Reviewers shouldn't have to begin reviews with "No hate to the author, I don't know them." Like that should be a given! No matter what, love your videos. You have the most calming voice and make great content.
I would love to not have to give preambles like that but fans and authors who look up reviews of their own works take things really personally and get wild. Also thank you ☺️
I hate writers like this, who write "oppressed girl boss gets it done" lead characters, but gives them ZERO agency in their own stories so the broody bad boys have to carry them to the next plot point.
One time I was in Target in the books section and saw this book and its sequel displayed right next to the Witcher books and I was like "Hmm what a coincidence"
Exploring a society where women hold religious power that is still a patriarchy is something that could very well be done and would make an interesting read! (especially considering gender roles don't just give certain people control over others but also subjugates them to narrow ways of expression.) but it requires time and care in deconstructing how misogyny works IRL across various cultures, because it could very easily end up as this book does with its gender + bio essentialism in the fallacy that if those gendered as men and women exist then so will misogyny. but I don't rlly think piper cj was really interested in doing any of that.
I mean in real life that existed. Women could be priestesses and oracles, while a patriarchy exists, ther are real life cultures you could just steal if you do a bit research. Like what if superstitions that are sexist that also allow women ho hold power, but also sexist, so that roles sought ways to express in that roles and have religious power , but also ther are literally a lot real life church vs government conflicts, that she could straight steal. Yes that could be interesting if you actually do explore. And the allmother could be and the roles, be more like the pope, but a pretty just figurehead pope.and thats messy. Also churches and corruption could be interesting as abuse of power part. Where dah ther are dudes in charge of roles and the priestesses, hell have corrupt priestesses collaborate with other corrupt dudes in charge of levers mostly, to.
"Why is there is there rac*sm/yt suprem--y a thing in your fantasy world?" That's a damn good question. A fantasy world could have no barriers whatsoever, and she builds them from the jump.
@ItsCatrissa im kind of on the fence about this argument. on one hand, yeah you could have no barriers, but on the other hand, you could use it as a commentary device. to me, it doesn't matter what the conflict is as long as it tells a good story in the end.
Please don't leave, you're one of my favourite TH-camrs to go to when I need to get grounded from all the other nonsense that happens on this platform. That being said, you need to take time off, I'll happily wait for you to come back. Your mental health comes first.
26:55 I feel like there could have been an interesting conversation/exploration here about how Amaris being treated like this because of her surface-level features is also really objectifying to her and just another example of how everyone loses in systems like this. A real-life example comes to mind in so-called "model minorities" where it doesn't present like other kinds of racism, but it is indeed just a different facet of the same problem. ... Or maybe I'm overthinking it. Either way, I don't think the author put nearly enough thought into this story to ever argue that this was her intention when writing.
Quit this series, but don't quit BookTube! Haha. You're one of few BookTubers I actually watch consistently. There's long form and in depth analysis, super short form and forgettable, and then yours. Your reviews are lightweight and valuable. I feel like your life experiences (because you've shared pieces of your life) give your perspective and analysis a different sort of depth compared to others. It'd be weird to not hear it anymore. Lol. Also, I like your ending song. Ha.
Just doing my food prep 😆 but as I was listening and you said "epilogue" I actually raised my eyebrows in surprise, like what exactly happened in this book? Besides all the ick going on, the anachronisms, and the ripping off, this sounds like it was just the first half of a story, i thought surely it didnt end there. I can only imagine the author was trying to stretch it out for more money.
No but thank you for your chill slow talking style, I had the worst migraine day your style is good to listen to so I can understand and enjoy some entertainment
Amaris feels like a self insert character with a white savior complex. I feel like the author has a lot of internalized misogyny and racism that she needs to work on.
I never read this series, because Reads With Rachel’s videos on it told me everything I needed to know 😂 It’s disappointing, because the title is so beautiful, and it’s wasted on this series.
Exactly! I picked it up at Target because of a vaguely interesting summary and its beautiful title and cover! It's a shame the contents don't live up to them...
For some reason i thought you had already reviewed this book?? All the tiktok romance shlock starts to run together after like five of them is2g. Enjoyed your thoughts anyway tho, commenting to get the algo back up for you 💪✨️ hope the mental health gremlins ease off soon
What do mean you do not remember the memorable character of this book like Half Fae Dude Reaver, Red Head Reaver, Not-Gerald, Originally Ciri, the Brown One, and Sarah J. Mass's Sexy Winged Men? They are timeless and totally originally.
your videos are great to write to because the whole time im thinking there's no way this is as bad as [insert whatever trashfire youre discussing] so i better just keep writing!
I haven't read this one yet, only seen reviews. However, things like chess and specific foods I'm good with. I'm even fine with medical terms as long as they have some type of university and medical schools. All it takes is a line to explain higher education. However, if you're going to racism and heavy use of sexism, you need to have reasons why. In a completely different world without the African Slave trade, why are people behaving like it was a constant thing? Same for the sexism. If the queen is the authority figure with a goddess being the primarily worshiped deity, why would their goddess approve of the mistreatment of their people? I don't need our reality to be in a book to relate to it. What I need is a logical consistency in the book's world. If I'm going to spend more time asking why is something this way, I'm not going to have a good time. I've written a few dragon rider books. It's my favorite genre. In one of the books, the royal family follows the queen's bloodline, not the king's. The king is little more than a figurehead. (Sidenote: She loves her husband and king, but she has all the power and her daughters will get the crown when she dies.) A few people act like this isn't the way is supposed to be and often times they are people of low morality. There are black and brown people but they are just people. After thousands of years, no one cares. It boggles the mind how you can "create" a world and some author's instinct is to go to sexism and racism.
