- Yueniang concentrates on her bird’s nest business. Paul and his friend, Li, set up a law firm in Malacca. Yueniang knows there is a market for imported cosmetics, perfumes and chocolates. Paul introduces a few foreign merchants to Yueniang, so that she can distribute the said goods in Malaysia. Anqi doesn’t understand why Yueniang refused to accept Chen Xi. Tao explains that in that era, divorce was frown upon. Yueniang collapses and is hospitalised. Tao reveals that Yueniang has terminal stomach cancer, but she declines to be operated on.After Yueniang rejects Chen Xi, Chen Xi’s relationship with Zhenzhu didn’t improve. Zhenzhu gave up hopes and turned her attention to an English military officer. Chen Xi concentrated on his family about Zhenzhu. However, he often tries to find out more about Yuzhu. Libby becomes a secretary for a voluntary group, which takes care of the welfare of women and children. Given her background, the Zhangs dare not refuse to let her visit Yuzhu. Libby discovers that Yuzhu is pregnant. The Huangs are in trouble after Xiujuan absconded with the huge sum of money. Moreover, the Zhangs took back the distribution rights and even threaten to sue them for libel. Jincheng has no choice but to beg Yueniang for help. Yueniang forks out the money. Jincheng hopes to give Tianbao part of the money, so that he can escape, but Tianbao has other plans. Paul proposes to Yueniang on her birthday. Yidao and Tao are happy that Yueniang has found a good husband. 月娘全心全意打理自己的燕窝生意。不久，保罗到马六甲和一个姓李的朋友共同开了一家律师事务所。月娘又与保罗重逢了。那时候，大家都很喜欢用如化妆品、香水、巧克力等洋货。经保罗从中介绍，月娘结识了一些洋商，进了许多洋货，分销到马来亚其他州去，生意越做越大。安淇听到这里，仍想不通月娘既然喜欢陈锡，为何又要拒绝这段感情。阿桃指出在几十年前，离婚是件大事，陈老太太肯定难以接受。安淇始知月娘的苦心。谈话间，月娘忽然昏倒，安淇和阿桃急忙将她送院。阿桃经不起安淇追问，终于说出月娘已经身罹肠癌末期。月娘觉得自己年纪也大了，坚持不愿动手术。尽管这样，她还是积极面对生活。安淇闻之戚然。月娘拒绝陈锡的感情之后，陈锡和珍珠的关系不单没有改善，甚至越来越疏远。珍珠深感绝望，开始放浪形骸，与某英军打得火热。陈锡把精神全寄托在家族事业上，对她不闻不问，反而时时关心玉珠的境况。当时丽贝儿参加了由英国驻新总督夫人倡议成立的自愿团体，当了妇幼福利组织的秘书。陈锡于是请托丽贝儿前往探视玉珠。罗伯张知道丽贝儿工作组织的背景，当然不敢拒绝。丽贝儿发现玉珠已经怀孕，走告月娘。黄家被秀娟骗走一大笔钱后，面对银行和债主摧债，濒临破产的边缘。偏偏在这时候，查理张父子翻脸不认人，不只把马来亚的代理权收回去，还诬赖黄家破坏他们家的商誉，向黄元父子索取巨额赔偿，甚至恫言要告上法庭！桂花自中风后，已经半身不遂，黄元的身体也一天比一天差。黄家能卖的都卖了，能当的也都当了。金成走投无路，最终只好厚着脸皮向已经月娘求助。月娘不念旧恶，把辛苦储蓄的钱和首饰全给了金成。金成原本想把部分的钱交给天宝远走高飞，却被天宝拒绝了。原来天宝已另有打算。保罗趁月娘庆生时，正式向她求婚。月娘欣然答应。一刀和阿桃等为她找到好归宿而欣慰不已。月娘亲自递送请帖给陈老太太和陈锡，一方面也想让陈锡对她死心。陈锡虽感黯然，却大方地祝福他们。陈锡把玉珠的近况告诉月娘。月娘听说玉珠精神失常，震惊不已。罗伯听说陈锡加入烟酒代理权之争，大感不悦。罗伯要求陈锡退出这场竞争，陈锡提出交换条件：’把玉珠交给我，我马上答应你！’罗伯咽不下这口气，含恨而退。罗伯张没有因为玉珠怀了孩子而心软，相反的，他疑心妻子所怀的并非他的亲骨肉，甚至想置玉珠于死地。罗伯张把玉珠匿藏在一间偏僻的小屋里，不给吃喝，企图把她饿死。玉珠饥饿难忍，只好抓老鼠来充饥。陈锡和月娘担忧玉珠的安危，设法打探她的下落。罗伯张知道消息后，认为是铲除陈锡的大好机会。罗伯张布局让陈锡和月娘来到囚禁玉珠的小屋，再将屋门锁紧，企图放火烧死三人。陈锡奋死冲出小屋，把玉珠救出险境。但是月娘却身陷火海……

This is hands down the best Singapore drama. In fact, it’s one of the best dramas of all time. The cast is so good and the storyline is so intriguing. Everyone gave their best performances. My mom likes sister Tao( the crippled maid) . I like Pierre Png. Again, all the actors and actresses are good. Such a wonderful drama.

