll saw, and two types of sanders to make something bulky and ugly. Oh, and I am American and I do have all those tools, but it is nice to see someone making something with hand tools. Subscribed!

This is why I prefer my MacBook if I wanna use display, I just get one hub stuck underneath the table and plug Ethernet cable, charger, hdmi in one hub and get usb c female to make extension so all I need to do is plug one cable for everything. With his setup you can’t even get Ethernet cable as u need to press the head to take it out, I know it’s unnecessary for most people but Ethernet really useful if you download or upload a lot.
