A Nonya New Year is a Chinese New Year special of Arts Central... A Nonya New Year is a Chinese New Year special of Arts Central's long running series Ways of the Matriarch. A special season of 4 x half hour episodes. Mrs Pearlyn Chew is a stickler of Peranakan tradition. She fights unceasingly for the traditional ways of her culture and it appears to be a losing battle. In this special season, Mrs Chew is at her wit's end with her diminishing and disappearing family members, her constant need for uncomplaining labour to prepare her household for the approaching new year. Then tragedy strikes. Her house burns down. But out of the ashes the Peranakan phoenix rises: it comes in the form of an Aussie journalist.