I felt that joanne peh's acting skills are good, she played an kind and generous and beautiful character in the show than she suffered abuse caused by robert zhang which made her go crazy, she than gave birth to his son but was not able to take care of him as her condition was unstable, so yueniang take care of that baby, joanne peh's acting as yuzhu was good for me as her tragic plight made me cry countless of times

看完後覺得虎頭蛇尾，一些重點人物跟重要事件都沒拍出來，細節也不夠。現在終於可以不用這麼成迷這部劇很開心。

I used to look forward everyday for this show to be aired on TV, watching with my late mum.
After more than 10 years, watching this show is still so heartwarming and touching. It reminded me of the time I had with my late mum. I hope MediaCorp can produce more of such shows again.

除了玉珠的事件以外，最主要的是，月娘不是傳統的女性，不會願意只守在家裡相夫教子，傳宗接代，做個合格的大家族女性。
她獨立自主、有思想，她的另一半必須是能和她並肩的，支持她的，不把她當任何人的附屬品的，而不是關在宅子裡的。
這部劇好棒👍
分析的很好，就像她的nya nya一样，传承到最好的娘惹厨艺和珠绣，但是又不要被传统文化束缚。
可我觉得月娘跟陈曦在一起后，也可以做生意。陈曦会和他一起，帮助他。
小时候和妈妈一起看的，那时候在上海，夏天在电视里放的，看到第一眼就被吸引了，多年以后身在美国，突然有了这样的情绪，翻看看这部剧，仍然是经典值得回味。
玉珠真是太善良了，没有意识的时候还扑向火场救人
这部剧所有演员的演技都炸裂了，好感动
我觉得饰演珍珠和美玉的那两位演技很差，从头到尾就只会瞪大双眼，不然就是一味聒噪
好美的一部电视剧，第一次看就久久不能忘怀，还有主题曲真是绝配啊我的天，十多年后再重温，感慨万千😢

Watched Singapore and China version. Singapore one is still better. Surprised that the China version has a 180° twist at the last episode

Re-watched this in 2020. Perhaps because I am now 12 years older, I get different understanding and feels from watching this drama now. I feel that Yue Niang did not want to live life like a typical nonya who is forever tied to the house and husband, that's why she choose not to accept Chen Xi. Remember she was always going on about not bowing to fate where the men control women, blah blah...? Instead, she married the Lawyer who was accepting and will support her business and independence.
I do feel so heart pain for Chen Xi though. He never got his true love despite going through so much for her and with her.
Why they never explain what happen to Liu Yi Dao?
Robert Zhang died from jumping out of window while Charlie Zhang died from gunshot. tianbao died from gunshot by the police as tianbao trying to kill Chen xi and Chen gong. Then uncle jincheng died from heart attack and died after the Huang family house was seized by the bank . Zenzhu died from car crash with customer into River the body of zhenzhu were never found. Auntie xiu juan left to UK and later died alone.Yueniang her auntie xiu feng and grandparent bought house back. Yuzhu later discharged from mental hospital and return home. Paul have new girlfriend while Libby engagement of South African man liu yi dao became sibling and married a woman and lastly yueniang found Chen xi fall in love and happily married. in according 2020 remake version

So in the end, Yueniang married with Paul the Lawyer? I like that better than if she married with Chen Xi. Yueniang's mom married with Japanese, foreigner. And Yueniang also married with foreigner, British. The same fate of mother and daughter. Paul as western would support any Yueniang's idea than Chen Xi. Even Yueniang got two miscarriages, Paul as husband still with her. If Yueniang married with Chen Xi, the ending will be different, two miscarriages will devastate Yueniang's sweet fate because ortodox chinese family urge daughter in law to bear child especially son.
OMG so true, after all tortures she, her mum, and granny endured from the huang's, marrying into Chen family is just entering the exact same environment in which women value will be reduced to only give birth and kitchen. Yueniang is no doubt very much in love with chen xi, and put high regards to peranakan culture and cooking. However her time of strugling and fending for herself in establishing business has enlightened her that there is more fulfilling and appreciating fate in life. She did well eventually, she embrace her tradition and root, yet in the same time reject the toxic and constraining aspect of the old culture.

I like the drama so much. It's revival of Peranakan culture.
Although, this drama stories could be real happenings then.
My mother was a nyonya, I learned her cooking .. It's so interesting,how important was ' Tng Tok' ( Tok' panjang).. long table banquet.
It was a grant tasting of food then..
I admire ....the plates n cups ..of beautiful designs.
I also have one kamcheng at home. It was left by my late mother. She also gave me a Penerakan slipper. I missed her so much.

little nyonya the more you watch, the more you will cry. and as i grow older, i understood why chen xi and yueniang cannot be together, because yueniang cannot give birth - in those days, you cannot give birth, is GG, and chen xi is the only heir of the chen family. that's why libby gave birth to six kids for chen xi. this is handsdown one of the best mediacorp dramas to date.

