Fine guitar playing, muzikman74. First ever time saw Jerry Reed was in "Smokey and the Bandit," assumed just some actor, not knowing was a guitar legend. I learned guitar via Hendrix, Page, Townshend, Howe, Lifeson, Halen, Clapton, Richards and more. Reed and Chet Atkins are beyond simply incredible. And why so great to hear players like Tommy Emmanual.
Loved Smokey and the Bandit as a kid, only when I got older found out he played the majority of the songs for the soundtrack and when I actually seen him play he blew me away, what an amazing guitarist he was, outstanding! His playing was like 18 wheels crushing a gang of scumbags motorcycles in the movie... Far Out😂 From my experience he's pretty much unknown as a guitarist which is such a shame, he's up there with the best of them in my eyes... RIP Jerry.... Legend 👍
Chet and Jerry put something in their blend of guitar playing. That makes the list you named hail in comparison. But also got to remember they are so in tune with eachothers playing that at some point. Its like they are telepathically leading each other..
Phil, Would just like to say thank you for your video's and for posting the one's of Jerry. I think the world of Jerry's pickin' and just want to tell you to keep up the good work! You sound great man!
Really glad I found your channel and love all the Jerry Reed lessons. I think you do a great job playing his tunes and you do a great job helping others figure it out too! My uncle grew up with Jerry on the south side of Atlanta, toured with him for a while, and ended up in Nashville as one of the greatest session thumbpickers, engineers, producers - Chip Young (real name was Jerry Stembridge). Both Jerry and Chip have long since passed on, but recently, as my dad (one of Chip's brothers) passed, I wanted to see if I can pick up and learn some thumbpicking, and what better than some Jerry Reed style pickin? Thanks again for the great channel and tutorials and for helping others find some great music in all these thumbpickin' guys and gals!
Phil if you wrote out the notation for this people like me would stand in line to buy a copy. I could learn it note by note even when you are going slow you go so dang fast!
@FKNA1 Try to find a device to slow it down, that way you can hear all the notes being played. If you're not good with ear music....use tab. Then keep playing each measure over and over and over slowly until you can get it up to speed.
@dent2313 I use Fred Kelly Regular nylon thumbpicks. Sometimes I use the slick pick. I don't like the speed pick...it doesn't have enough "meat" on it to really thump down on the strings.
Dude your awesome! Thanks for your time and patients for showing us this, I'm a blues player for 30 years and this technique is Greek to me lol but you make it sweet and fathomable
Awesome lesson, you're a great player. I'm ashamedly new to Jerry Lee, thanks for this video. Beside the stellar technique, I think what makes this song sound interesting is the "borrowed" A chord, so it's like a dominant A resolving to D and then a dominant G resolving to C, it has a very cool folksy sound to it.
There's a software called VLC media player that runs of Linux, I don't know about Windows or Mac. You can slow the videos down without losing the pitch. Wonderful software
Hey…I use hard tension bass strings and light tension nylons. The 3rd red one is a Labella Flamenco…it’s more accurate intonation wise and more snappy sounding
i found both audacity(open source and free) and windows media player in win7 will both slow down the speed of a song or video without changing the key...
Dude you are fucking amazing and a great teacher too .. now if I could just sit n play with you for 8 hours a day for a few years then maybe I could play some of these licks ... truth is it’s not the speed that’s the issue, it’s Jerry’s insane knowledge of the fretboard and how it ties into his style ... my understanding of chords and scales is way different than his.
Jerry knew his guitar inside out. There was only one Jerry, and every guitar player, got only one thing to do. And that"s, to give respect, and study him hard. .Hear him with,BB King, play the blues, and teaching BB, a thing or two.In the song. In the sack.
Yep, I only heard Jerry scold someone once, it was when he was being entered in the songwriters hall of fame, some one in the room was snickering n he gave them a 15 minute talking to, about IF Their legend offers them a word of advice to take it with respect because THEIR legend wasn’t always a legend he was once “wet behind the ears” like a few of you, and that your LEGEND isn’t always going to be here... you could tell that marine was pissed when he started, he looked at them before starting n said is it my turn to talk now, or maybe you’d like to come n talk for me...
Cool......nifty contraption..........things came a long way with digital......independent pitch & tempo are common plugins for software media players.....& even HTML 5 with the flash player allows you to control the speed/tempo without changing the pitch......right on the settings button.........just in case anybody wasn't aware........Technology is amazing......I clearly remember wearing out vinyl records.........& buying adjustable speed tape players..........but you would still. Have to. Retune and/or play in a different position/key.......we have it so easy now !
anyone seen my lighter fluid and matches? A guy this unbelievably good, and I've never heard of him? Grab the hot dogs and marshmallows honey....we're gonna have a little fire in the back yard.
great phil, thank you.so whats your email address?are you "muzicman74"do you also learn jerry stuff thats not on video.before the net i used to get stuff off with the help of my cassertte player.jery's solo version of "careless love"was one.i fugured it out with 6 string down to d ,but a guitarist who was supposed to know told me it was actually played in c.love to get yout opinion ,cause even knowing the key and tuning is a big start.thanks for your very knind sharing of all this
So as you demystify the magic surrounding these master guitarists, showing how easily you've learned their licks, I'd ask what original music have you composed yourself?
he's probably written a lot of stuff. you see... people who are musicians like to analyze and understand the music of the people who inspire them so they can be better musicians themselves.
Jason Donald Are you Phil's friend and protector? Phil demonstrates a particular smugness on some of his posts, as if he's diminishing Reed by demonstrating that he can do what Jerry did and show you why it wasn't all that complicated. It's easy to see through.
+Marcus Areolae have no idea who Phil is other than watching this one particular video in which I don't notice any smugness at all. all I see us him demonstrating concepts that will help people understand better what Reed is doing. that's what a good guitar teacher does. the only thing mystical or magical about music is inspiration and how it makes you feel. music theory isn't mysterious at all. it only better helps you understand what you're hearing. the average music listener might be scared of it or not understand or not care but it is of great help to the musician who wants to expand their musical pallett.
Hey Marcus. Phil is showing Jerry Reed licks for people who can't figure them out for themselves. Perhaps you'd rather it remain a mystery to you, and let the guys with the good ears and technique quietly keep it to themselves and not share their knowledge, which, I'm sure you'd also have a problem with.

