8:30 This is such fucking magic that only happens in a band rehearsal. Everyone kinda gets set up and fumbles around for a while, then suddenly someone starts in on a riff, and with no announcement or anything, EVERYONE just jumps in and starts going. So cool to see it happen with "Hearts Alive."
I talked to Brann back in 2009 or so after a show in the bay area. He joked about how this kit that he has was done incorrectly- They painted the dots horizontally with the shells of the drums in a straight line, when they were supposed to be diagonal. Either way, awesome Randy Rhodes tribute. Brann is such a cool dude.
He's very good, but he's not even a candidate in my mind. You should check out some Billy Cobham, Max Roach or Tony Williams. I'd also certainly put the likes of Bill Bruford, John Bonham and Jon Theodore ahead of Dailor. He's very good, but also a tad predictable for my tastes. Still, I always enjoy his work. Cracking band. Great bunch of guys.
This is around the first time I saw Mastodon. Saw them several times since then. I think this was the time when their performance was most solid. Seeing a performance with those first three albums was INTENSE. it's true that the later albums are great stuff too but I feel like this era was a peak in tight performances. You could feel the dedication they put in it on stage.
For me as a Follower of Bands Like Led Zeppelin , Van Halen , Pink Floyd , Cream , Deep Purple and all the other great Bands i forgot (Which all where Progressive at a Point) >>>>MASTODON
Fuck, I agree. I saw them play it probably twenty times (I've seen them over 50 times I'd guess), and I'd still like to see it in sets. Still one of my favorite tunes from them.
Bills playing Diamonds in the witch house 8:01. OK for few seconds the one part but still. Pretty sure. He told in a recent interview it was a really old riff.
They were practicing with in ear monitors, which meant that no vocals were coming through any PA speakers at all. Which also meant I couldn't pick up any of the vocals since there were none to pick up. It's a damn shame, but still a fun look into these guys having fun in their rehearsal room, in my opinion.
Can't be long until a new album for these guys, and when they tour I'm gonna see the bastards, I've not had the chance yet, I met brann which was awesome but I've not seen them live yet but I'll be getting tickets as soon as I get the opportunity!
Hahaha it’s so random but Bron has the same exact reaper black light poster I bought as a teen in the early 80s at Spencer’s. Lol haven’t seen that poster in a dog’s age.
Back when I first started going to see them Emerald was always the last song they would play in the set, then later on The Bit by the Melvins was the closer.
Apoligize to ask again. So how is it done? You do a full bend then hit the string again for another 1/2? Its scary to do that i might break a string but such a badass style sound.
What’s this about Mastodon using Orange amps? I know Brent used a Thunderverb for a couple weeks at some point, but no. Late 70s Master series Super Leads, JCM 800’s, The venerable VH4, Friedman’s. What’s this constant crap about Orange being the “Mastodon sound”? Orange’s are dark, loose and fuzzy, Mastodons tone is sharp, tight and mid heavy. Nothing against Orange at all, great amps, great company, it’s just this “Orange is Mastodons sound” stuff is some un-reseached BS I hear constantly and it bugs me.

cool to see them practice in the bro cave just like everyone else

Wow, ive never noticed it!
It’s a legendary kit either way I’d say lol straight line dots look pretty classy imo
that part of hearts alive they played is some of the best Mastodon has EVER written! So FUCKING good!
Ikr hearts alive is truly a masterpiece. Their best song imo
Hearts Alive is their most underrated song. Together with The Czar, their two best songs and among my favorite songs of all time actually.
Again I say, this is why Brann Dailor is the best drummer ever.
He's very good, but he's not even a candidate in my mind. You should check out some Billy Cobham, Max Roach or Tony Williams. Brann has the best hand chops man. Damn.
Gotta love when even the drummer loves Randy to that level

This is like the 3rd time i've watched this and to me it is just as awesome as one of their concerts as far as exictement levels go.
woah literally today 13 years ago. It's so precious to see this rare footage of my favorite band practicing
Mastodon makes me so happy that I’m an Atlantian.
For me as a Follower of Bands Like Led Zeppelin , Van Halen , Pink Floyd , Cream , Deep Purple and all the other great Bands i forgot (Which all where Progressive at a Point) >>>>MASTODON
I filmed this.
Liar !!!!!!! I know who did !!!! 🖕🖕🖕
And we're all so glad you did! Cheers!
It's comforting to know that even brann noodles around while the rest of the band tunes lol
With a little practice I think these kids will be going places...
so cool, I saw them the next day play a show at the 40 Watt in Athens, GA. Now I have the footage of the rehearsal before that show! thanks!
Thin lizzy cover by mastodon, dear god!awesome!
Fuck, I agree. I saw them play it probably twenty times (I've seen them over 50 times I'd guess), and I'd still like to see it in sets. Still one of my favorite tunes from them.
AHA! When they played Neurosis I almost died.
***** Right around the 6:15 mark I think
do you know what they played around 31:30??
I gotta find that song!
Tony Stark
it could be from rammision but i think its something that never made it to a album
Someone answered this already, the song is The Bit by the Melvins, thanks though!
Brent Hinds They played "The Bit" live the first time I saw them. Awesome version. Pretty long time ago now. Hulstfred, Sweden
thanks for sharing. great footage to see for a long-time fan like me. if only they'd play hearts alive at shows nowadays.

