About the test, it's a shame there is not what should be the right forms....only the numbers doen't help to understand our mistakes. But thanks for this lesson.
First off i gotta say thanks a lot for your efforts that you made for us you are the best teacher ever and secondly we want you to make a video about reported speech
Thank you for sending this super grammar video directly into my inbox....I knew it would be excellent so I dropped what I was doing and watched the video immediately, printed the sheets and did the exercises.... absolutely perfect! I've completed the 5th lesson of your "Daily Quick Fix" course as well.... you're keeping me on my toes! ( Ready for the weekend now)
That's interesting that after "wish" the following "would" is possible. When I was at college we were taught that after "wish" there should be only Past Tense. Like "I wish you didn't play the music so loud". English is full of surprises! :) Now I know that this option is possible. Thank you for the video!
Dear GREG !! This lesson is very USEFUL to me ,because I did'nt know a lot of different uses of WOULD (a little dificult...,BUT ,YOU EXPLAIN EXCELENT !!😊) SO....now I'm doing some write examples, and then, I Will watch the CONDICIONALES video , to review that part of your languaje .THANKS A LOT !! ;"BYE FOR NOW ...."😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah we really need to know about reported speech our dear teacher Also we need to know vocabulary we use a lot in UK , and finally we can't thank you enough cuz you're the greatest teacher ever ❤️
Dear Mr. Greg. Hope you are fine. Thanks for your helpful teaching. Really appreciate it. Kindly tell mw about grammar of ( would be doing and should be doing). I do not how to use them where and when and also i do not know this grammar to what tense refers ( future or present or pas). Please help me.
It takes 5 minutes of your time to read this passage below (don't miss it !) all usages of "would" with example and explanation : 1- possible future in past Example: he would make new friends at school. (not a complete sentence and should be completed ) he would make new friends at school, but he doesn't go to school . (comma needed before but) the example above is unreal don't confuse it with "will": he will make new friends at school. (completed sentence , real possibility in future) 2- "would" in report speech: Example : he said, "I will call" Indirect report speech: he said (that) he would call. 3- "would" for repeated past actions or habitual actions in the past: we use "would" to refer to typical habitual past actions and events in the past . this is usually a formal use and it often occurs in stories ( narratives). the less formal way to use "would" in this situation is using the short form of "would" which is " 'd ". It is also known as a alternative to "used to " . In this usage of "would" we can't use it to talk about past state, in other words we can't use "would" with stative verbs such as love, feel , be , know, we must use "used to " . we can always use past simple as an alternative to "used to" or " would" to talk about past habits. The main difference is that the pat simple doesn't emphasize the repeated or continuous nature of the action or situation. The past simple doesn't make it so clear that the action is no longer true. If something happened only once we must use the past simple for example : I went to Egypt in 2014. I would go to Egypt in the past. (repeated action in the past) Note: "used to" + infinitive should not be confused with "be/get used to + ing " would should not be used unless it has already been established that the time frame is in the past, while "used to" does not require this. This example with "used to" at the Beginning sounds natural: I used to watch cartoons every Saturday morning when I was very little. "time frame past". however when used to is replaced with "would" the example above becomes awkward and unnatural, but if the past time frame is established before "would" appears, "would" sounds fine: when I was little I would get up and watch cartoons every Saturday morning. (sounds good) 4- willingness in the past : we usually use the negative form wouldn't in this case : The CD wasn't working so I brought it back to the shop but they wouldn't give me my money back. 5- make requests: it is more polite and indirect form of will : Will you make dinner ? (Direct ) Would you make dinner (indirect) 6- "would" phrases : would you like to + verb ... would you mind + ing would love 7- Being less direct: we often use "would" with verbs such as advice, imagine, recommend ,say, suggest, think, to make what we say less direct for example: I'd say you are about 40. I think it's much further. I'd advise you to keep working on your grammar. 8-Hypothetical situations: it would be great to travel often.(but we don't travel often) 9-"would" for preferences: I'd rather go to home. I'd rather you came another time. (note: the verb "came" is past subjunctive. If you don't know it search about subjunctive mood) We use "would" with wish to talk about things we want people to do or not to do. Example: I wish my dad wouldn't smoke. 10- "would" in conditional sentences: Second conditional example: If I had more money, I would buy that shirt.(unreal present) Third conditional example : If I had had more money, I would have bought that shirt yesterday.(unreal past) Mix conditional example : If I had gone to university, I would be successful now. I would have gone to the concert if I wouldn't have important works to do. 11- "Would" for criticise: She arrived late to class yesterday. Well, she would, she's late for everything.
I would like to learn more about the would words and will word's in the sentence 's I still am not getting it I will be coming back to your lesson's I think your the best teacher I really appreciate you for your lesson's online I think it's impressive
great thanks a lot for effort but when i watch movie sometimes it is difficult to understand would so could u make the video on would with tv series? it will be help for us
Great video! Just one question: is that okay to use "please" with the structure "would you mind+v-ing..."? Doesn't it sound weird? Like, would you please mind....? 🤔
WARNING. The use of "please" in this form is very rude and the hearer might take offence ! For example "would you please stop talking" is VERY RUDE. "please COULD you stop talking" is NOT RUDE. Note that please is the first word and COULD replaces WOULD.
I am a native englishman tought english grammar from 1957 onwards. I use a form of WOULD which references past state not past action. As an example:- "Would that my toolkit included a hammer the house might not need to be condemned." ie "If my toolkit had included... " Comment?
Sir , please suggest us how can we learn English literature. Please suggest some TH-cam channel where we can learn English literature or make some videos about English literature
Some ways of using "would" are logical for a French speaker, because the grammar rule is often similar. (Unhappily, a lot of French people don't speak well their own language ..😢)
Rise & shine . I have a doubt. "He said he would call me tomorrow." Is this sentence correct? How can you use "tomorrow" ? I think the correct reported speech would be " He said he would call me the next day." Would you please explain about it a little bit .
THIS IS COMPLEX. BUT IT IS DEFINED. 1. If the reported speech was " I will call you tomorrow" then the correct version is "He said he would call me THE NEXT DAY". 2. If the reported speech was " I will call you on Friday" then the correct version is "He said he would call me on Friday" . "He said he would call me tomorrow" is only correct if reported on THURSDAY (because "tomorrow" from Thursday would be Friday). This is because, in all cases, RELATIVE DATES ( yesterday, tomorrow, last week, next week etc.) in the report are relative to the date WHEN IT WAS REPORTED not the date WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY SAID.
Hello sir, please clear our doubts . He said he would call me tomorrow. In this sentence there are two clauses subordinate clause and principal clause. The principal clause is in the simple past tense, and in subordinate clause we cannot use "tomorrow" provided that the statement in subordinate clause is not a universal truth or habitual facts or proverb.