Forgot to mention I'm from the UK, no doubt he's more well known for his music in the US
Chet and Jerry put something in their blend of guitar playing. That makes the list you named hail in comparison. But also got to remember they are so in tune with eachothers playing that at some point. Its like they are telepathically leading each other..
Great lesson, Phil. Thank you for taking the time and caring. I totally appreciate it.
Michael
You can also just press shift and < when watching a youtube video to slow songs down easily, then the left arrow key to rewind. It's a lot easier.
Thanks ouncy.
This helped me learn the intro riff to Muleskinner Blues. Thanks, ouncy. I actually forgot how to do this.
Hahaha, thanks for this. This is a big help.
Did it upon reading your advise.
Daaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnggggggg thanks alot :)
You are brilliant and this is amazing. Someday I'll play like this too. I just love the sound of these licks.
Thanks Phil Hunt, great info and advice !! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights into learning to play well.
Phil,
Would just like to say thank you for your video's and for posting the one's of Jerry.
I think the world of Jerry's pickin' and just want to tell you to keep up the good work!
You sound great man!
excellent, its really helpful that you kept it on the same chords and played through all the inversions. Very cool man, thanks a lot

Makes me appreciate Jerry and Chet's craft even more. Thank you.
Thank you so much for these lessons Phil!
Dude your awesome! Thanks for your time and patients for showing us this, I'm a blues player for 30 years and this technique is Greek to me lol but you make it sweet and fathomable
Really enjoyed your playing do you show any lessons on don’t think twice it’s alright I’ve heard you play it absolutely brilliant
you have an absolutely beautiful tone man :)
outstanding playing
Lovely playing and fascinating accent.
A great little program for slowing down tunes without changing the pitch is "Amazing Slow Downer". It also has a few other cool features.
Wow! Thanks Phil! Very instructive.
Great thing! Thanks for sharing your studies on Jerry's methods
Thank you very much for this valuable lesson on jerry's playing
Can someone tell me the name of song he plays at 0:55
Great breakdown! Really motivating! I'm going to nail this.. one day!
What's the tuning for this piece?
Hey! You're a great teacher! Thank you so much!
This looks like a variation of double stops, whereas the notes used are on adjacent strings. Would that be a fair assessment?
brilliant, can you recommend any resources for an absolute beginner to play this type of music please?
"- And then i'll kinda show ya, sort of exactly"
Thats clear as day right there 😂
Thanks, lots of good advice 👍
Nice sound Phil
The three people who didn't like this must have brain damage
absolutely....
Jason Goodridge yep I love them both
Most likely frustration. Just study Reed lessons..then go play straight rock music and your a god
Are there tabs for this lesson as well ?
Awesome lesson, you're a great player. I'm ashamedly new to Jerry Lee, thanks for this video. Great advice as usual Phil.
Wah... great work, I'm in awe

Thanks Phil a great lesson if only the youtube had been about in the seventies when i bought Chet and Jerrys lps
What kind of thumb pick are you using? I like the Fred Kelly Slick Pick and was wondering if thats what your using.
Hey Phil, great job as always. Very helpful.
On that guitar do you use normal or hard tension strings and why do you use a different 3rd or G string?
Hey…I use hard tension bass strings and light tension nylons. The 3rd red one is a Labella Flamenco…it’s more accurate intonation wise and more snappy sounding
@@muzikman74 Thanks Phil! That Prismastone sounds great too!
Greetings, excellent job !
Can i ask you what guitar model is that ? I love the sound.
Thanks a lot for your time :)
at 8:00 you say that you practice and practice it all the time. Do you figure the song out yourself or do you use tabs?
I love your playing man!
HEY! great lesson! thanks!
@jack34695 You're welcome Michael....anything I can do...to help people figure out the madness of "the Alabama Wildman".
i found both audacity(open source and free) and windows media player in win7 will both slow down the speed of a song or video without changing the key...

I have some Reed tab books that will help you
How sweet sound you got fellow! You´ve got beautiful hands. What kind of guitar is this one?
You’re a great picker! Thanks for the lesson! Also that guitars sound is really nice, what kind is it?

Did Jerry steal that from Mark Knopfler or did mark steal it from Jerry?
"play it SON"
oh, man ...you are so good at playing, it´s digusting ! :-)
I thought Jerry's stuff was hard to play until you start to get into it ! Then like you say a lot of his stuff is easy to play. But still good songs
Damn your damn good man!
This lesson just proved that I really suck ass on the guitar !
And I have been playing for 45 years ! Actually jerking off when I should have learned to play this style !
Ha ha. Its true, when your sick to death of a tune you know youve practiced. You must have a patient wife like myself.
coooooooooooooooooooooooooooool!!!!!
wow
DAMIT >..SON as Jerry would say Nice