Which song?cI haven't heard a lot of Neurosis but, I plan on changing that!
the ending riff to Hand of stone is so fucking killer
thanks for sharing man!! Thin Lizzy´s cover is awesome!!!
they should play hand of stone live more often
Bills playing Diamonds in the witch house 8:01. OK for few seconds the one part but still. Pretty sure. He told in a recent interview it was a really old riff.
I got excited for a second when they started playing Neurosis but then just stopped :(
I really love that simple times..
this is awesome...thank you guys for this...can't wait for once more round the sun
Thin Lizzy at 26:30.
Me gusta
ooh, that wee taste of The Czar at the end! Always leave them wanting more.
Funny how the vocals are nowhere to be heard just like in all metal rehearsal room ever.
They were practicing with in ear monitors, which meant that no vocals were coming through any PA speakers at all. Which also meant I couldn't pick up any of the vocals since there were none to pick up. It's a damn shame, but still a fun look into these guys having fun in their rehearsal room, in my opinion.
yeah listen to their stuff, blood and thunder, oblivion. good stuff
this is badass
Hearts Alive
Can't be long until a new album for these guys, and when they tour I'm gonna see the bastards, I've not had the chance yet, I met brann which was awesome but I've not seen them live yet but I'll be getting tickets as soon as I get the opportunity!
Did u see them
@@posingnobody still no gigs in the UK since I posted this
brann. fucking. dailor.

22:40 Hand of Stone!
Wow, brent is getting that nasty tone out of a silverface twin reverb it looks like? nice.
There is a JCM800 beside it[the bottom on is on and then a spare], I'd assume it's a blend.
Hahaha it’s so random but Bron has the same exact reaper black light poster I bought as a teen in the early 80s at Spencer’s. Lol haven’t seen that poster in a dog’s age.
oh wow i got the same shirt as brann dailor
I'm guessing you're close with the band?
That's awesome, lucky you
Where did you get this!!!!!!
ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY MASTODON
dude. I've seen them in concert three times. I know. Lol.

Emerald at 26:30!!!
Back when I first started going to see them Emerald was always the last song they would play in the set, then later on The Bit by the Melvins was the closer.

Drum fill god
What song is heard in the 27th minute?
Emerald by Thin Lizzy, Mastodon did a cover long ago
What's the song called with that sweet shred section at 11:30??!
Grant Bryson
That song is 'Hearts Alive'.
Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry
6:45 LOST
35:32 thank me later
can anyone tell me what song is being played at 31:30
The Bit. It's originally by The Melvins. There's a studio version of their cover and several live videos.
Trevor Theisen
thanks so much!
You should know that... You're Brent Hinds.
How did Brent make that full bend sound in 11:48?
Ru Dela Cruz thats a rather common technique, stevie ray vaughan and buddy guy do the 1 1/2 bend every other measure
Apoligize to ask again. So how is it done? You do a full bend then hit the string again for another 1/2? Its scary to do that i might break a string but such a badass style sound.
Its a bend like a full tone bend, but you push half a tone further. It's easier with lower gauge strings and higher frets
Thank you so much for the info.
que foda eles tocando lost do neurosis
What is the song that starts at 8:53 ?
Hearts Alive
Wait... is this what jamming with your band is supposed to sound like?? We suck!
Fuck yea. LOST by neurosis
whats at 14:00 i love it!!!!!!
Leprechaun7227 Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry
22:40 What song is this?
Mastodon - hand of stone
You don't know hand of stone???
Johnny B Goode!
Nice little nod to Neurosis! Are you lost???
The BIIIIITTT 30:38
Song? Please
Brann Dailor in your FACE!!!!!!!!!!
mastodon plays neurosis @ 6:15
which song is that? I wanna get to know neurosis and I think this would be a good place to start. I had an eargasm at the bass part.
Lost from Enemy of the Sun
cool thanks!
@@brenthinds8202 Lost
wait they are playing neurosis? thats pretty cool.
haha oh. derp. shouldve known you were sarcastic
Bill looks like a little kid in this! lol
Which song is on 9:00 ?
hearts alive from leviathan, go listen to it right now and have your mind blown!
Tony Stark love Leviathan most of Once More Round the Sun reminds of it
Cant say the same, but diamonds in the witch house is a great song and it has a crack the sky feel to it.
Tony Stark I'd say it has more of a leviathan feel to it. Pretty much the only song on the album that truly harkens back to their older sound though.

I think Brent currently runs 6 Orange cabs on stage and Bill has 2 Orange and 2 Friedmans.
Back in 2001/02/03 they were both using Marshall and Troy was running through an Ampeg.
REALLY!?! :-|
7:43 seem like tool stuff
Drummers who don't dig jazz ain't shit.
I always knew brann was good but damn!
Vicarious by TOOL at 7:43 :)
i didnt hear it.
Really? Its so clear.
It's not Vicarious.
