Thanks for the feedback! I haven’t had an issue with the 1000D shredding clothing, but I really haven’t done any serious mileage with a 1000D backed bag. Having said that, I do prefer the 500D as well as the newer 210D backing. Much easier to put the bag on and take it off. Less friction overall. I really love the GR2 in 500D. Lighter weight and more flexible than the 1000D, with a little more give. Perfect for travel, and that’s what I primarily use the GR2 for.
@@Pack_roam Thank you for your reply. They don't make 500D for GR2 now it seems.... only 1000D with 210D backing and that is just as well. I asked cos a friend is selling his GR1 26L MCB at a good price and while it fits me (I'm 6ft), I'm mulling cos that 1000D backing felt abrasive on the underside of my elbow a number of times, perched on just one strap during the try-out (it's how I usually carry my lightly-packed bags so there's less heat build up on the back here in hot humid Singapore). I was surprised it bothered me each time it touched the underside of my arm. Another friend's 15L white tiger striped bullet in 500D just felt fine - no issues - but it felt considerably thinner in material feel and I think the essence of Goruck-Cordura-use is primarily about its durability in heavy use, attention to detail, beauty, pride of workmanship, and ease of use. They probably nailed it with the 1000D/ 210D HT combo - but I hope the 210D stands up to long term use. Incidentally I tried on a 3rd friend's well-worn 3 year old GR1 26L in full 1000D front and back and was amazed at how "soft", yet tough and pliable it had become from use. Sigh. By which time alot of clothes would have frayed and piled. Many Reddit comments on this challenge. I'm afraid to just buy that lovely 2 year MCB which he hardly used, to fray my beloved clothes in use. Best rgds, Phil
@@Pack_roam I suspect fraying from 1000D backing has got to do with how it sits on a body frame, and how the backpack is worn. I am out for hours on end during travel and don't wish to be ginger about the 1000D backing and strap undersides cutting into my clothes which would upset me. Some owners swear they have never had this issue; others are screaming murder. So I am ambivalent.
As far as bullets in 500D, I’ve got a desert tiger stripe version and that material seems much thinner than the 500D GR2, less rigid. I think it’s partly perception, because the bullet is lighter in color and I can see light through the fabric, but it does feel like lighter weight material. I think your concerns are valid, which is why GORUCK went to the 210D. I’ve never worn a 1000D backed bag with any of my merino clothing for instance, but I would fully expect to see some pilling. It’s definitely abrasive.
I suspect the fraying issue has a lot to do with the type of clothing you’re wearing, right?. I tend to wear a lot of Carhartt and work-wear type clothing, which is going to stand up much better to the 1000D than say Merino, obviously.
Definitely the 40L. I’m 180cm and went with the 40L. Bottom of the bag comes to the small of my back, well above my waist line. Very comfortable to wear and I love having the extra capacity if I need it.

What would you recommend for a person 184cm (6"0')? 34L or 40L?
