I would have liked to hear more examples how this racist core in ethnology influenced other key elements of enlightenment thought like political and moral philosophy, stances on religion etc.
The imperial era and the enlightenment era roughly coincided for a reason. At the core of political, social and scientific enlightenment were foundational beliefs widely held such as "white man's burden" and "manifest destiny". That enlightenment was a divine blessing on the Anglospere mainly the upper crust of the protestant anglo countries - UK and western Europe and it was their duty to be the leaders of humanity and occupy the leadership positions in this hierarchy.

Interesting study, but the meaning of the results should have been made more clearly in the beginning. Here's what I gathered from it: The origins of philosophical anthropology in Europe lie in 18th century Scottish ethnology, which got its view on human variation from American slave owners. Therefore the slave-owners' bias tainted the philosophy of the enlightenment.
@@charjl96 That the 18th century so-called enlightenment men had their own racist beliefs engendered by the imperialist activities of their own slapped-together "country", itself an imperialist invention of England: Great Britain. Hume was "Scottish", but Scotland no longer existed as an independent nation. It had been swallowed up. England started with Ireland, Wales and Scotland in building their empire.

Better productivity In having an open mind, then having one that can’t process new information. By labeling what one doesn’t like as woke, you are trying to undermine its validity, because it is uncomfortable for you. I understand that & am glad you are self confident, but refusing to be exposed to new information is “burying one’s head” in the sand. Even if you disagree, knowing all the information gives a greater knowledge pool to draw conclusions from & would be wiser than to ignore it. The idea to know your enemy, is advising what I have above. Logically, the more you know, the better off you are.

If you're against such thing, you should especially watch this, it's basically the origin story of it all, of this "race" idea. Give it a shot and think how what these philosophers said correspond to what you criticize today.
In the talk or in what the quoted philosophers said? Because what they said was WTF levels of repugnant, that's for sure. There is no bigotry in pointing out the bigotry.

Fascinating! Thank you very much for sharing this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Terrific lecture. 'We're all Jock Tamson's Bairns'. Terrific review of Hume etc.
Thank you, David!
