  • NAL SARAS development
The development journey of the 19-seater light transport aircraft for India has been full of bumpy rides. NAL Saras, a 14-seater aircraft was perhaps the first attempt to build a commercial carrier which received approval in 1999 by the government. But soon the Russians who were supposed to co-develop the aircraft backed out due to financial challenges. The project almost came to a halt when it was hit by US-imposed sanctions in 1998, after India's nuclear tests in Pokhran. The Saras project was sanctioned on 24 September 1999 with initial schedule of its maiden flight by March 2001. The first Saras (PT1) completed its maiden flight at the HAL airport in Bangalore on 29 May 2004. The project was abandoned in 2016 due to a lack of funds.
    Revival & Improvement SARAS PT1
However, the current government has now revived the project after approving certain modifications to the cockpit and cabin formation. After the project was revived by the present government, NAL has incorporated design modifications and improvements on the SARAS PT 1 model, like 2x1200 shp engines and 104-inch diameter propeller assembles to cater to second segment climb gradient requirements, improved flight control system & avionics, rudder area, main wheel and brakes to cater to 7100 kg AUV, indigenously developed stall warning system, etc.
The revised prototype of SARAS PT1 first flew on 24 January 2018 from HAL Airport for 40 minutes, reaching 8,500 ft (2,600 m) and speed of 269 km/h. The weight of revised or improved SARAS PT1 has been reduced by 0.9 tonnes. Total of 20 test flights are planned for SARAS PT1N, before freezing the production version.
    SARAS MK2
NAL is also engaged development of Saras Mk2, a 19-seater version of the airliner. Government has given clearance and fund requirement to NAL for development of same. NAL has completed basic testing for pre-production standard and aims for certification in 4 years to produce first aircraft in following one-and-a-half-year. The noticeable difference between MK2 & MK1 version is that, SARAS MK2 features a twin-turboprop high wing configuration instead of pusher-propeller configuration used in the SARAS MK1. Another prominent feature of SARAS MK2 is going to be Auto Pilot using AFCS or Automatic Flight Control System and Flight Director Systems.
    SARAS MK2 Development timeline
NAL is in process of procuring the raw material for the development of prototype of SARAS MK2. Recently its 1:1 model was showcased in Wings of India 2022. Its first flight is planned in the year 2024-25 and production from 2026-27 onwards.
    SARAS MK2 Operational Role
“SARAS Mk 2 will be ideal for commuter connectivity under Government of India’s UDAAN Scheme for variety of applications like air taxi, aerial search/survey, executive transport, disaster management, border patrol, coast guard, ambulance and other community services. Its successful development will be one of the game changers in the history of civil aviation in India.

We have depended on DPSUs for 50 years and become the world's biggest importer of weapons and aircraft. Unless we involve Mahindra, Adani, Tata, L&T etc we can forget any success at all. Forget it. Better not to waste money. All this "sanctions" and "lack of funds" only hides the basic incompetence of the DPSUs.

This is why China will always be ahead of India with propeller engine based AWACS and Maritime defence aircrafts.

Aircraft engines consume a lot of energy. If that many batteries are carried on the aircraft, it will not be able to lift anything except the batteries. New tech is to be discovered if we want electric planes or we make some kinda new element lighter than Li which is almost impossible.