16年来 看了最少5 遍加上偶尔会看片段 还是一样很感触。偶尔还是会想问什么月娘不和陈锡一起，可是有点遗憾却为这部剧增添美感。❤
不过我觉得可能陈锡也知道月娘还活着毕竟 娟姨都说月娘很有名，陈锡也可能知道，可是他选择成全月娘的愿望
其实插曲《需要》这首歌已经透露了两个人不能在一起了。歌词说了“爱是一种需要，却不一定要得到“。这和TVB一部很老的电视剧《义不容情》一样，陈百强演唱的主题曲《一生何求》也是透露了剧情的结局，歌词也是说“一生何求 迷惘裡永遠看不透，沒料到我所失的竟已是我的所有”。而且看这部戏的时候很早之前就可以肯定他们没有在一起的。戏里陈凤玲（月娘的孙女）在听月娘讲述自己和陈锡的事，可是他对陈锡这个人一无所知就知道了。如果他们在一起，陈锡就是她的爷爷了嘛。怎么可能还不知道。所以不用看到最后也知道结局。其实这是我不喜欢新加坡版本的小部分。根本没有必要以祖母和孙女叙事的方式来贯穿整部戏，蛮多余的老实说。而且像我说的，剧集很早的时候这个叙述方式就已经透露了结局，加上《需要》这首插曲的歌词，更是可以肯定。以演员来说，欧萱和戚玉武绝对是我比较喜欢的，我是喜欢新加坡的版本多过中国版的。不过中国版去掉了老月娘和孙女叙事这个完全多余和老套的部分是我比较喜欢的。看剧情然后时不时老月娘和孙女出来打断剧情真的很烦。而且叙事中还试图解释月娘为什么会这样做那样做，好像观众看不懂一样，硬是要解释一番完全多余。有时留给观众思考和想象的空间比说白了好。

What I don't like about this drama:
• Many characters stay young like Yueniang when in fact they're way way older than her... people she call uncle, auntie are as young as her? Whatever skin care people used in that era, it couldnt make them stay young forever.
• I still can't believe people that Yueniang's loves die that way... her parents, grandma, uncle Sheng. It's too much
• They don't show deeply about the bad karma The Huangs got. They're so mean.... I want to watch them suffer more and more
But overall, this is still a good drama. I appreciate how they introduce me about Peranakan Culture. I don't know the right detail but it's so fascinating know about this culture 😁
I watched the 2020 version but not this one. Who did yueniang marry in this one? Did she marry chen xi or Paul or no one?
Plus I agree Huang family and that Robert Charlie should have suffered more.

Overall, a very good drama, despite in the last few episodes some cheesy dialogue, unbelievable moment (s). See where the grandmother sees the error of her ways. The acting was ok. Some performances were better than others. I just didn't think anybody stood out in particular. The lead actress did actress did a good job, except when she had some bad dialogue to say.
My favourite character was the street wise lady ie the one who took the money, and then gave it back. It's the storyline that kept me watching.8/10

it's been a years passing by but still i remember one of my closed and like brother friend from china.we worked together and i m still looking for him. last i heard from him is if you left from this job i will go back to china. but i have to leave not because of job but because i can't be able to pay my house rent. after a few days i went back and he said i will talk to achi our boss.that you want to comeback but i refused i said i just want to visit you here. after a week when i visit, i thought his there but unfortunately his gone.i still keep prayed that his okay. i cant forget his being generosity and thoughtfull as one of my closed friend. i guess his in china. ..

我个人发表一下观后感，这部剧确实是一部非常值得一看的好剧，了解一下娘惹峇峇文化，最后月娘嫁给了律师保罗，很遗憾的是没有留下后代，因为流过两次产，还好领养了玉珠的儿子，陈锡没有最终跟月娘走到一起，跟丽贝尔结婚了，生了半打孩子，也算幸福……最后月娘牌位旁的牌位是供的谁啊？

看到玉珠 觉得心疼 有时候会看到一些因果故事 比如说上辈子做了什么坏事 这辈子冤亲债主来讨债什么七七八八的，我虽然不知道故事的真伪性 但是我也好像无法赞同所谓的债主在今生中去害人 还理所应当的论调和做法 好像坏人做坏事理所应当的感觉，也许今生做了坏事的人上辈子是受害者 但是这辈子你又做了什么呢？就可以接二连三得去害人了吗？

I just finished watching all the 34 episodes today - wow, so good! I think one of the most under-rated actors, in my opinion, is the veteran actress playing the role of the ‘powerful’, kind grandmother, madame Chen, as well as the actress playing Lin Guihua, the evil ‘grandmother’. Really well done!

为什么不在一起。因为对玉珠的内疚？为什么Libby没有告诉陈锡她还活着，两个相爱的人不能在一起，这样很伟大？
经历了那么多，我是月娘的话也不会在一起，因为他现在过的很好没有必要硬要在一起了吧。而且我还需要将玉珠的孩子好好带大。
讲道理这部戏陈锡进医院的次数是不是太多了一点。
