    omg seriously, you reminded me of my grandparents, I could understand everytime they talk but could never speak the language. They’re still healthy tho, but haven’t seen them for a long time bc I’m studying abroad.
    kindda miss them :’(

      @@inmimisbowl this sounds like Cantonese Hakka not my Hakka from where I come from, that is the old ancient gypsy Hakka which we speak although there are similarities. By the way, do you speak German too? I do, Dutch is just a mix of English and German which I can understand pretty much as much as the swiss.

      @@kevinhization No I can't speak German, only Dutch. My variant of Hakka is definitely highly influenced by Cantonese, because my parents are from GuangDong.

      @@inmimisbowl That's alright, only exposure is what got me familiar with the languages. I guess different countries have different ways of speaking Hakka as well.

    Many Hakkas in Singapore and Malaysia can't speak Hakka (Khek) anymore. Their parents generation switched their mother tongue to Mandarin. Malay/Indonesian often called Chinese girls as Ah Moi. It was a Hakka word for girl.

    Love these blogs ! I spoke Hakka at home with my parents and grandparents, but haven’t done so in a long time and felt that I lost touch with my roots. I’m born and raised in America, so English dominated. Nobody speaks Hakka where I live, so I cannot practice it. But through watching your videos, I feel like I learning Hakka faster with the English subtitles. :) thank you! Looking forward to future videos !

    I haven't heard Hakka in so long!!! My father never taught me (he passed away 8 years ago). My dad stopped talking in Hakka since I was five as he thought not enough people spoke it (live in Canada). Please have more Hakka lessons!

    What a great video. This is helping me to understand my grandparents' language. My A-Po describes crunchy stuff as "nam nam dok dok"

      @@inmimisbowl say it to old people and see if they get it, haha! May be a regional phrase. My A-Po & A-Gong moved from Huiyang to Jamaica around 1955. Then to Canada in 1974.

    I hope I can speak Hakka better this year. I'm learning from your channel. You are charming and have better life quality than other Hakka people here where I'm living. Many of us are rich but forgot the culture. Some of us like me, we are not rich and never learn about our culture. It's deep painful in my heart. However, I have other minoritis' blood, I'll learn all about my ancestors' cultures. Thank you for your video and channel!!!

    Liang moi …you speak Hakka so fluently ... I saw your reply in Chinese language too, that’s real cool , do you learn mandarin / Chinese language in school in suriname.
    I live in Singapore but grew up in west Malaysia. My grandfather came from Hui zhou 惠州。I can fully understand your “ lively “ hakka and enjoy your videos.

    Hi, I can understand Hakka if not 100% it would be around 60-70% because I'm Cantonese Taishan. That was relatively close to Hakka.
    But I seldom speak Hakka which my location has few Hakka speakers around.

    Hi, you use "maai " and "makai" interchangeably. I grew up listening to my elders using "maai" instead of "makai". Do you use these two words frequently?

      Yes, I use them interchangeably quite often. It's kind of similar like the Spanish or French language, kind of fusing two words together into one hehe

      If you are from Sabah, the hakka there is very very similar to Shenzhen hakka. Shenzhen is city in Guangdong. Alternatively many KL hakka or Malacca area hakka would probably sound like HuiZhou, another city in Guangdong. You can check goggle maps for these cities

      @@clivechin5219 but my grandma is from Huizhou Wuhuaxian but maybe because she was born in Malaysia, so he follow the accent here instead. Actually in Kudat, Sabah there’s another distinct Hakka dialenct- Longchuan, not sure if you heard of it before. Their dialect pretty different

    i find Hakka sounds so funny. Im Hakka but cant speak it. My granny always complains Hakka yin but cannot speak Hakka to her. Thinking back, Im sad that I didnt learn it so I can communicate with her. I dont have that chance now.

    You Hakka sounds very much the same like the mainstream Hakka in West Malaysia, which is based on Fuichiu dialect. 😊