Good to see your videos again🖤Now that I’ve got a stable 9-5 I can get back to reading and my art. Don’t know if you’ll ever see this but have you watched/read Dandadan?
Every time I hear about this book the more I dislike it. Usually when I hear about a book that seems bad, I'm so interested to read it for a laugh, but this one, nope. Everything sounds like I'll get annoyed and not want to touch lol
I made my character a white haired “normal”, her power actually torments her and is part of why she ran from her clan. I am trying to think of a hair color that would go with her actual SELF, but with my plan, the white actually makes a lot of sense. Maybe I’ll have her like, dye it black, and then as the dye comes out with travel, she can feel more like her true self and stuff. It’s kinda like a selkie shape shifter idea and her animal form is white, so like, it’s for a reason, not to be cringe. Edit: I am grateful for the historical relevance, bc I want very much out of my way to make sure HISTORICALLY, my book lined up. So like, they have guns, cards, and horse drawn carriages, but they’re still on the cusp of electric power, so it keeps them in a “darker” element. I’m basing my world off Greek Lifestyle/Way of Life and Chinese Culture, but then make it Medieval-ish. If that makes sense. The other areas are also subtly different, but thank god I made my own religion, bc miss me with messing up my gods and terms to make it sound modern.
The romance in this book was so baaad between Amaris and Nox because Amaris does not even think of Nox at all, not even attempting to track down Nox with her new cool reaver skills and Nox is obsessive with Amaris to an unsettling degree at the expanse of herself and her own relationships (don't think too hard on how the brown one can only think of silver pale one).
How dare you dislike the very first "Bisexual Fantasy" book that depicts the very romantic story between 2 woman that no one has ever done before! The author, her so-called friends, and the certain fans of this book certainly have not started harassment campaigns against a reviewers especially one called Rachel!
Legends and Lattes has pretty much set the bar for integrating a coffee shop in high fantasy, and it's ruined me for these lazy attempts 😂 what is with these plot less romantasy novels? Like. At least the ones with p*rn have, yah know, p*rn? 😂
Yeah, every time I watch a video about this book/series I find myself thinking that there’s nothing wrong with including real world stuff like chess or coffee or whatever in your fantasy, but if it’s gonna play a part it needs to be integrated in a believable way
To be honest, I had no intentions of reading this book, I’m just here to watch/listen to you talk about it. It sounds like this book is for people who “want” to read fantasy but don’t really want to invest in reading fantasy. The story isn’t my kind of story at all. If you are going to have a badass chick then make her badass and make her have agency in her actions and consequences. It’s fine if she has to react to something but this was off putting.
this "people mentioned" thing in the description is like tagging people on twitter you're talking about, it feels like bringing the drama. that being said, there's so much wrong with this book and a big reason why i apparently can't read fantasy older than like 1972.
I don't know who you are. I don't know anything about this book. This video popped up in my feed and its title is causing me a meltdown. I paused the video and I'm just typing this comment to get it out of my system and maybe manage to calm down. I'm not randomly correcting people over its and it's no matter how much it annoys me. But you are clearly a book reviewer and, based on a couple of comments I saw, you're not loving this particular book. My problem is this: why couldn't you write its title correctly in the name of your video? It's not like you were ad libbing. You're talking about a book with a title. Whatever faults the book might have, the title is not, as you wrote, "A Night and It's Moon". I wasted time checking, and the title is, as grammar and logic suggested to me at first glance, "A Night and Its Moon". This thing annoyed me to such an extent I gave it precious minutes of my life. I hope TH-cam never recommends me anything like this ever again. Edited to correct juts for just. Because it's just to do so.
@dontfretreadbooks That makes it okay, right? One typo in a pathetic little comment versus a logical and grammatical error made trying to write the title of a book in the title of a video... But I will look at my comment and hunt down the misspelling.
I'm doing a reading challenge that involves reading the five lowest rated books on my TBR without dnf-ing. It's a special kind of torture. I can't even fathom how you have an entire TH-cam channel centered around reading and critiquing awful books. Kudos, man! That is no easy feat! I understand this premise is catering to many of your current fanbase and subscribers, but I also think it'd be fine if you talked about books, and series, and things you enjoyed more often. Try it and see what happens. Allow the bad book reviews to be a sometimes thing instead of basically your whole channel. I look forward to your videos and I'm sad when your gone for an extended time because I enjoy your content, but I also totally support and understand needing a break or a change. Hang in there ans take care of yourself! 🫶
You're very kind. Thank you for watching. I'm planning to branch out a little more and talk about other things. I haven't had the time/energy to put out more than one video a week. I'm just trying to keep up with myself. I'm trying to plan/write ahead rn. 2025 I'm going to have more of a variety.
@dontfretreadbooks one video a week is plenty! Of course, I love it when the creators I like put out videos more often, but I'll take quality over quantity any day. Looking forward to your new 2025 plan! 💖
If Piper CJ has no haters I'm dead

D please you can’t have me laughing at white people jokes like this at work you’re gonna get me in trouble 🤣🤣
I’m sorry 🤣
audibly went "noooooooo" for you when i saw the thumbnail and title 😭
7:50 LOTR has Gandalf the White, and now TNAIM has Amaris the Honky 😂

You’re welcome 🥛🦗
"Go outside...call your dad, idk" LMAO I CHOKED ON AIR
Whenever my sister sees this book at the store she sends me a picture and goes “ah you’re favorite author🤡” because she knows my deep hatred 🤣
Piper CJ you will never be Andrzej Sapkowski

Yeah it’s getting a little monotonous. Thank you for watching and engaging ☮️💜

I barely remember the main characters names 🤣
Oh no....if she's writing a middle grade, I might have to read it just to see if it's any good 😬
